How to adjust tension on a STIHL chainsaw

This is a YouTube video titled "How to adjust tension on a STIHL chainsaw" containing a detailed instructional demonstration by Raleigh Hill from Mobile, Alabama, explaining how to tighten the chain on various models of STIHL chainsaws. The content is a practical tutorial focused on chainsaw maintenance, recorded in June 2023.
Hi, my name is Raleigh Hill. I work here for sunsouth Yonder here in Mobile, Alabama. And I'm going to demonstrate this morning on how to tighten a chain on a chainsaw. In front of me today, I have a steel MS.271 or a farm boss. It's pretty simple how to tighten the chain up if your chain's loose. This one is not loose because it just pulled it off the wall. But your chain, you want it to be about that tight. But in order to tighten it, you'll loosen these two nuts and then you'll turn the screw to tighten the chain. But there's a diagram. You'll turn it righty tighty, lefty loosey to tighten it. So you'll essentially loosen this up and turn it to tighten it. And once you've got it to the desired tension, you'll tighten these nuts back up. My rule of thumb is tighten it until the vane pops out in my arm. Some people just tighten it till you feel resistance, but that's pretty much all there is to it. So here in front of me, I have a Stihl MS.180 and then a MS.170, the MS.180 to tighten the chain on. The MS.180, of course, once again, you'll make sure your chain breaks off. The tensioner is all dial. You don't have to. There's no tool required for the 180 because it has the easy tighten system. So to loosen your chain guard, you twist the this cover and your chain tensioner is this dial up at the top. It's just a little black dial and it's got an arrow pointing to a plus. Once again, it's righty tighty, lefty loosey. So once you get to the desired tension you want, you can tighten it back up by twisting this dowel. And then on the 170, it's the same as most of the big saws. As far as loosening your. Your chain guard, of course, make sure your chain breaks off. You'll loosen your two nuts here, that hold on your chain guard. And then the tensioner screw is actually behind the chain up against the housing. So if you follow these simple steps, that's pretty much the easiest way I know how to explain tightening the chain on a chainsaw. This will work on any steel chainsaw.
