How do I add more space away from extending the house?

Andy, a builder, walks through adding a garden room to the bottom of your garden. He covers reusing materials like Victorian floorboards and reclaimed bricks, what planning permission you need from your borough, and how six weeks is typical if you hire a company to build it.

So what happens when you run out of space in your house? Well, you can build something at the bottom of your garden. Now, you don't need a garden as big as Andy's, but I'm going to see Andy's and I've got him a cup of tea as well. Right, bought you a cup of tea. There we are.
Hang on, let me try it.
Builders are so unappreciative of tea. So you've created an amazing space here at the bottom of your garden. And not everyone has gardens as big as yours, but you can still do it from quite a small garden, can't you? You can still make a little space.
It doesn't matter what size your garden is, as long as you've got roughly. I mean, this is what, 7, 8 foot by 15, 20 foot? Everything you see, I haven't paid for. Not that I'm a skin flint, but the work I do, we chuck out Victorian floorboards, we throw out pallets. This floor came out of the last job. And the extension that we took down.
And rebuilt now, did it require planning permission?
It didn't. And again, check with your borough, but it's a quick phone call to the planning office or building control and just saying, look, on a single story room that's X by Y, anything that size, even a bit smaller, obviously doesn't take up much more than 8 foot plus the thickness of the wall. So you aren't eating in hundreds of feet into your garden with this massive thing.
Fantastic. So actually, somebody could build something at the bottom of their garden without planning permission or building regs. As long as it fits, obviously, their.
Borough'S specifications, parameters of it, and they.
Could get a builder like yourself to do it, or they could, if they feel talented enough to do it themselves.
I just think, give it a go. I mean, all right, don't get me wrong, you're not going to turn up and put on a underground extension onto someone's multi million pound house in a private estate. But, you know, go online, I'm not trying to push our jobs away here, but you can get the basics, something like this, if you take down three courses of brickwork, because it's rubbish, doesn't matter, it's yours. Clean the bricks up, reuse them, you're not losing money, you're just losing a bit of your time. And as you say, you can use it as an office, you could use it as a man cave, the kids could get whatever you want to do. And you know, this doesn't take. I mean, doing it yourself takes longer. If you've got a company to do it, you're probably going to be talking, know, six weeks.
Yeah. Fantastic. And you could end up with an extension of your property at the bottom of the garden. Thank you for showing me. Enjoy your cup of tea.
Yeah, I'm going to go and get a proper cup.
