Elon Musk Says Coding Is Becoming Like Assembly

Elon Musk argues AI coding tools are advancing so fast that developers will soon stop reviewing source code entirely, with AI generating optimized binaries directly. The shift means programmers describe what they want and verify the output, not write code line by line.

Elon actually tweeted this yesterday. So he said this, source code is on the verge of becoming like assembly. So Elon basically is saying that AI coding tools have advanced to the point where developers increasingly trust outputs without reviewing generated source code, mirroring the historical shift away from manual assembly programming after reliable compilers emerged. I have no idea what that means, right? So he's like, the next evolution is AI system will produce optimized binary executables directly, eliminating traditional source code as an intermediary step in software development. Practically, it means software development stops being about writing and editing lines of code and becomes about describing what you want and verifying that the resulting program actually does it. We don't review code right now. People talk a lot about technical debt and things like that, right? They talk about the codebase being very bloated, and Nvidia is actually notorious for having a very bloated codebase. Whereas before, if you came from Silicon Graphics, it was very perfectionist, right? Elon's saying like, it's probably going in that direction where you're not even going to be talking about having too much technical debt because the stuff is going to be so good, eventually it's going to clean itself up and we're not even going to need to understand what's under the hood. That's all that he's saying. And I think it's already happening right now. Don't trust AI, it's not reliable, right? I think a lot of disruption is going to go in this direction and humans are just going to say, hey, I want this. And you verify, hey, is this actually what I wanted? If it is, great, no complaints.
