Eric Siu breaks life problems into two buckets: people in a bad place who need therapy, and people doing okay who want to become great and need coaching. The distinction matters because the help you need depends on where you're starting from.

I kind of put life problems, life issues into 2 buckets. One bucket is people who are in a bad place and want to get to an okay place. You know, you're depressed and you want to not be depressed, or you're— somebody in your life, you had a horrible breakup and you want to get over the breakup, right? I think therapy is probably better for that. The second bucket is you're okay, but you want to be great. And I think that's where coaching comes into play more. Therapists don't really— like, if you come into a therapist's office and you're like, everything's pretty good, like, I'm pretty happy, I want to be fucking crushing it. Like, a therapist can be like, well— So therapy's level 1. Yeah, it's like therapy is kind of like bandaging the wound, whereas like coaching is kind of like building the muscle. Oh, interesting. Never thought of it that way. Clearly you've thought about this.
