A John Deere engineer in Tampere talks about testing engines for forestry machines. The work means balancing strict emission rules with what customers actually need from their equipment, all while pushing engine performance to its limits.
Old motorcycles, for instance. I've been always keen on them, especially engines. All engines. I repair and tool them by myself on everyday work. These new engines, new high tech engines, meeting the latest regulations, they tend to have a lot of new features in them which really excites me. We have an engine and powertrain test team. We do all kind of testing related to engine and powertrain as far as I know. Our facility here in Tampere, that's a unique facility for this kind of operation. I think the one major thing has been that we want to make sure that vehicle and also engine and those two together are actually working and behaving in such a way in real life that I exceed the customer expectations. Working conditions for forestry machines are such a unique. So the engine is seeing a lot of load variation coming from the hydraulic system. Load is changing, changing from low load to high load levels all the time. We just need to make sure that the engine and the vehicle itself is performing at excellent level and also having lower fuel consumption. The customers feedback is really important for us because that's the feedback we'll be using when we are testing the new products here in Tampere. We want to make sure that it's. It's behaving like the customers are requiring. I think the most rewarding thing, what I can get is that after we have accomplished all the testing for one prototype here in test cells, we get a feedback from the field that the machine is behaving excellent for the future. Of course I like to work with the engines. Of course I'm pretty sure that they will still evolve some way. The emission regulations are still getting tighter and tighter, so I want to be part of that journey.
