A New Year's Resolution Message from Dr. Miller

Dr. Emmett Miller guides you through a meditation on New Year's resolutions. He walks you through witnessing your current patterns, identifying which ones serve your values and which don't, then visualizing a concrete resolution you want to embody. Repeating the visualization imprints the intention into your unconscious mind.

Happy New Year! Hi, this is Dr. Emmett Miller. Let's talk a little bit about New Year's resolutions. It seems to me that very few people make resolutions anymore. People used to make resolutions and really try to stick to them. The way I see it, the world would be a better place if people took more time to be present, to be more aware of their true values, and to bring their lives into congruence with their heart's desire—with their dharma, if you will. So what if you made a resolution to be more present in your life and kicked it off by empowering the metaphor of the New Year? You could, if you wished, take this time when one year is ending and another is beginning as an excellent opportunity to pause. To pause as in the space between the breathing out and the next breathing in. To pause. Step out of the fray for a few moments. Become the witness and pay attention to how you are living your life right now. What are the attitudes and beliefs and assumptions that are guiding or misguiding your life? What behaviors do you see in yourself that are truly helping you reach your goals? Let yourself feel good about them if you can. This will serve as a powerful reinforcement, helping to ensure that these behaviors and the successes that they enable will continue. Into the new year? And can you also, during this pause, let yourself see those beliefs, attitudes, and assumptions that are not helpful to you in carrying out your purpose in life? And what behaviors do you see in yourself that are not helping and might even be thwarting what you care most about? Now, which of these unhelpful patterns would you be willing to let go of? Which would you be willing to let fade away with the old year? Can you imagine just letting them dissolve? To vanish like the mist on a summer's morning? To fall away like the autumn leaves fall from a tree? To be blown away by a passing breeze? Now imagine during this moment's pause that you have let go of those distractions. Now you are free. Right now. Establish a solid connection with your deepest values and with what you are passionate about. In what ways can you be more effective, more intentional in your progress towards what you really care about? What kinds of thoughts or mental images or spiritual practices do you imagine would enhance your life? In the future? What relationships deserve your attention? How would you like to change your style of communication? How would you like to improve the way you use your words? And what actions in your life would be most likely to take you to where you want to go and create the world you want to live in? If you could make a resolution right now that you know that you would carry out, What resolution would you choose to make? And what kind of effect would it have on your life? How important is it in your life to accomplish this? Think about it. And for a moment, imagine that you've made that resolution and carried it out. How does that feel? There, you've done it. You have begun the resolution process, and each time you listen to this clip or simply pause and take a moment to recall this resolution, it becomes more imprinted in your unconscious, and where your unconscious mind goes, you follow.
