Are You a Hero or an NPC? (A Simple Hack to Take Control of Your Life)

Eric Siu uses gaming analogies to explain the difference between living like an NPC (passive, following scripts) and a hero (active, building skills). He argues you need a marketable skill, leverage through partnerships or business, and the habit of taking action to control your life.

Have you ever thought about the people that kind of just sit around in life, can't really figure out what to do? These are basically what? These are the NPCs. These are the non-player characters, right? So in this video, we are going to talk about which one you actually are. Are you the NPC or are you the hero? We all have our own stories. We all are the protagonist, right? Those of you that are watching this right now, you are— your perception is you are the hero. But let's think about this for a second. Okay? Let's use some gaming analogies. Diablo, playing Diablo. You know, you're out there to kill the devil. And when you first start out, you start out in town, right? You are the hero. And when you're walking around town, you know, you hang out, you talk to this guy, his name is Deckard Cain, okay? Deckard Cain, stay a while and listen, right? He's the guy that guides you. Maybe sometimes he'll identify, you know, the items that you have. He's the wise old man, right? Or maybe you go to the blacksmith. The blacksmith is always there. Deckard Cain's always there. They're always just standing there. They're always there waiting for you, right? But you know what? They're just standing there. They're static. They're not moving around. They are non-player characters. So let's say you are playing World of Warcraft and then you go talk to Jaina Proudmoore, who, she's a wizard, right? But she's also a She's also a hero, but she's a non-player character because she's just kind of standing there. In life, what are you trying to do? You're trying to be flexible, you're trying to move around, and you want to become the hero. What happens in life is you look at the people that are struggling, that complain all the time, that can't get things going, that seem to blame other people, point fingers. These are the non-player characters. The problem with their life is they don't look within, they point the fingers at other people, and then what happens is life just flies by. 10, 20, 30, 40 years go by and all of a sudden their life is over and they're just bitter. But if you take a look at the people that are control of your own life, what happens is you start to become the hero. Because even when you're playing Diablo or any other MMORPG, when you're first starting out, you are weak in the beginning, but you're fighting. You're fighting to get stronger and stronger and stronger, and eventually you get the right items, you kill the nice bosses, you get the nice loot, you get the nice armor, you get to get all the fame, all the glory. It's because you worked harder than other people and because you knew what you wanted, and then you became the hero of your story. Most people are are struggling because they haven't thought about how they can become the hero and take control of their own life. What a hero does first is they cultivate the great habits, they level up a little bit, they get a little stronger, get a little stronger. They have these little habits as power-ups. What happens afterwards is they focus then on one skill that they know is very marketable, and then from there they decide if they wanna take it to the next level, right? They can partner up, work on an amazing quest together like a business, then take it up to the next level, and then maybe do other things with those resources too, right? But when you're able to do that, you're able to create leverage. And then you can become an even stronger hero. This is high level, but I wanted you to just think about this. In your life, what do you think you are right now? Are you truly the NPC or are you the hero? And if you think you are the NPC, what actions are you going to take to make yourself a hero? Okay, drop that in the comments. And if you think you're a hero right now, tell us what you're doing to become heroic. All right, so that's it for this video, but make sure you check out the next video.
