In this interview‑style video, host Speaker A asks Jim Carrey about his long‑standing visualization habit, including the famous anecdote where Carrey wrote himself a $10 million check for acting services and kept it in his wallet until a role in Dumb and Dumber paid out. Carrey describes visualization as a way to feel better and keep his goals in sight during a period of poverty. The conversation then shifts to Dan Lok, who sharply criticizes the passive “The Secret” approach of merely visualizing a check and waiting for the universe to deliver it, calling it “bullshit” and warning that without concrete action one may face eviction. Lok admits he believes in manifestation but insists that action is essential; he recounts his own failed attempt at pure visualization before taking decisive steps that led to a larger payoff. Finally, Speaker D frames the video’s purpose as a call for balance, urging viewers to embrace both perspectives—the power of imagination and the necessity of effort—coined as the “genius of the AND.” The video thus juxtaposes personal anecdote, skeptical analysis, and a conciliatory synthesis to present a nuanced view of manifestation strategies.
Because I think it's really a marvelous thing, that visualization thing you did. Do you all read about this or hear this, that you used to go up on Mulholland Drive and park? Yeah, every night. And visualize seeing yourself as— Yeah, I would visualize, uh, yeah, I would visualize— This is when you were broke and poor.
Right, having directors interested in me and people people that I respected, uh, um, saying, you know, I like your work, or whatever that is. And, and, uh, I would visualize things coming to me that I wanted, or whatever.
This was in like 1987, '85? Yeah.
And I had nothing at that time, so it was like— it— but it just made me feel better. It made me— at that time, all it really was for me was kind of making me feel better. I would drive home and think, well, I do have these things, and they're out there. I just don't I don't have a hold of them yet, but they're out there.
So didn't you write yourself a check? I heard that you did. Is that true?
I wrote myself a check for $10 million for acting services rendered, and I gave myself 5 years— or 3 years, maybe. And I dated it Thanksgiving 1995. And I put it in my wallet, and I kept it there, and it deteriorated and deteriorated and stuff. And— but then— Just before Thanksgiving 1995, I found out that I was gonna make $10 million on— I think it was Dumb and Dumber.
Dumb and Dumber, yeah.
I read this book because I was in disbelief because people will tell— here's the strategy for success of The Secret, right? Go into your house and into a quiet room and you close the lights, draw the shades, and sit on a couch and visualize a big fat check. $25,000, $1,000 US, okay, with your name on it. And I want you to imagine that check and just make that check go bigger in your mind and make it real, more real, and just put it out into the ether of the universe and the law of attraction will take hold. Just think about it. Bullshit, right? Hello? If that's your strategy for success, the only thing that will show up in your mailbox is not the check, it's a freaking eviction notice. From your landlord. They'll be towing away your car. Your wife, your husband will be over at the next-door neighbor, and you'll be still saying, "Where's the check? Where's the check?" Okay, the secret is a load of crap, okay? Do I believe in manifestation? Yeah! Damn straight I do. But you got to take action. I'm one of those unfortunate people. I tried it. I really did. I swear I tried it. I read the books. Well, let me try, you know. So I sat there and I prayed for the check. Never came. But I went out and started taking action, guess what? The check came with an extra couple of zeros.
My intention with this video was to spread understanding, not fighting. I want you to see that it's not one point of view or the other. You can pull and learn from both, especially the one that you don't immediately resonate with. Embrace the genius of the AND.
