John Deere Mower Checkpoints for Spring

Gene from SunSouth walks through the essential maintenance checks before you start mowing in spring: oil, air filters, fuel filter, battery, tire pressure, blades, deck cleanliness, belt condition, and fuel type.
Hi, I'm Gene from SunSouth. Today we're going to go over getting your mower ready for spring mowing season. I'm going to go over a couple of things you need to check before you start mowing for the season. First thing we're going to check, we're going to check the oil. Obviously we have a new mower, but we're giving you a demonstration. Make sure it's at the full mark. And this one is, we'll wipe it off and we'll check it one more time just to make sure. And it's right on the mark. Next thing you're going to want to check, you're going to want to check your air filters. Obviously, like I said, this is a new mower. You remove your cover, make sure your air filter is clean, no debris inside the air filter housing. Then we're going to come around to the side. Obviously you want to check your fuel filter, make sure it's not clogged. Also, you'll also want to check your battery just because it's been sitting all season. Make sure there's no corrosion, obviously. All right, Next thing we're going to check, you want to make sure your tire pressure is right because that obviously affects your mowing. You'll check your tire pressure in your rear tires and in your front tires. We're going to raise them more up. Now that we've got the machine raised up, you want to check your blades, make sure they're not worn. Make sure that they somewhat turn freely with no play. We've loosened this blade and I'm going to show you the difference in a new blade compared to an old blade. And a lot of the problem people have is if they say it doesn't cut right and it's normally it's the blade that's the problem, not the actual mower. So what I've done is I've got a new blade. Obviously these are not the same blades, but to give you an idea of how this blade is wore off and the customer brought it in, said it wasn't cutting properly and it was due to faulty blades. We're going to put this blade back on. And also you want to check, make sure there's no built up of grass and debris underneath your deck. Of course, this is a new mower, it's not going to have it. But that can also affect the cut quality of your machine and it adds extra weight to your deck. So just make sure that it's all clean underneath. Next thing we want to talk about is the top of your deck. You want to try to keep the top of your deck as clean as possible so that the debris around your spindles will cause your spindles to get hot and they'll wear prematurely because they can't cool down. You also want to check and make sure that your belt's riding in your pulleys correctly. And also you need to make sure you grease them. And on this one, the grease fitting is down under the bottom right there by the tip of my finger. And another thing you're going to want to check is you're going to want to check your belt real close, make sure it doesn't have any cracks or chunks missing out. You also want to check and make sure that it's traveling true, which means it's not a pulley out of adjustment. Like I said, this is a new machine, so it's in good shape. All right. In closing, I wanted to also mention your fuel. If it's all possible, you really need to try to run non ethanol fuel. Now, at John Deere, we do offer fuel protectant, and when we we try to install that in any fuel tanks. I thank y' all for today. My name Is gene with SunSouth. Just remember SunSouth when you're ready to have your mower service for the spring.
