I was born in 1932 and I think by the time that I was six year old I was able to swing a pony hook and ring bark a tree. Two sons, as they grew older, a bit like me, the time they could work or they were put to work either swinging an axe or burning some logs or doing something, we finally got the place cleared up to where we are today.
I like to call myself a farmer because I take pride and joy in what I been my livelihood ever since leaving school. I did do a trade and come back on the land. It's been very rewarding, especially the challenges, especially the weather in these later days. But we seem to be able to make it most years and proud of what we produce. Like a lot of things gets in your system. It's one of those things that you never seem to leave behind. No matter where you are or what you're doing. You're always thinking about how can I improve? What can I do to lift my bottom line? Our family like to think we're fairly productive because we're diversified in many aspects of farming. We grow just about all the winter cereals. Summertime, we grow summer crops. We do have sheep and cattle and also we run a contracting program for haymaking and a bit of spraying, carding, that sort of thing, which helps our bot. Australian farmers are unique because we stand alone. We don't have the subsidies a lot of other countries have. We've got to make it on our own. Overseas I helped a lot, but Australian farmers, we over the years just had to improvise and do the best they can to stay alive and it makes us unique. We like to run John Deere equipment mainly because of the reliability and the durability of the machinery. The John Deere round baler that we have at the moment is the current North American model. We like to run John Deere balers because after looking at the opposition we found that they have the less moving parts which saves on downtime wear and tear and they're virtually fail safe. We get a very good run out of the balers, doing up to 40,000 bales per machine and extremely happy with their production.
We've been fairly successful I think over the years in our farming methods and what we've done in the area. The days we spend big long days in the padd, but I enjoy every hour of it and I'm nearly 82 now and I still want to be out there. We are Aussie farmers and these are.
The colours of our land.
