Weston Muzomba farms in Zambia and uses John Deere equipment to grow crops despite challenges with market prices and input costs. He plans to expand his operation and start growing seed maize and wheat with irrigation.
My name is Weston Muzomba. This place is called Jekalengesh. Fami is my talent, is my passion, and even I am helping my family to go to school and myself to live better. So I have farming here for five years. I saw the big land here. That's why I decided to come here in Tazarakoridu. Both this farm I started growing eggs and soybeans. I started about 20 hectares. Then this year I planted maize 76, then soybeans 120 hectares, and tomato 2 hectares. If you grow maize, you are growing maize, you buy fertilizers at a big price. Then coming at selling point, you are selling at a down price. The price is low. So you can't manage to buy a fertilizer again because the market is not good. You come again to the chemicals, you buy chemicals at a big price, but you come to market for that crop which you are using, that chemical, the price is down. So that's a main challenge which is here at Ninzande. I got tractor, planter and a liper and it gave me a chance to pay back the improvement which I gave me. Maybe four or five years, then I finished. If I want to go and get another one, it gave me a chance to come and get another one. My wife and I have five children. My wife works together with me and my family works together with me. I am training them to come and help me. I chose John J. Tractor because I worked with John J. I don't have any problem with John J. I have the first one tractor, I have now eight years, no problem. I want to expand my farm. I want to start growing seed maize. I want to start growing wheat irrigation. So I want to start growing twice on land season and on dry season. I look forward to partnership with John J. Finansho and Afgre. I want to start growing seed maize.
