In this solo video, Eric Siu argues that the common "Thank God It's Friday" (TGIF) mindset is a hidden career killer. He explains that dreading Mondays signals a misaligned job that fails to satisfy three core human needs—contribution, connection, and vitality. Siu critiques the notion of work‑life balance, proposing instead a work‑life harmony where work and personal fulfillment coexist. He outlines a progressive career path: start with low‑skill jobs, acquire marketable skills, climb the ladder, and eventually create your own venture. He emphasizes that luck arises from the intersection of preparation and opportunity, and recommends taking "mini‑retirements"—regular breaks to recharge—rather than postponing fulfillment until traditional retirement. Siu uses personal anecdotes (e.g., taking time off in Spain, his agency Single Grain encouraging breaks) and references iconic figures like Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger who work because they love it. The video concludes with a call‑to‑action to watch a follow‑up video on guaranteed marketing jobs.

Here's why thank God it's Friday is a phrase that will kill your career. When I first started working, I was working a dead-end job. I was doing data entry. I was only making $32,000 a year. So I think that was below minimum wage at the time. And for me, I dreaded every single Monday and I looked forward to every Friday because I was looking forward to the weekend because I would have freedom from doing the same monotonous work where I wasn't growing. I didn't have a great manager. I wasn't doing inspiring work, nor did I really understand what my mission or the vision of the company was. TGIF, what it does is ultimately tricks your mind into thinking that it's life versus work, when in reality, Warren Buffett at age 92 and Charlie Munger, his partner, 97 years old, they continue to work because they enjoy it. And so to me, the ultimate version of success is being able to wake up every day to work on whatever it is that you want to work on. But in order to get to that level, you have to continue to level up and you have to beat the bosses at each level, right? So in the very beginning, maybe you have to learn skills and then you get minimum wage jobs and you beat that boss. Maybe you become really good at marketing, you become a marketing manager, then marketing director, then maybe eventually you start your own company Everyone has their own path to success, right? But you have to work your way up to get there. It's not going to be given to you. And so the first step here is to take TGIF out of your mind. The moment you start dreading Mondays, that's when you know that your job is actually the problem. It's actually your fault at the end of the day if you find that you continue to say thank God it's Friday because you dread Mondays, right? And ultimately, this is what happens to most people in life. They become non-player characters or NPCs, and they just do the same thing over and over, looking forward to a retirement at age 60 or 70 years old or so. And what you end up finding is most successful people that I know In their 60s, 70s, 80s or so, they've tried retiring before and it's just not fun, right? Like, they enjoy doing something, they enjoy contributing. And so each human being, the 3 things that matter to them is contribution. That's one. Are they contributing to society? Connection. They want to connect with other people. And vitality, their health, right? Whether it's mental health or physical health, you have to make sure that you take care of yourself in all those aspects. If you find that you're dreading Mondays, you're probably not taking care of all 3 of those. You're not contributing as much as you'd like to, which is why you hate your job. There's no sense in looking forward to, oh, like, I want to be on the beach. I'll tell you, As someone that's been on the beach, after a day on the beach, I am bored, right? What you don't want to do is do this whole work-life balance thing. I don't believe in work-life balance because it separates the two. Again, it pits one against the other. What you ultimately want to look for is work-life harmony. When you are looking at opportunities ahead of you, you want to constantly be asking yourself, when I'm 80 years old, am I going to regret not having done this, right? And so luck is where preparation and opportunity kind of combine, right? That's the whole formula around how you can create your own luck, how you can take advantage of opportunities. You want to seize these opportunities as they come over to you, right? The final thing I'll add to this is that, look, most people spend 40 to 60 years, 70 years working or so, and then at the very end they're unhappy. Instead of thinking about retiring at the very end, just take mini retirements along the way. And if your job doesn't allow you to do so, then it's probably not the right job for you. For example, my ad agency Single Grain, we actually tell people to go take time off, like whenever you feel like you need it. For example, I went to Spain this summer, and when I came back, I came back full of ideas. I was really invigorated, and it's because I had that space to take time off, right? And so I have always felt that whenever I have thought in my mind, thank God it's Friday, or TGIF, it's always been because I just wasn't happy. So you have to think to yourself, like, if you're constantly saying that, are you really happy in your current role? And are you really fulfilling your true potential if you find that you're repeating that same phrase over and over? Now, we talked about careers, but if you want to learn how to get a job guaranteed, check out this video over here.
