Ask Dr. Miller: Do people have a purpose?

Dr. Emmett Miller says suffering comes from wanting things different than they are. He argues that accepting reality and releasing anxiety lets you see everyday miracles. Most religions share the same core: love others, recognize the divine in everyone.

Whenever, ever any culture is together for long enough to develop a class of wise elders, When they get together and they come out with a set of principles: Love thy neighbor as thyself. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The source of all suffering is wanting things to be different from how they are. God is everywhere, is in everyone, is in everything, is one without second. Allow yourself to simply believe Become aware of the divine will and acquiesce. If ye have but the faith of a mustard seed, and on and on and on. Every wise person in every religion, virtually it's the same message. Different religions, different systems take on little twists like, okay, this entity has several arms and is Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma, or there's Jesus Christ and there's the Holy Trinity, or there's Moses, or there's the Buddha who sat under a tree. So each one has its own twist that's not included in the worldview of the others. But where they all overlap is in this one, this one particular area.
That's what interests me. The area of?
The principle I'm talking about, that is, that we don't have to be tense that we don't have to be anxious. Right. That— it's not a constant emergency. Not at all. And there's plenty of time to relax. Yeah. Plenty of time to become aware of exactly what's true. And as you look around, miracles are unfolding all around you like flowers blooming. Right. That's really what's true. And those people who are so-called enlightened are simply people who somehow have gotten to the point that they accept that that's true.
