Here are 4 pieces of common business advice that are complete BS. 1, hire and get out of the way. I did that and it failed because they didn't have the context or the right vision. As a founder, you have to be involved to guide the team, but not necessarily micromanage all the time. 2, take a vacation to cure burnout. Complete BS. Burnout happens when the company is losing momentum. Is the cure. A vacation won't fix a disaster waiting for you back at the office. 3, and this one is huge, hire for potential. I used to spend 80% of my time on potential. Now it's reversed. I hire people who have already solved the problem that I have. That pattern recognition is priceless. And 4, the end goal is to sell. My take is I want maximum freedom. I'm looking to build a generational company on my terms and not building just to exit. I learned these lessons the hard way so you don't have to.
