In this solo lecture, Eckhart Tolle explores the nature of thought and emotion, describing them as invisible energy forms that exist at specific vibrational frequencies. He argues that thoughts and emotions are not physical objects that can be located in the brain; rather, they are manifestations of consciousness, which temporarily assumes these forms. Tolle then reinterprets the Buddhist notion of rebirth, suggesting that the question of how many lifetimes are needed for enlightenment misses the point. A true spiritual master would say no further incarnations are required; liberation comes from ceasing to identify with the endless cycle of thought‑ and emotion‑forms that consciousness continuously takes. He characterizes the unconscious human as one who is completely identified with these mental forms, living in a dream‑like script, whereas awakening is achieved by disidentifying from the stream of thoughts and emotions and cultivating present‑moment awareness.

What is thought? Thought is an energy form at a particular vibrational frequency, as is emotion. They are energy formations at a particular frequency. Oh, by the way, as you probably know, scientists— science does not really know what thought is. Nobody really knows what a thought is. There is a certain association between thinking and the neural activity in the brain, neurons firing, brain cells. There is a certain correlation between the two, but what is a thought? What is its nature? Could you identify a thought by cutting open the brain, your brain? Brain surgeon cuts open your throat, could he find a thought? No, he sees the activity of neurons, but what is all the stuff that you carry in your memory banks, so to speak, that does not exist on the level of visibility? You cannot find it by using a microscope or anything. It already exists in the realm of the invisible. All the things that in your— all your million, hundreds of thousands, million memories that you carry that you could access at any moment. How does that live in you? So the thought is a mystery, but we can experience it and we can see that Undoubtedly it is an energy form, as is emotion. Everything is energy. So it is invisible energy form, every thought. Now, what does that mean? What does it actually consist of? It requires consciousness for a thought to be. It requires consciousness. In fact, there is not thought and consciousness. Thought is a form that consciousness takes temporarily. It assumes a form. Emotion is a form that consciousness assumes, like a disguise. It is born into form. That is it. To me, that is the meaning of rebirth, what the Buddhists talk about. They're talking about incarnations. How many incarnations do I need to be fully enlightened, they ask. And if you ask a Buddhist master— I don't know if there are many left— if you ask a Buddhist master, how many incarnations do I need to be fully enlightened? Really, what it means to be fully myself. 'Or to know who or what I am at the deepest level. How many incarnations? Please tell me, how many incarnations do I still need?' And if the Buddhist master is not a true master, he'll probably say, 'Well, I guess you need another 23. 23 lifetimes of further suffering, and then eventually, then you'll be ready.' to be enlightened. You will be, oh, oh, 23, okay, thank you, Master. If it's a real master, then he would say, you don't need any more incarnations. You can stop the continuous unconscious, the unconscious process of continuous incarnations By not identifying with the continuous incarnations of consciousness into one thought form after another. Don't identify with the continuous incarnation. Incarnation means taking form. The continuous incarnations of one thought form of consciousness into one thought form and emotional form after another. And if you're identified with it, that's who or what you think you are. There's nothing beyond that. In other words, you live in a kind of dream. It's a kind of dreamlike existence. The script that is your mind, the conditioning of your mind, is being acted out. It's thinking its thoughts. And so an unconscious human, spiritually speaking, an unconscious human is a human who has zero awareness, zero presence of what's happening in their minds. They are so identified with it that they are in the grip of every thought, every emotion that arises. It becomes them.
