Eric Siu argues the middle class is disappearing as tuition, home prices, and car payments keep rising while wages stagnate. The traditional dream of homeownership and stability has become unattainable for most people, widening the gap between the rich and everyone else.
Why is the middle class screwed? Well, it was just earlier what I said about the middle class. Everything is just comparatively more expensive. Tuition is more expensive than it used to be, you know, in the '50s, '70s, and '80s. Homes are more expensive. Even the car payment is more expensive. So that dream of a white picket fence house is kind of gone for most people in the middle class. And these days, I think the class system is becoming more divided. It's almost like you're either rich or you're not. And I think that's a big problem that we have in this country.
