This is a YouTube video titled "Zona de Colheita p/ Colhedora de Algodão" containing an instructional explanation about the cotton picking process, specifically describing the function and mechanics of the spindle component used to pick cotton fibers from plants. The content is technical and educational, focusing on agricultural machinery operation.
With the crop now gathered and compressed, it is time for step three, picking. To pick the cotton fiber away from the plant, we use a component called a spindle. A spindle is a tapered rod made of very hard steel. Sharp barbs are machined onto the tapered end to pick the cotton from the plant. The spindle assemblies are mounted to picking bars. Bars assemblies with spindles mount onto rotating drums. There are two drums in each row unit. The barbs of the spindles reach through the grid bars into the compressed cotton. The spindles literally pick the cotton fiber from the bolls on the cotton plant. The gathering and compression process is important to picking because cotton outside the picking zone will not be picked. The largest percentage of cotton is picked by the front drum. Any cotton missed by the front drum passes through the row unit to the rear drum assembly and is picked by the rear drum spindles. It is important to remember to adjust and maintain the components on both the front and rear of the picking units for optimal performance.
