Eric Siu argues that motivation and resilience can't be trained into people. He describes trying to build these traits in others and realizing they require specific life experiences or something you're born with. The best you can do is create the conditions for them to emerge.

I've realized that that's a fallacy, that you think you could train people to be motivated, that you can train people to, you know, be relentless learners, to be biased to action. You can't train that. That's a mindset thing. There's certain things that are much easier to train. There's certain things that are much harder to train. And I think if you're going to make a transformation like that, to become a relentless learner, to have a bias to action, to make bold long-term bets, to be super resilient, you have to go through a lot in life and there has to be, you have to be built a certain way. And so I thought we could do that in the beginning of the year. And I just realized this like 7 months into it, you know, we've created conditions for success and the ones that are— that they had it all along, like, it's been no problem for them. I think about it, I'm like, well, I can't make them change their mindset.
