This is a YouTube video titled "Tips & Tactics: Mulch & Fertilizer" containing a gardening advice talk recorded in October 2022. The speaker discusses the use of mulch, particularly pine straw common in Dothan, Alabama, and fertilizing practices for trees and shrubs, emphasizing a single fertilizer product that lasts a year. The content is instructional and focused on gardening tips.
In the summertime, you want to remember your mulch as well. When people hear the word mulch, they usually think, you know, the bags of red mulch, brown mulch, black mulch. And in our area, most people, a lot of people use that, but 90% of the people are using pine straw. That's just the way it is in Dothan, Alabama. That's fine. It's beautiful. That not only helps with keeping weeds down and not only makes it look pretty, which is why most people get it, because it looks pretty, but it also helps hold the moisture in the plant when you water it. You don't have to water as often, that kind of thing. Another thing I get asked too is when do I fertilize? Do I need to fertilize in the summer? Well, if you are a well educated customer. At Dothan Nurseries, we try to. There's a lot of different fertilizers and you have to look at the release time. Does it release for one month or two months or three months or six months or a year? And I don't like having 10 different fertilizers here with 10 different releases. So we have one fertilizer for all the trees and shrubs, the roses, hydrangeas, boxwoods, lorops, Japanese maples, citrus trees, fruit trees. And we put it out one time a year and it lasts for an entire year. So you can fertilize any time of year with this stuff, and it'll last for the whole year. But if you just have a bag of fertilizer, some people like to use Triple 13, that kind of thing. You can definitely fertilize this time of year when it's warm, just make sure you water it in really well.
