This is a YouTube video titled "John Deere Lawn Legends: Lawn Tips Lawn Soil Health (New Zealand)" featuring Peter Harfield from Scotch College in Adelaide. The content is an instructional talk about lawn care, specifically focusing on assessing soil health by examining soil moisture and root conditions to maintain a healthy lawn.
Hi, I'm Peter Harfield. My team and I are responsible for looking after the school grounds here at Scotch College in Adelaide. The key to a healthy lawn actually lies beneath the surface. We don't have X ray vision, so the only way to check and see how your soil is performing is to take a look underground. All you need is a spade. Dig a hole in the shape of a square. It only has to be 100 to 150 millimetres deep. Once you have your sample straight away, you can see the moisture level of that soil. You can also check to see what the roots are doing. Are they chasing that water down through the profile? Ideally, you'd like your soil to look like a slice of chocolate cake. If your soil is looking more like a rainbow layer cake and a little bit dry, you may need to apply wetting agents and aerate the soil. This will help the water penetrate the root zone. This is just one tip to keep your lawn legendary.
