The Magic Word by Which All May Be Accomplished – Guided Imagery & Talk [Episode 21]

Dr. Emmett Miller leads a 90-minute guided meditation and talk on a transformative "magic word" that can resolve suffering. He uses the Sufi story of Khidr, myths like Hercules and Antaeus, and Taoist philosophy to show how reframing polarities and reshaping thoughts through meditation and imagination unlock inner wisdom and healing.
The show you're about to hear is a recording from Dr. Miller's webinar series titled Life Meditations. He began this series in response to the pandemic, and his goal has been to provide wisdom, practical tools, and comfort to people during these stressful times. Watch the entire series at drmiller.com/lifemeditations. That's drmiller.com/lifemeditations.
Hello everyone, this is Dr. Emmett Miller, and today we're going to be exploring the magic word by which all might be accomplished. I know I'm sure that you at some times in your life have looked out at the world and said, "I wish there was a magic word by which I could stop all the excess suffering and bring quiet to troubled hearts and peace to warring communities and homes to refugees," or to stop the global warming, or whatever it might be. What if there is such a word? We're going to explore that notion. I think you'll find it quite interesting. If you've looked at my write-up to promote this particular show, I began with a, a story about Khidr. Khidr is a prophet, some thought he was a god of the Sufi tradition. And one day Khidr looked down at Earth and saw how people were suffering, looked down at the land of fools, which is what the Sufis call the world that we live in, the land of fools, and he decided he would come to Earth and share with mankind that word by which all might be accomplished. And he arrived on Earth and was met almost immediately by 3 men. And they said, "Who are you?" They looked and saw this guy dressed in these old-fashioned kaftan that he was wearing, the robes. And he says, "I'm Khidir, and I've come to share with you, with mankind, that word by which all might be accomplished. And those men said, well, you're really in luck because we are the three wisest men of the land of fools, so it's just perfect that you should share that with us first. I'll continue that story in a little while, but let me just kind of finish with my introduction. We come to you every other Thursday. Oh, let me thank you. All for those of you who have seen fit to donate, and a number of you have, and that's been very— I'm very pleased with that. Some of the donations were quite generous, and that was wonderful. And we're probably getting about one-third the number of donations that is needed to finance bringing you the show, not including my time. So do keep it up if you like what we're doing, and maybe what's even more valuable is for you to share share with other people if you like what you're hearing here, if you feel that there's some value in what I'm presenting. And what I'm saying, I think, will have its most effect if it touches many, many people. It's nice to have a nice comfy small group, but, you know, we need to move thousands of hearts to bring about some of the changes, maybe millions. So share with people that you know. If people come to my website, drmiller.com, drmiller.com, and sign up for the newsletter, they'll get a few gifts including my book, Our Culture on the Couch, in which I predicted the disasters that we're seeing in the world around us. That was— and even though it was written 10 years ago, it's still very appropriate and It's free, so where can you go wrong? And several other gifts, plus you'll get information about how to log on and participate. So send that to let people know. I'd really appreciate that. I guess I would like to introduce one thing. I keep forgetting to do these things, but I have a new product that I think is, uh, is one that could be useful for for many of us, and it is called Releasing Shame and Embracing Self-Worth. And these are guided meditations and affirmations, and I think you'll find that has something for all of us to be able to gain more confidence in who we are and to Reaffirm the power that we do have. I talk a lot about the learned helplessness that has been induced in us, in the world all around us, and our need to emerge from that. And this product is one you'll find is very useful for that, this sort of everyday shame we all have, and especially for those people for whom there's a real toxic level of shame. Where they're not able to do what they need to do or be confident or be successful in their lives. So I'd like to begin with a little bit of relaxation. To begin by finding a comfortable place you can be. Sit or lie down. And take your awareness inside. And as usual, you can either begin by choosing a point out in the distance to focus your eyes on, or else allow your eyes to close. Let them roll up gently behind your closed eyelids. As though you're looking upward toward the back of your forehead. Amazingly, what this allows us to do is to begin to access the functioning of the prefrontal cortex, which is the highest level of the mind— functions in that area. And if your eyes are open, you notice the only point you can see clearly is the one you're looking at. Everything else fades out into kind of a blur. Let that happen. Because you don't need to be looking around right now. Become aware of the fact that at this moment in time, there's no other place that you need to go, there's nothing else that you need to do, and there's no problem that you have to solve. And therefore, you can give yourself permission to relax. Soon you notice you slip into sort of a daydreamy state of mind where your eyes are open but you're really not looking at the thing your eyes are looking at. Let that happen. And that means your awareness is going from the outside to the inside. And then you find your eyelids become heavy, or your eyes may begin to sting or feel dry or even water. Notice how your eyes give you signals that they would prefer to be closed, because what's really important right now is what's inside. Allow your eyelids to close. Let them relax all the way down to the point they feel like they just don't want to open at all. So relaxed, so comfortable. And when you feel that feeling of relaxation, gently test them. Notice how they resist being opened, and that's a good thing. And as you gently test your eyelids, let that relaxation that you feel in your eyelids flow throughout the rest of your body. Ripples of relaxation flowing through your forehead and your scalp, through your face. Jaw muscles relax and your upper and lower teeth gently drift apart. As you're relaxing, just notice each part of your body as it lets go. Relaxing the muscles of your neck and your shoulders. Just kind of let them sag. They don't have to carry anything. Let the relaxation flow down through your arms. Through your forearms and your wrists and your hands, all the way down to the tips of your fingers. And as they reach the tips of your fingers, let that feeling of relaxation flow up, back up through your arms. As you take a deep breath in, draw it up into the center of your chest. And as you let that breath out, let it be a feeling of letting go, of letting go completely. Let the air do the breathing for you. As each breath enters, let it bring in relaxation. Let each breath out empty your body of stress and tension. Begin to give yourself permission to be present. In this moment. Feel the rising and falling of your abdomen with each breath as all your internal organs relax. Let the relaxation flow down through your pelvis and thighs, knees and legs, your ankles and your feet, all the way down to the very tips of your toes. More and more relaxed. More and more comfortable with each breath. Good. And anytime any unnecessary thoughts come along, notice that your mind has been distracted. And then with your next breath out, breathe the unnecessary thought out through your nose. And then let your next breath in, breathe in fresh clean air filled with relaxation. Let it flow through your mind and let it travel all the way down through your body to the tips of your fingers and the tips of your toes. And by unnecessary thoughts, I mean questions, doubts, concerns, thoughts about the past or the future. The past and the future do not exist. This moment right now is the only moment that exists. Bring yourself into this present moment of now by emptying every unnecessary thought. Put it on a mental blackboard if an unnecessary thought comes along, a memory or an imagination about the future. Gently test your eyelids, and as you do, let that relaxation in your eyelids flow throughout the rest of your body as you draw a wet eraser across your mental blackboard, erasing the unnecessary thought and coming more and more into this moment. As breath follows breath, moment follows moment. In the present. And allowing your awareness to go deep within your being now, spiraling in deeper and deeper as if you were walking down a spiral staircase, around and around and deeper and deeper toward the center of your being. Nap to your next breath out. Let yourself sink into that little pause after you've breathed out and before you breathe in again. And notice the next breath begins itself, and notice that place the breath begins. Allow yourself just to rest peacefully in that place of silence. And stillness, calm and presence. Good. The more frequently you return to this place within, the easier it becomes— easier to discover the truth of who you are, to let go of all the delusions and the patterns and the programmed-in propaganda that we're all so loaded with. Let them go. Be present. And now you can look at the world in a very balanced way. You can know yourself in a deeper way and free yourself from the limitations that have been imposed upon you by people and by the past. And right now, at this moment, Realize you can accept yourself exactly as you are. Think to yourself, I accept myself exactly as I am at this moment in time. At this moment, I'm exactly who I'm supposed to be. I am not in this world to live up to anyone else's expectations. No one else in this world is here to live up to my expectations. I accept myself and others Exactly as I am. Good. And knowing that this is the only moment that exists, you can be completely at peace and let yourself go to your safe place, wherever that is. It might be a A room that you had many years ago, maybe even as a child, or could be a closet, or could be under your bed or in the attic. Or it might be a beautiful beach somewhere, or a place high in the mountains, a mountain meadow at springtime surrounded by new blooms. Could be a chapel in the forest. Or a very safe castle on top of a mountain, or floating on a magic carpet, or in a cloud. Wherever you would like to go that's totally safe and peaceful. It can be a completely imaginary place. Let yourself go there. Picture this place around you. Experience it in any way that you can, and be aware that there is a place of wisdom, beauty, peace, and spirit deep within you, and that you have the ability to be in touch with this place. Empty your mind of unnecessary thoughts. You can be in touch with this place, this place from which you can see more clearly yourself and the world with eyes unclouded by longing or prejudice or stress. You can see with a heart free of anxiety or anger or despair. Here is a place where you can see beyond those optical illusions of the mind, where you can open yourself fully to any experience that is nurturing, valuable to you, and leads you to grow. As a being. And right now, you can take another deep breath in, and as you let it out, give yourself permission to be open to new experiences, new understandings, new ways of seeing things, new ways of imagining, new ways of becoming more of the person that you came here to be. And with another breath in and out, bring yourself gently back to the awareness of your body, the surface beneath you, and the space around you. Coming back gently. Coming back slowly, allowing your eyes to gently open, as if awakening early one morning, awakening in time to see the sunrise. Ah, eyes open. Allowing your body to stretch and move, notice how comfortable you feel inside, how present, how peaceful. Good. Isn't it fascinating? That each time you go to that special place within, it's more familiar and you know how to get there more quickly. And you're able to feel it any time of the day if you just turn your awareness within. Good. Hmm. There's a story about this fantastic computer that was built. It's like more powerful than any computer that's ever been imagined. And they say, well, what can we ask this computer? What question is worth asking of such a brilliant computer? And so they, they got together and decided on their question, and they fed the question into the computer. And they asked, is there a God? And the computer mulled it over for a few nanoseconds and responded, you know, that reminds me of a story. In our past sessions, we've talked about love, which I have equated with healing and the life force itself. But we've also mentioned that there's a dark force of greed, rage, and domination, and conflict that has produced so much pain and violence and war in human beings, really since the beginning of our time here on this planet. A tendency that has matured through time— matured or devolved perhaps— into our current world that's full of narcissistic megalomaniacal, compassionless bullies financed by wealthy sociopaths to sow discord, disinformation, insecurity, and chaos through this immense globalized computer brain that we have. It's all being powered by this frantic grasping for the power grasping for power of sociopathic children living in adult bodies with their insatiable, compassionless, untrammeled greed. And in this world of sociopathic bullies with their name-calling and mocking and race-baiting, of agitators, disruptors, those who sow disharmony and chaos for their own pathetic egos. I choose intentionally to be among those whose goal is to empower the healing process at the personal, the national, and the global level. And I would really like to invite you to join me in that, in that process of helping to bring about the healing and the change. To quote Ella Wheeler Wilcox: So many gods, so many creeds, so many paths that wind and wind, while just the art of being kind is all the sad world needs. As we've talked about before, Your thoughts are behaviors. We don't think of it in that way, but your thoughts are behaviors. Your feelings and your emotions are behaviors. You feel angry or afraid or upset or jealous or resentful, that's you. No one's making you feel resentful. No one's making you feel angry. But we've been taught to feel helpless. And therefore, we're not aware that our emotions and feelings are behaviors, and our beliefs are behaviors too. As astounding as that seems at first glance, think about it. We have power, and that power begins in the higher part of our mind, in the prefrontal cortex. And by learning to operate the lower levels of our mind from that prefrontal cortex, then, then we have the opportunity to really become successful. In the ways that we really do want to be successful, in the way that we came here to be successful. I've had a fascinating life. I realized when I was very young that I couldn't sing beautifully, I couldn't play a musical instrument that would, in a way, that made people want to listen. I wasn't nearly as good a basketball player as I wanted to be. But I was really smart. I figured I'd found my gifts. Lots of time I was much more wishing I was more attractive to girls or a better basketball player, but I learned to live with it. So I traveled the world and I wanted to find out what it was that humanity had learned that could help me live a full and complete life. So I climbed the pyramids, climbed the hills of Nepal to see what the Buddhists might have to teach us, visited the Ganges in India and went to the services and went to that beautiful edifice, the Taj Mahal, A teardrop on the cheek of time. 20,000 skilled craftsmen working for 20 years to build this as a tomb to the wife of Shah Jahan, who had given him 13 children, dying during the birth of the 13th. A teardrop on the cheek of time. My goodness. To Bali, where I learned amazing things about prayer. Fantastic. And then, of course, I came back and continued to, to do my work. I learned about this thing called learned helplessness and how we have been trained to feel helpless so that those who want to manipulate us can manipulate us, whether they're corporations or politicians. But, you know, perhaps things don't have to be as bad as they seem. Perhaps there's something else that's possible. What if? What if things are not as hopeless as they sometimes look? What if there's a secret word? So I'm going to ask you today to play a little bit with your imagination and imagine that there is such a word. As I talked before about Khidr, who came to Earth and met the three wisest men from the land of fools, and they said, you "Tell us the secret word because we're the wisest of all in this land." And so, Kshudra said, "Okay," and told them the word. The first wise man said, "Well, that can't be the secret word by which all things could be accomplished. I've heard it before." The second said, "That can't be the magic word because I can write that word." Certainly the word by which all could be accomplished could not be written. The third one says, "Ah, but that word, any person could say that word. Certainly the word by which all could be accomplished could be spoken only by those who are as wise as we." And before Khidr could explain more to them about the word, they were distracted by a group of citizens from the land of fools. And so they excused themselves and hurried off to share their wisdom with people, the people of the land. And Kedra, I'm told, shrugged and went back to heaven. But again, I want you to imagine for a moment that there could be such a word. Imagination. Mark said, "You cannot depend upon your eyes." when your imagination is out of focus. Maxwell Maltz said, "Imagination is essential to create the goal, picture, or image which our automatic mechanism"—that means the unconscious mind—"works on. Thus we act or fail to act not because of will, as is so commonly believed, but because of imagination." And then from Albert Einstein: At times I feel certain I am right without knowing the reason. When the eclipse of 1919 confirmed my intuition, I was not in the least surprised. In fact, I would have been astonished had it turned out otherwise. For imagination is more important than knowledge, for knowledge is limited. Whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution. It is, strictly speaking, a real factor in scientific research. Yeah, how about that? Albert Einstein. In fact, one of his, one of his theorems that I think is about 80 years old now was just finally proven, I think within the last couple of weeks. But he had seen it before in his mind. So, and of course, the spirit is the master, imagination the tool, and the body the plastic material. Paracelsus, 1500 AD. And to be more modern, think different, as the Steve Jobs would say. So, imagining for a moment that there's a word that could help solve whatever problem you can imagine. Maybe it's not exactly just a word. Maybe it's a magic sentence, or maybe it's a prayer, or a meditation, or a ritual, or some other internal process. Maybe it's an algorithm. That can open our eyes to the field of infinite possibilities and take our creativity beyond those limitations that we've been programmed into. Maybe there are many such words or algorithms. Hmm, I don't know. But what I would share with you is my experience as a child. I had a hero, some of you may remember, in fact, he's He's coming back and getting more well-known again. Captain Marvel. I was captivated by the story of Captain Marvel. Billy Batson was an orphan boy who was guided by a stranger to a cave where he meets an old wizard who's been on a 3,000-year crusade against evil. He recruits Billy because it's time for him to die, the wizard. Billy can achieve superhuman strength, including the ability to fly, by simply saying the name of the old wizard, whose name was Shazam. I used to imagine it might be possible to call on such powers. You might say that one of my early spiritual rituals was Shazam. Shazam, which just by chance is an acronym for the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury. So Captain Marvel was a bad dude, right? Like, any kid should want to try that. So I would go around saying, "Shazam! Shazam!" Maybe it worked a little bit, but the one piece of it was particularly interesting to me was the wisdom of Solomon. Perhaps you're aware of what is commonly referred to as the Judgment of Solomon. Solomon, of course, was the biblical king who built the First Temple of Jerusalem, who's revered in Judaism and Christianity, for his wisdom, and in Islam as a prophet. It seems that one day Solomon was called upon to adjudicate a disagreement between two women, each of whom swore that she was the mother of a certain infant. And there you can see the infant and the two mothers and King Solomon. Solomon, because there was no evidence that could prove which woman was the actual mother, this being in the days before we had genetic material that we could test, DNA, Solomon proposed that the only fair thing to do was to chop the child in two and give each woman a half. One of the women thought, "Okay, that's fine, good idea." The other woman was horrified and begged sin— King Solomon instead to give the living child to the other woman. Huh, kind of sounds like American politics, I don't know why. Anyway, at once Solomon decreed that this must be the mother because no true mother would ever consent to allowing her child to be put to death. To me, the essence of Solomon's judgment is that there are elegant and wise solutions to most problems, maybe all of them, but those solutions are sometimes hidden in plain sight, requiring only patience and wisdom to discover it. What enabled him to solve the problem was that he went beyond the apparently irresolvable polarity in the situation, looked at it from a broader perspective. He went beyond the polarity and discovered the power of love to heal. It's another story that I often share because it, it says things so, so quickly and simply. It's the story of two sisters who come into the kitchen and at the same moment see an orange in the middle of the table, and they both leap for the orange and they begin to to fight over it. And at that point, the father enters the room, separates the two sisters, and says, "Ah, you're both sisters, you're equal, so we'll cut the orange into two equal parts," and gives one part, one half orange, to each sister. Well, the sisters calm down. At least the other sister didn't get more than they got, but gosh, They thought, "I wish I had the whole orange to myself." Then the mother came in and said to the first, "Sidd, what did you want the orange for?" And she said, "I wanted the flesh of the orange to make a fruit salad." And she asked the other, "What did you want the orange for?" And she said, "I wanted the rind of the orange to make marmalade." So the mother divided the same orange in a different way. And both daughters, both sisters, had twice as much. Hmm, how did that happen? Can you see the pattern here? In these cases, and in all the other cases I present to you week after week, there is an apparent polarity that seems irresolvable, and yet when there's openness to seeing beyond to seeing the story beyond, to step out of Plato's cave and see reality and stop simply interacting with illusions, suddenly a solution appears that gives you what you really need. Polarity creates images of conflict, and the monkey mind reacts with stress. Cortisol then comes along and inactivates the higher levels of the mind, turns off cognition. It blocks synapse formation in your hippocampus, and so therefore you cannot look clearly at the present problem. You cannot form an image of the present situation, period. That's why your emotions stop you from solving your problems, and instead they activate escape behaviors. And addictions and anger and disappointment and helplessness. The ability to see a deeper and more important truth can take place, as it did in each of these situations, by going beyond that. And the training for going beyond it is meditation, deep relaxation, and deep Prayer. I know of nothing that's more important. In 50 years, when my only goal has been to bring healing to people and couples and families and groups of people, I found nothing more central and important than the ability to relax deeply and to come into the moment where you can begin to see the truth and experience wisdom like that of Solomon. You've seen the yin-yang, and there's the black and the white. And, you know, in our culture, we see black and white as being opposites, and we see polarity and opposition, and black and white fighting. You can, I guess, look at the newspaper today and you see black and white fighting, fighting out there. And yet, what Taoism teaches us is that within everything is the seed of its apparent opposite. That's why white has the black dot in the middle, and black has the white dot in the middle. Yin and yang, the receptive and the creative, it's not one versus the other. Both are essential pieces of a whole, and the wise path to take in our lives is the so-called middle way, the middle path. As one of my mentors, Alan Watts, referred to it, the watercourse way, the path of balance between the hot fire and the deep water. Now, what if most or even all of the obstacles and apparent polarities we encounter in life have an elegant solution that becomes visible when we discover how to see the polarities, the black and white, not as opposite but as essential parts and allow the wisdom within to show us the balance that can lead to a healthy, high-functioning whole. Or as Rainer Maria Rilke said, it could be that all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act just once with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love. Perhaps every problem that seems unsolvable is at its deepest essence offering us an opportunity to see a deeper, integrated, beautiful whole. Can you imagine that such a thing could be possibly true? I can. Wanna see me? Watch. There, I just did. Very powerful, your imagination, if you're willing to let yourself use it. Imagine that within us there is that great power. Little children know it before we teach them to feel helpless, before we traumatize them into behaving and to go through our rubber stamp schools where we don't educate, we train. Educate means to lead forth from within. But imagine that power is still within us. I believe it is, no matter how much It's been suppressed. Watch a 6-month-old make you disappear completely by turning his head away when you approach. Magic! Allow yourself to imagine that there are certain states of relaxation, peace, and wisdom, and serenity that can give us access to this inner power and wisdom. That there is within you a fantastic power a healing force, a life force that we are born with that may have gotten weakened, but it's still within us. Hmm, the strength of Hercules. Hercules, on his way to his 11th labor, had to fight the half-giant Antaeus. Antaeus was the son of the Earth goddess Gaia, and Hercules had to fight him. So Hercules picked him up and threw him to the ground. But the secret was that whenever Hercules touched his Mother Earth, his strength— when Antaeus touched his Mother Earth, his strength was doubled. So he jumped up and wrestled Hercules again. Hercules grabbed him and threw him to the ground again, and he bounced back twice as strong. And Hercules realized that there was a problem here. Something, something was going to need to be done. And he realized, aha, he's getting stronger when he touches the earth. So let me see what happens if I lift him up in the air and don't let him touch the earth. And Antaeus grew weaker and weaker, died. Hercules tossed the shell of his body aside and then went on with his explorations. And so I'm going to ask you to imagine that in a very real way we have been separated from the source of our power, symbolically Mother Earth. We've been separated from it, and for the last few weeks, if you haven't listened to or watched the past webinars, then go back and look at them. They're still online and they're still free. It's at drmiller.com/lifemeditations. Take a look, because what we talked about is exactly how we have been separated from nature and earth, from spirituality. And what we need is to open to a more spiritual, holistic way of looking at the world. Instead, we've been, as I said, misled, especially by the media, especially by the internet. And I hope that you've seen the movies and read some of the books that we've talked about because It's extremely important. I mean, just look at what's happening in our, in our elections. Look at— just look up disinformation. It's incredible. There's a story about an old story of the Soviet Union. There's an old man that lives in the Soviet Union, and once a week this man would appear at a certain checkpoint. He had his horse and he had an old wagon filled with hay, and the Russian soldiers would check to see if there was anything, if he was trying to smuggle anything, and it wasn't. Each week he would come along, and the Russians are thinking, you know, this is ridiculous. Who's carrying hay across the mountains? He must be smuggling. But they looked and they looked and they couldn't find anything. They stuck their bayonets into the hay. Nothing. Nothing was there. Finally, of course, the Soviet Union came to an end, and the soldiers no longer had their job, and they were working as policemen in the city. And who should they see walking down the street but the old man who they had known on the— with his horse and wagon. And he's dressed really fine, he's obviously really wealthy, and they say, "Look, you're rich now, you were this old man." He said, "We know you're smuggling something woggling," and he smiled and said, "Horses and wagons." And Marshall McLuhan in Understanding Media describes the so-called content of the medium, the content of that medium, you know, newspaper, internet site, or whatever, that The content is like a juicy piece of meat that's carried by the burglar to distract the watchdog of the mind. People focus on the obvious, which is the content, but then miss the structural changes that are going on. And that's how we get, we get distracted by things. And we keep making the same mistakes over and over again. There's a story, another joke— I like to tell jokes because it gives us a chance to laugh at our foolishness. The jokes, there's always somebody that's the butt of the joke, but really you are the butt of the joke. And if you don't get it, then you missed the learning that's in every single story, parable, or joke. Anyway, we always pick on the blonde. Anyway, this dumb blonde— that's us, right? She shows up to work and all the guys in the office are huddled around the television and they're watching, they're watching the news. And on the news there's a fellow standing on the top of a 3-story building and he's threatening to jump down into the parking lot and commit suicide. And the cops are trying to say, no, no, come back in. They're trying to get him to come through the window, and the crowd's down, no, don't jump. And they're down, and she walks in, and they— one of the guys who's watching the show turns to her and says, hey, I'll tell you what, I'll bet you $20 that he jumps. She says, okay, you're on, $20. Well, about 30 seconds later, the guy jumps, and the blonde reaches into her wallet and says, ah, "Here's your $20." The guy takes the $20, then he starts to laugh, says, "I can't take your money. It's a videotape. I saw it earlier this morning. I knew he was going to jump." And she said, "Yeah, I saw it too, but I didn't think he was going to do it again." That's us, making that, making those same mistakes again and again. Another story. This one's from The Magus, a marvelous book if you haven't read it, by John Fowles. And it so happens that the young prince has reached the age where it's time for him to go out and find his way in the world. So he goes out with a small retinue of guards, and he's riding along the road outside of the castle where he's never been before. And he'd barely been gone for a few hours when he meets a man, and the man says, "Who are you?" He says, "I'm the prince." And he says, "Where are you going?" He says, "I'm going to seek my fortune in the world." And he said, "Well, you're but a boy, what do you know?" He says, "I know everything that my father has taught me, and so I know a great deal." And the prince says, He asks, "What has he taught you?" He says, "My father has taught me that there are no islands and there are no princesses and there is no God." And the man says, "Ah, well, your father has deceased you, has deceived you, for look," and he waves his hand and there are islands. The prince is startled and on the islands are these creatures that are due too beautiful for the prince to even begin to name. And the prince turns to the man and he says, "And God?" And the man says, "I am God." The prince gets back on his horse and rides back to the castle, says, "Father, you have deceived me because I met a man and he showed me these things." And his father said, "He showed you islets and princesses and a Prince says, "Yes," and said, "What about God?" The prince says, "He said he was God." And the father says, "Hmm, was he wearing mourning clothes with the sleeves rolled up?" And the prince says, "Why, why yes, he was." He says, "Hahaha," says his father, "You've met a magician and he had you under his spell and you only thought you saw those things." The prince got back on his horse and rode out. Now, more determined than ever. And who should he meet but the same man? Uh, and he said to the man, "Ah, I know you. You are not God, and you did not show me those things. You are a magician, and you merely had me under a spell." And the magician— and the man on the road says, "No, no, no, my boy. Quite the contrary. It is your father who is the magician, because when you are in his castle, there are none of these things, and therefore you're under his spell and you can't see them. But here I show them to you, and you feel them, sense them with your own senses. There's your father who is the magician. Well, the son rides back to the castle and says to his father, says, I met the man again, and he says you are the magician. And the father says, yes, I am a magician. And the prince says, then, then the man on the road was, was God? And father says, no, the man on the road was another magician. The son says, no, I must know the truth that is beyond magic. The father said, there is no truth. Beyond magic. And the son said, "Well, I would rather die." And the father says, "Very well," and he waves his hand and Death appears. And Death starts towards the young man and lifts his cape to sweep the young man under. And the prince backs up and looks into the vacant eyes of Death and says, "Wait a minute!" I think I can believe. And the father says, ah, now you do become a magician. Stories. What are these stories talking about? Talking about if we are patient and if we continue to search, we can step beyond our ignorance, beyond our blindness, beyond our learned helplessness. That word by which all can be accomplished. I think we'll take a look at that again when we come back in 2 weeks, but I think you're beginning to have an idea of what it is. So why don't we go ahead and experience A little more meditation. Allow yourself to find that comfortable place, allowing your eyelids to relax. And when your eyelids are so relaxed they just don't want to open at all, gently test them. Send that relaxation throughout all the rest of your body. All the way down through your legs and knees and feet, out through the tips of your toes. Take a deep breath in. As you let it out, let it be a feeling of letting go completely, allowing yourself to become completely calm. And peaceful, relaxed. Allow the air to breathe for you and let yourself return again to that safe place within you. Anytime any unnecessary thoughts come along, imagine those unnecessary thoughts like words on blackboard in your mind's eye. As you gently test your eyelids, erase your mental blackboard. Bring yourself more and more into this moment right now. And try to imagine that each new breath is fresh and new and different, as if you've never breathed before. Sink down into that little pause after you breathed out. Feel that little spark of energy that starts each new breath in. Each breath is your very first breath. Each moment is the first moment. It is said you can never step into the same river twice. It's true. The river you stepped in yesterday is in the ocean now. You are being reborn into each moment. Each breath is a miracle, breathing in life and light, breathing in love. It is love that starts each new breath. It is love that created all that you are. All that you know, all that you have. Love stretching back through time. Feel it in each new breath, the eternity of love that you are. Recall the people in your life that you love, those that you have loved, those that have loved you, those that love you, and feel how deeply you can feel into the quality of love in your being, as if love is the most important thing in the universe at this moment in time. Feel it. Let it bring tears to your eyes. Feel it in your chest. Feel the warmth. Breathe into it. Let it grow stronger. Let it spread throughout all the rest of your body. Imagine that at this moment you can embrace all your lovers. All that have loved you and that you have loved. Now, spiritually embrace them. Honor that love and feel a deep sense of gratitude for whatever love you have felt and for that love that begins each new breath, that flows into you like a golden river, bringing healing and life and peace and tranquility and balance. Love flowing into your heart, flowing throughout all the rest of your body and surrounding you like a golden glow. And feel yourself being held in the loving, pure arms of that spirit that flows through all things. That higher being, that higher power that has created all this incomprehensibly beautiful world and love and gratitude to be here and to know that this awareness is what you're here for at this moment in time. Nurture it, feel it, and be open to each new love that comes along. And know there's a little one within you, the child part of you that needs to feel that love and that acceptance, that tiny being inside that needs to feel your love too. See her, hold her, love her. Let her know that the confusion in the world, the lack of love around, is not her fault and is not her burden to carry. She is here to feel the pure love. Feel that male spirit within you, that part of you, and let him know he is pure love and that he needs feel no guilt. He is forgiven. She is forgiven. You are forgiven. Give love to that little one inside that you already have and feel connected. And let her heal. And breathe power into her. Breathe love into her. Breathe confidence into her. Good. And know, anytime that you need to reconnect with this aspect of your being, it's right there inside. And now, when you're ready, begin to bring yourself back, to gently return to the physical space around you. As if you've been deeply asleep and are waking up to a bright new morning and the willingness to take with you that love that sense of balance and being, to access it whenever you want throughout the day. Good, very good. So, um, I guess we've run a little tiny bit over. It's not new. Once I get going, like I said, it's kind of hard for me to stop it.
