Eric Siu explains Elon Musk's claim that source code will become obsolete as AI tools advance, the way assembly language did. Instead of writing code line by line, developers will write specifications and verify what AI produces. This shift is already happening.

Elon actually tweeted this yesterday. He said this, source code is on the verge of becoming like assembly. CTO sent this to me yesterday. I'm like, I don't even know what that means. I asked Twitter or X to summarize it, and Elon basically is saying that code— AI coding tools have advanced to the point where developers increasingly trust outputs without reviewing generated source code, mirroring the historical shift away from manual assembly programming after reliable compilers emerged. The next evolution is AI systems will produce optimized binary executables directly, eliminating traditional source code as an intermediary step in software development. There's too many big words here. Practically, it means software development stops being about writing and editing lines of code and becomes about describing what you want and verifying that the resulting program actually does it. I think it's already happening right now. I think a lot of this stuff is just gonna go in this direction and humans are just gonna say, hey, I want this, and you verify, hey, is this actually what I wanted? If it is, great, no complaints.
