Sami Pulkinen from Metzakore U Pulkinen walks through how Timber Manager tracks logging sites in real time, optimizing harvesting and transportation logistics. The system improves efficiency and communication across forestry operations.
I'm Sami Pulkinen from the Metzakore U Pulkinen company. We mainly perform final fellings. The average site is a clear cutting of 600 meters cubed. The current machine fleet consists of four machine chains. Timber Manager is really easy to use. The status of the logging site can be seen in real time from a single display. The cubic meter volume of logs is illustrated as a bar graph or in numbers. The display is really straightforward. It is also really easy to find out the machine's hourly production volumes and fuel consumption. I review this data later during a typical workday. I'm looking at the real time status of the logging sites. Efficiency increases when you eliminate the unnecessary work phases. For example, when the evening shift operator has removed the logs from the site and and forwarded them to the storage area the operator of the next shift doesn't have to worry about the status. Productivity automatically increases. We used to draw out the logging site situation on maps. It wasn't a great system, of course. It had information too. But it was really just a rough estimate. With Timbermatic maps now the operator can forward exactly 60 cubic meters of logs. We we have tested it and it works. I can be in the office and use Timber Manager to plan out the logging truck pickups because it shows me which site truly has a truckload ready. This reduces under capacity driving. The accuracy of the application is better than the best estimate. When forwarder operators update the cubic meters of logs forwarded to the storage area I can easily see the situation from Timber Manager on my tablet. This facilitates the moving of the machines. Right now, for instance, we are transporting plywood logs. I can see the situation and can inform logistics to send more trucks. This particular logging site has a cramped storage area and not many types of timber can be forwarded simultaneously. In fact, the aim is to get the logs out of the storage area where when there is a sufficient volume of logs in the pile. Timber Manager improves the efficiency of log transporting. And Timbermatic maps makes it possible to easily locate the correct logs. For instance, harvester operators have really embraced the system. They've noticed that it's useful in forwarder work and in the onward transportation of logs. Harvester operators can also mark mark the map with turning areas and problem areas on logging routes. And you can trust these markings. Timber is transported from another logging site to a ship. Some of the logs are floated. Our logistics chain also includes our own ship. The ship's load capacity is 1,000 cubic meters of timber. And the use of Timber Manager makes it much easier to know when there is this volume of timber in the pile. I can dispatch trucks to transport the logs to the pier, and I know when to send the ship to pick them up at the right time. This optimizes the use of the ship. Harvester operators have also said that the system facilitates communication with the forwarder operator. There is no longer any need to explain and to remember which type of timber is located where. And the system doesn't require any actions from the harvester operator. He harvests just like before. Forwarder operators, meanwhile, have praised how easy it is to continue work after the previous shift. And if I request a certain type of timber, I don't have to think about where it is located because I can see it on the map. So I feel confident in promising a delivery. Ease of use the system is surprisingly easy to use. A couple of hours of training, nothing more. Hui Lei just headed out to a logging site. While he's on his way, he will check the situation at the stand. You can do everything while driving since the display is right in front of you. The first time I tried the Timbermatic maps application, I immediately noticed how easy and simple it was. Anyone can learn to use it.
