Eric Siu explains why total hands-off management backfired at his company. He tried giving employees complete freedom by disappearing from the office, but things fell apart. Sometimes leaders need to stay involved as the "annoying parent" or "chief reminder officer."
So, I read this book called Let My People Go Surfing from the Patagonia co-founder. OK. And then it talks about, you know, his people go surfing in the middle of lunch and all. I'm like, that sounds good. Let my people go surfing. So, you know what I do? I disappear from the office. And this is the whole thing. It's like, oh, I want to see people grow. It's like, no, like, you need to be there. You need to be the annoying parent. You need to be the chief reminder officer. And that was the first time where I experienced me not being involved, everything kind of falling apart.
