Dr. Emmett Miller guides you to visualize pain as an image on a screen, then watch it fade as you relax. The technique uses color, size, and texture to help your mind release the sensation.

Perhaps you can see a very clear image of this part of your body, or perhaps it's just a blurry image. However you see it is okay. You may even picture the letters P-A-I-N on that screen. And as you look at that shape you're projecting on the screen, Notice what color it is, or give it a color that goes along with the sensation. See the color clearly, or pretend you can see it, whatever color seems appropriate to you. See the size and shape of this area. How large does it look? Is it a bright color or a dull color? Are its borders smooth or irregular? Does it look flat or bumpy? Is it the same color throughout or does it vary in color? Picture it out there on that screen, but just imagine that you're picturing it and pretend that you can see it out there. Now, because this image on the screen has no really important information for you, you can gradually let it fade away. Gradually, as you relax and go deeper and deeper within, the color fades, the image fades, becomes more blurry, more diffuse, less concentrated, disappearing. And as this happens, the unwanted sensation will continue to fade along with it. Becoming less and less as you slip gradually into a deep, comfortable state of peace.
