In this brief motivational segment, Evan Carmichael opens with the theme “Hire your weaknesses,” then hands over to Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx. Blakely shares her early entrepreneurial experience, describing how she initially performed every role in her startup due to limited funds. She explains that once she could afford it, she hired a day‑to‑day CEO—her first major hire—to take over tasks she wasn’t good at or didn’t enjoy. The core message is that small‑business owners should quickly identify tasks they dislike or are weak at, and delegate or “clone” themselves by hiring specialists, allowing them to focus on their strengths. The segment ends with a call‑to‑action encouraging viewers to think about who their first weakness‑hire will be.
Good morning, Believe Nation. Today's message is hire your weaknesses. Over to you, Sarah Blakely.
I wake up every morning with espresso, keep me going.
I always say as soon as you can afford to hire your weaknesses or the things you don't enjoy as much, do it. And anytime that you can delegate and clone yourself kind of and try to get some additional support, it's a It's a great moment in a small business. You know, I hired my day-to-day CEO about 2 years into starting Spanx. And up until that point, you know, when you have no money, you're every department. So I got to learn very quickly what I'm really better at, what I'm not as good at, what I enjoy doing, what I don't enjoy doing. And I couldn't wait to hire someone to do— fill in my weaknesses and just focus on my strengths.
So the question of the day today is, who was the first person you hired, or who is Who is going to be the first person that you hire in your business? What is their role going to be? For me, the first person I hired was a guy who did database work for me. I hired him for 1 hour a week because that freed up more than an hour of my time per week to let me focus on bigger picture stuff. He was better at doing that task than I ever would be. I didn't want to get good at that, and it was a relief. And since then, I continued to build up my team. So who is the first person that you hired? What did they do? Or who is going to be the first person that you will hire? Leave in the comments below and join the discussion. Thank you so much for watching. Have an amazing day. Continue to believe, and I'll see you again tomorrow morning for another shot of espresso.
