Breathing Peace Guided Imagery & Talk with Dr. Miller & Tami Briggs: SF International Day of Peace

In this live session recorded for the San Francisco International Day of Peace, Dr. Emmett Miller—pioneer of mind‑body medicine—introduces his philosophy that inner peace is a tangible presence that must be cultivated before it can transform the world. He critiques how media‑driven fear and disinformation create chronic stress, which he identifies as the root cause of many illnesses. Miller then leads a step‑by‑step guided‑imagery meditation, using breath, visual anchors (e.g., focusing on a point, visualizing the word “peace” on the forehead, erasing thoughts on a mental blackboard), body‑scan relaxation, and an “anchor” gesture (squeezing two fingers) to cement the feeling of peace. Throughout, harpist Tammy Briggs provides therapeutic harp music that supports the relaxation process. Miller repeatedly invites participants to download a free audio version of the practice via a QR code or the website drmiller.com/peace. The session concludes with encouragement to radiate the cultivated peace outward, viewing the future as something we create moment‑by‑moment.

Dr. Miller teaches that peace is more than the absence of conflict, it's a tangible presence. So today he's going to guide all of us to experience state of inner peace that we all seek. And joining him is Tammy Briggs, a therapeutic harpist and peace activist. And after receiving her International Harp Therapy Program certification, she founded Musical Reflections and plays the harp at hospital and hospice bedsides for over 20 years. Please join me in welcoming Emmett Miller and Tammy Briggs.
Hello. It's good to be here with all of you. I'm Emmett Miller. A long time ago, back when I was about 11 or 12 years old, I realized something that was very important. I realized that peace was a possibility, and I understood how it could be brought about. And I dedicated my life to trying to find out how to communicate this to other people. I was in the 5th grade in the inner city of New York, so good luck. Anyway, so here I am, my dream come true. I'm getting to address billions of people. And what I would like is to give you an experience. I want to introduce you to a mind tool that can create a deeper peace within you, perhaps deeper than you've ever known. I know that you want peace in the world as much as I do, as much as most people do, and it's up to us, every one of us. We keep waiting for somebody out there to come and save us. That's not how it works, and I think most of us know that. And that peace that we want to create must begin first within. If you want to sing a beautiful harmony with someone, it's a good idea if you know the tune before you begin. Let us welcome Tommy now on the harp. Music is one of the ways of touching this place within us. Mm-hmm. So we are all born with an inner sense of peace, but we are prevented from knowing that because we're distracted by those of us in power who control the media and the social media using disinformation hubs and fake news, lies, threats, false conspiracy theories. They make us feel fear. Anxiety and helplessness, which they use to program us to buy the products that they sell and to vote for the candidates that they want in office. They do that by creating fear and discomfort. And that same stress that they produce within us, I have found to be at the basis of most of the illnesses and diseases that I found in my 50 years of practicing. I was fortunate because back 50 years ago I realized that physicians usually only treat the symptoms of disease, help you get rid of the pain. But most of what we do as physicians is to treat symptoms, but we never go to the source. So I set about looking to find what was the source, and I did. And I found that by studying people around the world looking at teachings from hundreds and thousands of years ago, because that's where people dealt with the source. And that's when I created something I called Mind-Body Medicine, which is basically learning to use the conscious, intelligent mind, the prefrontal cortex of the mind. So the idea is we need to take charge of that part of our mind take charge of the monkey mind, and I want to show you a way to do that. For some of you, you'll get it right away. Some people, you may need to practice. There's a table right over there where there's a QR code. Focus on that, and you can go to a website where you can download a free experience, which is what I'm giving you today, that you can practice with, that you can practice with. And I, I, and, and also the other place you can go is you can go on the web and download it. That's drmiller.com, drmiller.com/peace, and that'll do it for you. So I want to show you what I discovered that took people to the source of their illnesses and created a career for me And most of my teachings have now crept into major schools and people are practicing it all over. I created something called the guided imagery meditation and published the first. They were called audio cassettes that were out there. Now there's 10,000 different people that have copied it and imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so thank you for the flattery. But you've come to the source now, so let's go on with the experience. Become aware of where you are. Become aware of the fact that you're in a safe place. And for a few moments, just allow your body to be seated or resting in a comfortable position. Let your eyes focus on a point in the distance, something that's not moving. A tree, a point on the wall, a window, whatever is in front of you. And let your eyes stay focused on that point for a little while. And as you focus on that point, I want you to simply follow the sound of my voice and become aware of the fact that at this moment in time you're in a safe place. And think to yourself in your mind, at this moment in time There's nowhere I have to go. There's nothing I have to do, and there's no problem I have to solve at this moment. I therefore give myself permission to relax. Now take a deep breath in, and as you let that breath out, feel your body relax and let go. There's nothing that you need to see out there, so you may allow your eyelids to close if they have not already done so. And gently roll your eyes upward behind your closed eyelids and imagine as you look at the back of your forehead that you can see the word peace written on the back of your forehead. And let your eyelids relax all the way to the point they just don't want to open at all. And when you feel that relaxation in your eyelids, gently test them, feel how heavy they feel. And as you do, let that feeling of relaxation flow from your eyelids throughout all the rest of your body. Imagine little ripples of relaxation flowing out from your eyelids into your forehead and your scalp, through all the muscles of your face. Let your upper and lower teeth gently drift apart. No need to clench your teeth. Let the relaxation flow down into your neck and through your shoulders, through your arms, your wrists, and your hands, down into your fingers. And feel what the relaxation feels like as it reaches the tips of your fingers. Then take a deep breath in and draw the relaxation from your fingertips up through your arms into the center of your chest. And as you let that breath out, let it be a feeling of letting go completely. Completely. Good. And anytime any unnecessary thoughts come along, imagine that that thought is just like words written on a blackboard in your mind's eye. Then remember the relaxation in your eyelids, and as you gently test your eyelids, imagine you draw on a wet eraser across your mental blackboard, erasing the unnecessary thought and sending another wave of relaxation flowing throughout your body. Through every cell of your body, through your arms, your wrists, your hands, your fingers, down right out through the soles of your feet. And if any other unnecessary thoughts come along, erase them in the same way. Good. And now just be aware of your breathing. Take a deep breath in, and as you let it out again, releasing, let yourself sink down into that silence, that quiet place before the next breath comes in. And let the air do the breathing for you. And with each breath out, think to yourself the words, "It breathes me." "It breathes me." And feel that little spark of energy. It's a spark of life. Spark of life that starts each new breath in the center of that silence and that peace. Think of it as the spark of life. Think of it like a little light, like a golden flow of light that flows into your body as each breath begins itself, and let it flow through your body. And again, all the way out through your hands and feet and every other part of you, releasing and letting go. Gradually your mind becomes more and more relaxed. There are fewer and fewer thoughts. And those thoughts, when they do come, it's just the monkey mind that thinks you have to worry about something. Shh, shh, it's okay. Quiet. Erase the unnecessary thoughts. And gradually, as more and more spaces between your thoughts, sink into the spaces between your thoughts. And let yourself float as if you're floating on a magic carpet. Float back through time to a very beautiful memory, the most beautiful memory you can think of, the time when you felt the most peace of all, You could have been lying in your grandmother's arms. It could have been seeing your first child be born. It could be on a meditation retreat. Visualize the most peaceful place you can think of and go to that place. And picture it around you. See the shapes, the colors, the movement. Hear the sounds around you. And most of all, feel the sense of peace. Peace within you. Experience that positiveness with all the parts of you. And feel it grow within you. And think of a word that best describes the most beautiful feeling that you have inside. Think that word. Squeeze two fingers together. And let that be an anchor that can bring you back to this feeling. And each time you choose to relax in this way and come back to this special place and feel that feeling, it grows stronger, and your ability to go back to it becomes more and more developed, and you can find peace whenever you wish. And now imagine that, that peace is flowing through your body and it's being exuded from your body. It's radiating from your body. Imagine you breathe out peace with each breath, that with each word you speak, you speak of peace. Imagine that each thing and each person you touch, that peace flows from you into that other person. Picture that. In your mind's eye. Let everything else go for a moment. And remember, the future is not someplace you're going. The future is a place that you are creating, and you are creating it with every thought, with every word, with every action, with every deed. And the more often you find that place of peace inside, The more you're able to feel it in every moment, the more you're able to share it with others and to know that now, just as when you do that peace wave at noon each day, there are thousands, millions of others doing the same thing at this moment, and you are part of that oneness. And allow yourself to speak from that knowledge. This is who you are. Gradually now, take another deep breath, and as you do, allow yourself to float up, floating back on your magic carpet to this place that we call here and now. Feel your body still resting in its place. Hear the sounds around you. Notice how positive you feel inside. And even as you slowly let your eyelids open, Let your focus be soft. Just see the colors. Appreciate the beauty of being able to see the colors, to perceive the movement. And share this love and this closeness with each of the people that you meet today. Try that. Thank you very much.
