In this short guided imagery audio excerpt, Dr. Emmett Miller leads listeners through a progressive relaxation exercise aimed at alleviating headache, neck, and shoulder tension. The script instructs the listener to count down from five, relax the hand, and gradually form a fist while visualizing the tension in the hand mirroring the discomfort in the head, neck, or shoulders. The listener is guided to imagine the fist squeezing the painful area, then releasing the grip, allowing the tension to drain away like water. The exercise emphasizes the transfer of tension from the head/neck/shoulders to the hand and forearm, promoting overall relaxation. The segment concludes with a brief promotional note directing listeners to Dr. Miller’s full Headache Relief program at shopdrmiller.com.

Then, as I count from 5 down to 0, gradually let your hand relax. And as it does, feel all the tension draining out of that hand. And as it relaxes, imagine that all the tension and discomfort are also draining from that other area, and that any remaining tight spots in your head, neck, or shoulders become just as relaxed as your hand. Slowly, gradually now, beginning to curl your fingers. One, very, very slowly. Feel what's happening in your hand as the tips of your fingers come closer to your palm. Two, gradually, slowly beginning to make a fist and feeling the tension. 3. And as that fist begins to tighten more and more, notice how it begins to look and feel just like that other area, gradually tightening. 4. Feel the discomfort building in your hand, and in your mind's eye, superimpose this fist over the uncomfortable area of your head or neck or shoulders. Imagine that you are actually reaching in and squeezing this area of your body, making it tight and uncomfortable. 5. Feeling that fist really tight. And if you wish, you may take that fist and rest it right on top of the other area. And imagine that all the discomfort is draining out of your head and neck and shoulders, and your head and neck and shoulders are relaxing as that tension and discomfort are absorbed by your hand and your forearm. Good. And now slowly begin to let your fist relax. 5. Slowly, gradually beginning to release your grip. And as you do, also feel the muscles of your neck and shoulders and scalp letting go of even more tension. 4. Feel the tension draining out of your hand and fingers and arm like water draining out of a sink. Or bathtub and feel any tension from your scalp and neck and head relaxing as well.
