Runners get hurt from repeating the same movement pattern on roads and tracks. Trail running forces varied, more athletic movements that reduce injury risk. During power-hiking, rotate your shoulder orientation to give muscles a break from overuse.

I think we get hurt because we lock in the same movement pattern over and over and over again. But where do we go for our easy runs? We go onto a dirt road usually, and you have the same movement pattern. The trails with the rocks, and it makes you more athletic and balanced. So I find that like people won't get hurt as much running out in the mountains, but then you put them on track or road and like the likelihood of injury goes way up because the movement isn't as athletic. Again, muscles get tired when they get used the same way over and over again. So even like if I'm doing like power hiking, I might even just like face my shoulders one way for a while and then face them the other way just to give my muscles just a little bit of break and then you'll feel better when you go back to it, you know? But I think trails really do balance things out for like those high-level road runners and track runners.
