Tips & Tactics: Different types of compost

Hi, I'm J.D. with Widothan Nurseries. Gonna talk to you a little bit about some of our bulk soils that we have. We have them year round, but this early in the spring, we're in March right now, is when we sell the most of it. We usually carry three kinds. We carry what's directly behind me. We call it raised garden soil. Have a lot of people doing raised gardens for vegetables, fruit trees, that kind of thing. It's a mix of bark and compost, peat and sand, which gives it all the good stuff you need for the garden to make it grow well. But you've got that sand and bark in there too, which doesn't make it too heavy. And the plants just don't stay wet all the time. So that's what we have if you're doing a raised garden. The other thing we have we sell the most of is compost. We've had mushroom compost before. That's gotten a lot harder to get. So now we have cow Compost doesn't smell like you would think compost would smell it. It smells clean, smells like soil, and has been through a heat where it's not going to burn your plants. But the compost is typically something you're not planting a plant or something directly in. You're using the compost to add to an existing bed. So if you made a raised garden bed a year or two ago and you need some more soil for it, you maybe wouldn't get more raised garden soil. You would get compost and add to that, to what's existing because it's a lot richer, got a lot more nitrogen and that kind of thing to help your plants grow. And it's also good for if you're planting a new tree, a new shrub, a new rose, putting a scoop full of that in the hole with it helps keep the moisture in there and helps keep the plant healthy and happy. But that's the two main kinds of bulk products we're selling right now.
