Eric Siu reflects on hiring 4-5 executives and warns against a common mistake: choosing candidates with impressive resumes who lack direct experience in the role. Prefer people who have been promoted into the position over those you're betting on for potential.
Let's talk about the topic of hiring CEOs and hiring GMs, because I've hired 4 or 5. And you can make the argument that I didn't hire the right people. I ended up hiring people that came from large agencies and they had stellar reviews. But the challenge was that they actually hadn't been there, done that. Ideally, you're looking for someone that's been in that role for a while. Ideally, they've been promoted. And my whole thing was I was trading on potential and you cannot trade on potential. Sure you can, maybe with a less risky role. Yeah.
