Leaky Gut Syndrome and Fertility

This content was created by Erica Hoke. This content was uploaded by Erica Hoke. This is a YouTube video titled "Leaky Gut Syndrome and Fertility" (uploaded November 4, 2021). It features a single presenter speaking directly to an audience about gut health and how leaky gut can impair iron absorption and contribute to infertility. The speaker shares a personal infertility story involving low ferritin and multiple iron IV infusions, explains the difference between serum iron and ferritin, describes leaky gut and its common causes (processed foods, sugar, caffeine), and offers practical advice (request ferritin testing, consider supplements like Floradix). The video also promotes a related online community (Infertility Success / Community Chat) and the creator's live schedule.

How are you today? Happy hump day. It's hard to believe that it's Wednesday again, but I am going to check my settings while I'm on here because I've had all kinds of technical difficulties and the last few videos have not gone out. So my apologies. Somebody in the universe must not want me— want my message to get out. That's what I think about that. So today we're going to be talking about gut health, leaky gut syndrome, and for fertility and why gut health matters so much for fertility and some of the testing that doctors often overlook. So my personal story is, is that when I was going through infertility, I not only had anemia to the point that I needed iron IV transfusions, I'll come back to that in just a second, but I had something called low ferritin. So the way that it was explained to me, is that your iron count, like your total iron binding, I think is what it's called, is, um, it's not necessarily your available, um, iron for energy. So the thing that makes your iron available to your body for energy is something called your ferritin. So if you are anemic and you're still struggling with infertility, make sure that the doctor— this is something that you're probably going to have to ask for or double-check that it's— you've been tested for is something called your ferritin count. So your ferritin count, your iron can appear normal and your ferritin account can appear very, very low. So you still have those symptoms of like tiredness and things like that. So in my case, I had low ferritin and my iron appeared normal, but I was getting iron IV infusions. So I had 2 different rounds of iron IV infusions. And at the time, I wasn't as knowledgeable about how to advocate for myself. And I didn't ask the question why. Why, as a young woman, am I having such an iron absorption problem? So I was taking tablets. The tablets were not being absorbed at all. I was not able to— my body was not able to absorb the iron into my bloodstream from taking oral iron supplements. And I did take something that is a liquid iron herbal supplement called Floradax. So it doesn't taste great, but it also is not an IV. So I recommend that. I'll see if I can find the link for that and drop it here in the comments section when we're done with the video. But the Floridax did help me some, but it didn't improve my iron enough to be an appropriate level. So sorry, I feel like I have a bug on my leg there. So I ended up with 2 iron, 2 rounds of iron IV infusions, one before my first son and one after my first son, in between him and when I got pregnant with the twins. And I do credit both of these things, uh, both of those infusions with helping me get, get pregnant. So the iron IV infusion is just what it sounds like. I think that I had to do, um, it takes an hour, so I had to do it an hour, um, 6 days in a row, 4 days in a row. Pretty intense. So you go every day for an hour and you get this iron in an IV, you sit, and it, um, you know, brings your iron level up. But then why was it dropping? So the thing that I've learned since then is that I had pretty poor gut health. I've talked about gut health a little bit here with you before, but leaky gut is something that a lot of people suffer with and they don't even know. It presents itself in symptoms that are kind of widely varied. Sometimes people think, oh, leaky gut, I couldn't possibly have that, I don't have stomach upset, I don't have diarrhea, I don't have a bunch of gas or bloating. Then they have no idea that their migraines are caused by leaky gut. They have no idea that their infertility is caused by leaky gut because they're not really having those other symptoms. So I'm going to explain leaky gut to you in just the smallest nutshell. We can talk about it later, but the way that it affects, um, your iron is is because of absorption. So, there's other things that cause, contribute to leaky gut and contribute to malabsorption of iron and other minerals, which are really, have been linked to contributing to infertility. So, most people think, and I want you to think what you think about this in your head, as your intestines, your gut, as a garden hose, nice and sealed and dirty, but your gut is actually like this. So when it's healthy, it does look like this with the junctions in between my fingers here on this line as being very tight. But as you get leaky gut from eating a high processed food diet, lots of sugar, lots of caffeine, those junctions separate like this. And then those holes in between my finger is what is leaking into your bloodstream. So you're gut is actually leading— leaking toxin waste into your bloodstream. And that's leaky gut in a nutshell, you guys. So as far as iron goes, iron can't be absorbed in the gut. You might have to have an iron IV. You want to get that test for ferritin to see, um, where you're at. And look into the symptoms of leaky gut, um, and see if you think that it might apply to you, because it definitely is going to affect your and fertility. Hey guys, if you like this kind of content and you're watching on YouTube, go ahead and hit that like and subscribe so you get notified when I go live Monday, Wednesday, and Friday here. And also I have a group and I dropped the link in the comment section there for you to join us. It's Infertility Success, um, sorry, Community Chat. And we talk about things like this in there. Um, how you can self-identify, um, different things that are going on in your body to move you towards, um, the family of your dreams, right? Okay, health and blessings to you guys. I will see you Friday. Bye-bye.
