Part 6: Adjusting to Rapidly Changing Ground Conditions

Two speakers show how to adjust ECO off engine speed on a tractor so it responds better when moving between light and tough ground. They explain what poor response looks like, how to set custom speeds, and when to use the ECO button for fuel efficiency.
Do you find your tractor is not responding quite fast enough when encountering rapidly changing ground conditions? Well, after watching this video, you'll be able to adjust the ECO off engine speed to improve tractor response when rapidly going from light to tough ground conditions. You will also be able to choose efficiency in light conditions and performance in tough conditions using the ECO button.
Some symptoms that you might be experiencing with this sort of problem would be the tractor shifts up and throttles back in light areas of the field. The tractor can't shift down and throttle up fast enough when quickly encountering tough spots. Or the tractor might appear to be low on power, or the engine is lugged down too far and cannot recover, or in extreme cases, the transmission defaults to neutral. You can see this particular tractor can't shift down and throttle up fast enough when the load rapidly increases, resulting in the engine being lugged down too far. To remedy this problem, we need to switch to custom mode. We will set our ECO on engine speed to 1200rpm, which is equal to the ECO setting in full auto. I will set the ECO off engine speed to 1250 RPM, which is just a little higher than full auto. This is our starting point, and we will be adjusting up from there if needed. I'm not concerned about droop in this scenario because the tractor is not operating at full load, but I do want load anticipation on for headland turns.
Increasing the ECO off engine speed helps the engine recover faster in these rapidly changing conditions. If the tractor is still not recovering fast enough when going from light loads to heavy loads, I will keep increasing Eco off 50 RPM at a time until the recovery is acceptable. The goal is to increase the ECO off engine speed just enough to improve the engine recovery, but not more than necessary because that will increase our fuel consumption.
I had to increase the ECO engine speed to 1500 rpm on this tractor. With that said, I can use the ECO button on the throttle to select ECO on to operate at approximately 1200 RPM in light areas of the field. When I see that I am approaching that tough spot again, I can simply push the ECO button to select the higher ECO off engine speed to improve the tractor response as I encounter the tough spot.
By making these adjustments and using the ECO button, you get the best of both worlds. You can shift up and throttle back to a low engine speed when possible, but have the ability with the push of one button to take on the tough spots in the field.
