INSIDE X9 - #8 Energy Efficiency | John Deere

Francisco Jimenez walks through the engineering behind John Deere's X9 combine harvester, explaining how its engine, transmission, and design innovations cut fuel consumption while boosting harvest performance.
Every single component is designed for efficiency. It's why throughput of at least 100 tons per hour at 1% loss can be delivered with just 700 horsepower. The brand new John Deere 13.6 litre engine is not only 10% lighter, it also generates more power and an increase of 30%. 30% on torque plus a 20% better fuel economy. The Prodrive XL transmission delivers 30% more torque to handle larger loads, all while providing smooth seamless speed control. The Harvest Motion concept provides a highly efficient driveline concept with very low RPM during operation of just 1900 RPM. Less gearbox boxes and larger diameter pulleys have been used wherever possible. These are more efficient and don't increase the combine's overall weight. Other innovations like the XL chopper knives on the chopper featuring a dimpled surface dramatically reduce air resistance and the self sharpening effect of the knife design maximizes chopping efficiency. Further power savings were made with the engine cooling package. The large diameter fan with a variable pitch blade delivers high airflow at lower power. Together all these efficiency improvements plus our Harvest Motion concept add up to massive power savings.
