In this monologue, Enrico Schaefer argues that law firms face an existential threat unless they radically rethink their approach to artificial intelligence. He identifies the entrenched hourly‑billing model and its associated mindset as the primary barrier to AI adoption, insisting that senior leadership must drive a cultural shift. Schaefer stresses that the real problem is not AI itself but lawyers’ lack of skill in prompting and applying AI tools, which limits productivity gains that could be 2‑10×. He urges lawyers to invest time in learning—watching videos, reading articles, and experimenting with AI—otherwise they risk becoming irrelevant within a few years, as AI advances like a freight train. The video ends with a call to subscribe, share, and start leveling up with AI now.

How do you convince lawyers, law firms, that they need to completely rethink how they're going about their approach to AI, which is basically to kind of pay attention to it, talk a little bit about how important it's going to be, but not really move the ball, not really do anything in order to move the ball forward? And it is a challenging issue because There are no easy answers to this. You're talking about rethinking a business model that's been around for dozens of years, the hourly billing system, the mentality that comes with hourly billing, where all you're thinking about is how many hours did each person bill per week, per month, per year, how much of it was collected. So there has to be this big mind shift and shift in approach at the top levels of a law firm if there's going to be change, if there's going to be any real progress towards AI adoption in your firm. So I have to deal with this with, with my firm as well. And the challenge is that people are so busy doing their work that they convince themselves that, well, AI is not really going to help me. AI isn't really that great yet. You're wrong. You are absolutely wrong. If you are deluded yourself that you are better without AI than with AI, you are living in a fantasy world. So you have to realize that you can be 2x, 5x, 10x better right now today if you start learning how to use these AI tools. And the problem isn't with AI, it's with you. You don't know how to use these tools. You don't know how to use them properly. You're not getting great value out of them because you don't know what you're doing. Understanding how to interact, how to prompt, how to apply AI to specific tasks or projects, how to get the most out of the functionality that's built into the tools that is changing by the week. You have to commit to that. And that means that you have to learn. You have to watch videos. You have to read articles. You have to interact with the AI so that you can continue to figure out what works and what doesn't. Until you do that, until you do that, you are going to suffer the delusion that maybe AI is not really important. My name is Enrico Schaefer. Go ahead and subscribe, share this with your top people at your firm, and start to level up using AI, or you will die. You will no longer be relevant at some point in the future, whether that's 5 years, 10 years, 3 years, or this year. No one knows, but it's coming like a freight train.
