Jeff Harrison explains how local businesses can use ChatGPT and other AI tools to improve marketing, with practical advice on prompt engineering and content creation. He stresses that human oversight remains essential when using AI-generated material.
Welcome to another episode of the Local Voice, hosted by Jeff Harrison, a practitioner in the world of digital marketing. Get ready to take some notes. Let's begin.
Welcome to Another Local Voice. I'm Jeff Harrison. Today's going to be a little bit of a different approach. I just want to share some things that have been going on and it's, it's been a very interesting and exciting time. And what I'm really talking about is how businesses can or should be, I don't want to say should be, can leverage AI in many different areas to help them be better at marketing and getting more customers. I mean, who doesn't want more customers, right? So today as we discuss this, I just want to share a couple of things that I think are pretty wild. First of all, I'm sure you're already using things like chatgpt. If you're not, it's kind of the old, the og, the old goat in the room. It's continuing to evolve. It has great tools on it. It's all about making sure that you ask the right questions. We call them prompts or they're called prompts. And in a class that I teach, it's a five week class on how to leverage AI for local businesses, we talked about this and understanding a couple of things. One is if you're using ChatGPT as of this, right, as of this podcast, as a search engine, you're probably going to be disappointed. And if you're expecting it to 100% of the time, give you a complete, whether it's a social media post, it's a blog post, whatever it may be, and it doesn't require any tweaking, you're going to be disappointed. And I kind of, I kind of likened it during the class when I gave this, this recent class, Class 4, I said, I want you to consider ChatGPT is like if you were having your house painted, they paint the house, you come back in and do the trim, you're doing the detail work, the painter in it, in this case, ChatGPT or probably almost any. Whether it's, whether it's Meta AI that just came out or it's Gemini and you're writing things on those platforms, it's doing the heavy lifting. It's putting up the, it's putting the foundation, it's putting, it's building the walls and the framing, you're the one that's going in and saying, I'm hanging pictures, I'm putting the sofa here. In other words, you're going to put the detail into It, And I want to make something very, very clear when you're using AI in whatever capacity. And I, I can't think of one right now where AI cannot jump in or you cannot inject AI into your business from a marketing standpoint, that it will not help. That's from writing emails, to creating blog posts, to creating social media posts, to writing scripture videos, you even making videos, all of this, writing your ads, posting your ads, all that kind of stuff. Artificial intelligence will help you do that. But, and I say this strongly, you need to make sure there's a human involved. As an example, at Swing Point Media, the name of our company, our company, we do content marketing for local businesses and in every area, when it, when we have AI produce a piece, we look it over, we tweak it, we make sure it's accurate, that the links are really going someplace and it's really being used, or, excuse me, it's really authentic and we make sure the words are correct. Or like, as an example, I just made this assessment for a lead magnet to help generate more leads for a local agency, H Vac company. By the way, if you're interested and you'd like to know more about that, let me know, put it in the chat. Send me a, send me a, an email at Jeff Swingpoint Media and say, hey, I listen to your podcast and I'm interested in that assessment tool and I'll, I'll share it with you and we'll get going. But even in that situation, if we just let it on its own device, it did a great job. But as I started looking through there, these questions as an example, I think when we first started, there were 68 questions, and we went through there and there were a lot of redundant questions, so we had to change that. There were a lot of questions, or I shouldn't say a lot, but there were some questions in there going, I'm not sure exactly what that is. Even my, my business owner said, I'm not sure what, what that is. Well, this is where a human jumps in, does the editing and says, okay, now this is what I want. But as far as the heavy lifting, like putting the, putting the, the questions together and creating the form and, and doing the artwork that drives it, that was, that was unmatched. It would take hours and hours and hours, and it literally took minutes. It's hard to beat. Well, if you're a business out there who's not leveraging some of these tools, keep in mind it's not a level playing field. You're going to Be, it's almost like, you know, one person has an engine in their marketing and you have an anchor. It's just holding you back. You can't, you have to start utilizing some of these tools. But if you're going to do it, make sure you have a human involved. So this is really, I just want to jump in and share a couple of things today that were, I think, important as a local business owner that you can use, that you can leverage. One of the tools that I think if you're not using it, if you haven't jumped in that yet, start with chat GPT. And the one thing I want you to take away from this, when it says, okay, I'm gonna, I'm gonna give that a shot is more is better. And what I mean by that is, before you start. Well, let me back up a second. Many, many years ago, I was at a, a live conference or event with, with a speaker, Zig Ziglar. Zig Ziglar. And he was talking about. And if you've ever heard Zig Ziglar talk, you know, what I'm about to say is there's a thing called priming the pump. And he said, you know, you're, you're priming, priming, priming, priming before the water ever comes out. Well, in this situation, you are going to make sure that you prime the AI pump. In other words, the more information you give it about you, your business, its exact audience, what your goals are, what the, what the, the target is for that particular message, what your call to action would be, the better off you are not just saying, hey, write me 10 social media posts. And it's just like, okay, well, I don't know who you are. The better you are and the better the quality of content. Again, you still need to go in there and tweak it a little bit. One of our students this morning, he was trying to tweak the prompt to the point where it would give him the perfect outcome. Will that happen? Sometimes it does. I created some emails for a client the other day. I looked at them. They were outstanding. I sent them to the client, they approved them as written. But that's just because our prompts have gotten so, so good. Now, if you're new, keep in mind you're going to get some results. And then what I'd recommend you do is either a, has the content come back and it's pretty darn close and just requires a little, a little tweaking, or is it something you say, okay, I missed the mark. If that's the case. Tweak your prompt, tweak what you're asking the AI to do until you get a. I'm going to call it a near perfect response and then go in there and tweak it and you're good to go and try testing it out. Try this on social media posts. Try on email copy, blog posts. Blog posts, I would say, you know, try to keep it in that 750 to maybe a thousand words and make sure you really give it a lot of good information to glean off of because if not, it will work hard. It being chat GP will work really hard to try to fill in that void of. Let's say they, let's say they get the 750 words and you ask for a thousand. It's going to try to re. To fill in that void. And you could start seeing hallucinations, they're making stuff up. Or you could see it's just filling in the blank and it's not putting correct information there. So the better you prime that pump. Like Zig Ziglar said, when the water starts coming out, it's a lot easier to do. So that's my takeaway for today. It's a little quick message about, hey, what's going on in the world of AI right now? It is 4:22. It's about one o' clock in the afternoon, and that's what's going on right now. It, it is moving at a very quick pace. There's two things over the weekend that I did that was really, really cool, and there's a, there's a new terminology coming down the pike. You know, this whole thing, it went from bots to avatar to where's it going now? Think clone, think clone. All right, I'll see you next time on the Local Voice. My name is Jeff Harrison.
