How John Deere's active exhaust regeneration system works and what operators need to know to keep it running right. The video covers operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting for emissions compliance.
We're here today to talk about regen systems on tractors. These systems are put in place to meet a government requirement that mandates the emissions levels that can come out of a tractor with a diesel engine. Regen stands for active exhaust regeneration. Basically what it is in layman's terms is a filter in the exhaust of the tractor that catches soot particles and then as the soot particles build up in that filter, then the tractor goes into regeneration mode and burns them out. It's a system that works very well on our tractors. On John Deere tractors, it's completely automatic. You don't ever have to do anything. And there are a few things that you can do to make it a little easier and to make it trouble free for yourself and for your tractor. One thing that you can do. Tractors with regen systems like to run at a little higher RPMs, so maybe choose a little lower gear, don't lug the tractor down, and it will regen much less often. These tractors are also made to be efficient at high RPMs anyways, so that's going to be your tractors and most efficient point is at the PTO rpm stop temperature. Outside is going to make a difference too. The hotter it is outside, the less often it's going to regen. So if it's cold outside, you're doing a lot of low RPM loader work, your tractor may need to regen a little more often. The first thing we want to look at, there's a switch up here on the dash that controls the regen system. It's got three positions. Down is off, the regen system is off. It cannot regen. If you leave the tractor in the down mode, it will not regen. Eventually the exhaust filter will plug up. It will mean a service call. The only time you use the down button, the off regen, is if you're working in a tight area, maybe inside of a building, where the tractor cannot regen because of the conditions. The exhaust does get hot when the tractor regens, so you may use that most of the time though you will not. The center position is automatic. The regen system is going to do its own thing when it needs to do it. The top button is going to put it into a parked regen or a service regen. If you need to do that, call us, we'll walk you through it. It's in the manual, but we'll be glad to help you through it. If you run into a situation where you need to do a parked regen, leave the tractor on automatic with the button in the middle, it will do its own thing. When it goes into a regen, you'll see a couple lights come on on the dash. The exhaust will get a little hotter. The only thing you want to remember is leave the tractor on. Keep the RPMs up, you can keep on working. The harder you work it, the faster it will regen. You don't need to change anything about the operation of the tractor, except do not idle it down. On the other side of this tractor we have a st explains the regen process. Okay, we have a sticker here, right by the operator station on the tractor, right by where you climb up on it. This is going to be at different places on different tractors, on cab tractors. We'll put it on the window. So your tractor, if you bought it from us and has a regen system, it probably has this sticker on it somewhere. It's going to have a row that shows the lights, the description, and then what you need to do. So we'll just walk through these quickly. The first one, exhaust filter indicator. It means that the exhaust filter requires cleaning. It needs to go through an active regeneration process. Process. It's just telling you it's fixing to happen. You don't need to do anything. We go to the second one. We see this high exhaust temperature indicator. It's going through a regen now and it's hot. It's just warning you that the exhaust is hot because it's going through a regen. Those two lights are normal. You will see those. The first one come on and then the second. In normal operation of the tractor, you do not need to do anything. You just need to keep the engine RPMs above 1200 RPMs. Don't shut the tractor off unless you need to. The third one here is telling you that it's plugged up and it needs a parked exhaust filter cleaning. That will usually happen because maybe you had the switch off or maybe something's wrong with this, with the system. We don't see that one very often, but it does happen. If you see that, that one, call us. If you get down to the stoplight, that means that this other one has been on for a while already. Now, the exhaust filter cleaning is going to have to be done by the service department. So you need to call us. If you see that light on the bottom one says that the exhaust filter cleaning is dis. That means that you've hit the switch, the rocker switch on the other side that we talked about before and you've turned it off. Maybe you bumped it accidentally. Maybe a child was on the tractor and bumped it. You need to get that switch back to the middle so that the tractor regeneration system can do its thing like it's supposed to do. This is a system that's worked out very well for us. John Deere has been putting it on tractors for a long time. They had to put it on the big tractors that they built for a long time ago before they had to put it on the smaller tractors. So the bugs have been worked out of it. It's working very well. If you have any questions about it, make sure you give us a call. There's a lot of misinformation out there. Some people are saying we have to change these filters really often. I don't know, but we've sold a lot of these tractors and my store has never had to change one yet. So give us a call. We've got 21 stores across the Southeast and we've got a tractor that fits your needs.
