This is a YouTube video titled "The cultural legacy of asian excellence" (created 2025-02-04) containing an English conversational excerpt between two unlabeled speakers. They discuss Asian cultural expectations around enduring pain, parental pressure to develop grit, and contrasting attitudes toward happiness in Asian versus Western cultures.
They don't know how to go through the pain. And when I think about just whether you're Japanese, Korean, Chinese, or whatever, if you're Asian, you know how to go through the pain, right? It's a lot of pain, right?
This idea of like happiness being the goal, that wasn't the goal as an Asian kid. No. Like, it was like, Mom, like, I'm not happy. She'd be like, uh, no, the goal is to have more grit and to like learn how to get up when you're beaten down.
Yeah, get straight A's or I'll beat your ass. Right. Happiness is not even a word.
I know, so funny. I'm not saying that's right either. There's probably some balance, but, um, a lot of other cultures, you know, they don't talk about happiness as much as Western culture does.
