In this AAAA plenary session, Dr. Katalin Karikó delivers a comprehensive illustrated lecture on the 60‑year evolution of messenger RNA (mRNA) from its discovery in 1961 to its emergence as a platform for vaccines and therapeutics, followed by a fireside chat with Seema Kumar. Karikó recounts early milestones (first in‑vitro transcription, liposome delivery, cap discovery), her own career path (lipid work, 2‑5′ oligoadenylates, collaboration with Drew Weissman), the breakthrough that nucleoside‑modified uridine (especially pseudouridine) eliminates innate immune activation while boosting translation, the development of HPLC purification and lipid‑nanoparticle (LNP) formulation, and the rapid translation of this platform into COVID‑19 vaccines and a growing pipeline of clinical applications (VEGF, Cas9, cytokine therapy, bispecific antibodies, etc.). The latter part of the talk shifts to personal reflections on immigration, international collaboration, gender equity in science, and the need for better public communication to build trust in science. The session underscores the iterative, interdisciplinary nature of mRNA research and its promise as a versatile therapeutic platform.
