This is a YouTube video titled "Tips & Tactics: Types of Soil" containing a monologue by JD from Dothan Nursery recorded in October 2022. JD explains different types of bulk soils available for gardening and landscaping, including mushroom compost, garden soil, and topsoil, and provides practical advice on how to use them effectively for planting and soil enrichment.
JD At Dothan Nursery is going to talk to you a little bit about the bulk soils we have. Probably one we sell the most of is this one right here. This is mushroom compost, and they call it mushroom compost because it's the soil they grow mushrooms in. Once they're done with it, they get rid of it, sell it to us. And this is what we. You don't ever want to use mushroom compost to do like a raised garden bed for vegetables and just plant plants directly in that. This is to mix into the existing soil. So if you're planting a rose, put a scoop up the hole with the rows. If you've got a big bed in front of your house, a garden bed's fine. But you would want to put this out there a couple of three inches until it in to mix it into existing soil to kind of enrich the existing soil. If you're doing a raised garden, we sell a lot of this garden soil to do raised gardens. It's got the compost in there, but it's also. It's got bark, it's got sand, which helps the roots breathe, help them grow. And it's not. This compost will get a little bit thick and muddy sometime because there's no sand or anything else with it. It's just thick, thick soil. And then the other one we have back there is topsoil that's a mixture of compost and sand. A lot of people like that. If they have some kind of bare spots in their sod out in their front yard, they'll put that out there. I've got some people that really like that for their raised gardens as well. Just because it's mostly compost, it does have some sand in it and there's a bunch of nitrogen. It really helps those plants grow. But the bulk of what you need for your yard, if you're ever doing a landscape project in your yard, you're going to plan 20, 30 shrubs and a couple of trees or whatever, get a scoop of mushroom compost, put it in the back of the truck, and then everything you plant, you put a scoop or two of that mushroom compost in there with it, and it'll help hold that moisture and gives it a bunch of nitrogen as well to help it help it grow well.
