ChatGPT is getting harder to use, not easier. What this means for business users.

Attorney Enrico Schaefer argues that GPT-5 is harder to use than earlier versions, not easier, requiring more sophisticated prompting and deeper model understanding. Business professionals must become expert users of these tools or risk being replaced by AI.

Today I want to talk a little bit about something that I think we all know in the world of AI, especially AI in the business setting. We don't really know where all this is going. And a lot of times— and I've been doing— So I've been doing new and emerging technology law since 1992, when the new and emerging technology was something called the internet. And one of the interesting things over the years that I've been able to witness is that a lot of the things that people think is going to happen when some new technology bursts onto the scene. The things that seem logical and intuitive, it's not what happens. So a lot of times it's the opposite of what it is people thought was going to happen. And I think we're going to see that with AI. We already have in certain regards. One of the things I want to talk about today is the real reality that GPT-5, ChatGPT-5, is actually requires more skill by end users than GPT-4 did and the other models, GPT-03. This is counterintuitive, right? We thought that AI was going to get easier, that everything was going to dumb down so that users could get the max out of these tools with less and less effort, with less and less ability. You wouldn't have to be really skilled and strategic in your use of AI as the models got better. Well, it turns out that's not what's happening. I think by all accounts, you have to be better at prompting with ChatGPT-5 than you did with the prior models, which is interesting because GPT-5, at least if you go with the auto tool, GPT-5 is Going to choose which model is best for you. Okay, well, I suppose that could get better over time, right? And, and maybe that will make things a little bit easier. But I do see this trend line where the skills that you need to use these tools is only increasing. Your insight into how they work, your strategies as to how you're going to work them at work, is becoming more important. This means one major thing is going to be true. And that is that in order for you to excel in the age of AI at work, in order for you to not be replaced by AI, you're going to have to be the best at using these models than anyone else in your organization. And there are massive differences between people who use AI and people who understand How to use AI. Skill, strategy, methodology, all these things are, are things that you have to learn. And that means you have to start using these tools in order to get better at using these tools. Till next time, AI or die.
