Flow Dreaming. It's a show where we talk about the power of your mind to change your world around you, to literally affect the fabric of your reality. We talk about this feeling of hope and joy and relief. And that is what being aware of your flow does. It gives you a feeling of power again in your lives. And that is what being aware of your flow does. It gives you a feeling of power again in your lives. Breathe. It is the feeling that you bring forward. It is your emotional connection that really sets the tone for what is going to be happening to you and for you. And you know that feeling when you touch it, it just spreads through you. I'm Summer McStravik, and welcome to another episode of Flow Dreaming. Hi, it's Summer. And a quick request before we jump into the show, if you like or even love what you're about to the number one reason this show has gotten around and stays in the favorites in itunes and the app Store, it's because of your reviews. And we are in our 11th straight year because of you and your reviews. People rely on your opinion and frankly, they often misunderstand Flow Dreaming. And the only way to correct that is through you leaving a few words about the program. And I can't do it. I would if I could, but it has to be you. So if I've made any impact on your life at all, please support scoot over to itunes on your podcast app and either subscribe to Flow Dreaming or write a review of the show or the app or both. And mega kisses for doing both. I'll send some good flow your way too. So pause the episode and do it now or just get onto the show. Welcome to Flow Dreaming. Hi everyone, it's Summer. We're talking today about the purity of practice. What does that mean? Right? Oh my God. I have to do that Flow Dreaming thing. Oh, does that mean I have to start going to the gym too? And actually sticking to my diet? And actually, yes, it does and no, it doesn't. I thought it would be fun for us to explore the concept of why it is that the things we want to do the most, we often do the least. It's something I hear from my clients and students all the time. I always seem to get the things done that have to be done, but the things that are for me, for myself, my practice, you know, my daily meditation or my daily self care, it never gets done. How come? So we're gonna look at that today from the perspective of Flow and come up with some, I think, interesting answers I hope will be Useful to you so that you can start to establish not just a flow drumming practice, but any other kind of ritual or morning practice or self care that's been on your list for a while. All right, so let's look at the question of why am I not doing my practice daily? Specifically why am I not flow dreaming daily and what is a good practice? How often should I use self care, Should I meditate, should I get to yoga, should I, etc. Etc. What can be part of this practice that I do for myself and how do I get myself to do it? All right, if you think about a daily practice and I know we've all started them, you've started them, I've started them. I have lists still stuck on post its to my computer right now telling me the three or four things that I'm supposed to be doing every day as part of my commitment to take care of myself. I recognize that having a daily commitment like that means that your life has to be pretty structured. It means that kids, husbands, partners, parents, friends, everybody who wants to kind of come in and disrupt or change alter your day, hey, can you carpool? Can you? And like no, I've got my daily practice. If we have filled up lives, particularly that involve other people, staying on a regimented schedule is very hard. And I know that sounds like a blatant lack statement, but I've discovered it's pretty hard because it means that I have to say no, no, no, no, no. And to a degree I do that, right? I say no, that's during my, you know, my gym practice and I have to go. I mean I have to be there. So let's schedule it around that. But to do something every day to allocate that time for yourself every day, even days when you wake up late because you were out late the night before and you do this little calculation in your head, you know, I think I really need the extra hours sleep or I felt like I was coming down with the sniffles last night. I better skip it. My point is that our lives are always factoring in different flows of information. So right off the top here, I guess what I'm trying to say is I want you to give yourself a little bit of, a little bit of an out. I'm giving you permission. You can have a bit of an out. We're going to look at practice instead as not something that's regimented, but something that becomes a free flowing part of the fabric of your life. It's a different way of thinking. It's part of the free flowing fabric of of my life. I may not have my practice every morning from 8 to 9am but I might be getting my acupuncture done. My massage therapist may be showing up. I may be going into flow three or four times. I may be stopping off and getting some green juices or blending them up in my my own kitchen. My practice is woven into my time, it's woven into my lifestyle. And I weave it in in such a way that if I'm think thinking about the next thing I need to do, I'm thinking also about my self care. My mental, emotional, spiritual and physical self care. So let's look at how most of us, since we were talking about how most of us are kind of coming off or weaning ourselves off of the regimented model and why that model can be really difficult. If you think about most things in your life that you do consistently, they've got two things built into them. They've got an accountability piece and a payoff piece. And if you don't like accountability, we can call it punishment. They got a punishment and a payoff. I prefer accountability though, so I'm going to try to use that word. For instance, we all eat every day. We eat. Who forgets to eat? Nobody. You know why? Because if you don't eat, you get hungry and fainty and cranky and eventually you collapse. That's the accountability piece. That's the punishment piece. What's the payoff for eating? You get energy, you get to not think about it for another couple of hours. You get to attend to other things if you eat. What about something simple? We do every day. We put our clothes on in the morning. At least most of us, right, Naturists, you guys are accepted, but we put our clothes on. And why? Again, if we don't, we'd be socially shunned, we'd be laughed at, we'd be, you know, shot out of town. What's the payoff? Well, sometimes we feel like I look good, I'm socially accepted, I'm putting on a good face and making myself feel good about myself. How about getting your kids to school? We all manage to do that every day too. If you don't get your kids to school, they call you from the office, they harass you, there's punishment, accountability built in. Payoff. Your kids get smarter, they get socialized, you're able to go to work and have your own life as well. About going to work, most of us do that too. You don't go to work, you get fired, you do go to work, you get paid. You see how it works. Almost everything that we do, fundamentally, all day, sleep, taking a shower, all of it, it's a weighing, there's an accountability and then there's a payoff piece. And as long as both of those are present, there's a really high chance, sometimes 100% chance we're going to get to it. Like sleep, very rarely. I haven't pulled an all nighter in 20 years because I know what the payoff is and I know what the punishment is if I stay up all night long. So this is how we construct the majority of our day. If you just like step back a second and you look 95% maybe of what you do has both of those things pushing you to do them. But you've got this other area, this gray area, the area of things that we want to do but we don't have to do. What are those things? Oh, this is usually where all of our self care falls. Right. These are the things that we would like to get to. I want to take that 30 minute walk in the daytime. I want to clean out the closet that's been overdue being cleaned for like six months. I want to. And you can, you can, you have a whole. We all have lists of these. These are the things that tend, strangely enough, to make us feel a little bad about ourselves. Isn't that funny? We're always walking around telling Flo, we've got a whole list of things that are good for us that we don't do. So we actually make them feel bad for us, which is totally the opposite of what we want. Yet we do this. Why? Well, we look at then the third category. I'll get back to that second category. We look back to the third category. The things that somehow we end up doing even though we did not want to do them necessarily. I know I should clean out the closet, but instead I found myself watching tv. I know I should be reading that really good book in bed and getting caught up on something, but instead I'm, you know, watching some terrible reality show. What's going on? How come we end up doing things we actually don't want to do and then we feel really guilty about them? I call those things your leisure category. Right. The definition of leisure is really just pleasure and release. Leisure means I do it when I want to do it, I do it when I want to do it, I don't have to do it. There is no punishment involved. If I don't watch that crappy television, there's no Punishment, nothing's gonna happen to me. Isn't that strange? If there's no punishment, if we don't do it, we consider that something that's leisure odd. Does that mean that all the most important things in our life have to have accountability tied to them? This brings us back to the middle category again, right? Take something like you're flow dreaming. If you do it, it's pleasure and if you don't do it, it's kind of like watching tv. There's no immediate punishment. There's often no relevant visible accountability piece. The same is true for your meditation practice, the 30 minute walk around the neighborhood, your meditation, chatting on the phone. You can go through a list of everything you do in a day and you can see, right, some phone calls. There is an accountability piece. If your mom calls and you don't call her back, she's going to be irritated. I know because my mom is. She called me yesterday. Why haven't you talked to me, right? So that becomes something that I'm now more likely to do. The payoff is I love my mom, I love talking with her. So you need to take all of these things that are in the blurry middle zone. They're not quite pleasure, but they're not something that have an immediate accountability piece connected to them. You need to find all of those things. Usually that's where our self care lays or lies. Usually you have to go ahead and add your own accountability into it. So flow dreaming truly does have an accountability piece built into it. When you're not in flow, you notice your life gradually kind of starts to get off track and you end up going in directions you don't want to do, looking at options, none of which feel right or seem to fit you. Things are getting hung up, stopped, stuck, you're starting to get harassed, people are not being nice to you, things aren't happening or going your way. You know the picture, yet it's not immediate, right? It's like, it's like getting slightly off alignment. At first you're not that far off and it's okay, you can handle it. But the longer you stay out of alignment, it's like veering off the highway, the farther you get from the main straight road. And it's only when things get really bumpy and difficult that you go, ah, I found the accountability, I found the punishment piece. Took me two weeks, two months, two years, but there it is. I get it, I see it. The same is true when you know, we're not exercising, we're not eating right, put On a few ounces, put on a few pounds, put on a few more pounds. One day you look down and say, oh my goodness, where did this extra 10 or 15 come from? Well, they've been building. You just didn't see them because you didn't have a daily piece of accountability. So why do we resist that? So you're like, okay, so Summer, yeah, I know, I gotta get some accountability into my program. How do I do that? And then how come I'm not doing that? Well, what do we usually do with accountability? We resist it, Right? We resist it. Don't tell me what to do. I don't wanna do it when I don't wanna do it. So if I say, make yourself accountable to it, you say, no, I don't want to. You can't tell me, you can't make me do what I don't want to do. Even though I do want to do it, I don't want to be told I have to do it. And I don't want to have to tell myself I have to do it because then I have to be the bad guy to myself. Let's again reframe that. When you're creating accountability for yourself, you're remembering a couple things here. One, ideally, your self care and your flow dreaming. It's pleasurable, right? And that's why we sometimes kind of lump it into the category of watching tv. I'll just do it when I feel like it. It's pleasurable, there's no immediate consequence. It's my escape. It's what I do when I'm telling the world, don't tell me what to do. Which is often why we end up watching tv, because we're really just saying, I don't want to be any more accountable today. I need to blank out and zone out. But that's not truly where your self care practice lies. Truly your self care is in the middle category. And it's a pleasurable thing. It's an enjoyable thing. So it can feel a bit like just a hobby or something. That's not necessary. You want to make it feel necessary. You want to make it feel that if you don't do it, you would be shunned, you would be broke, you would be hungry, you would be sleepless. Without, of course, making any of those things be true. I achieve this through my own, you know, various means. For instance, I have accountability because I teach flow dreaming, because I have built it into my life, my work structure. I'm going to be in flow multiple times a day either for Myself or teaching, channeling information, guiding a student. That's part of my accountability. I will be in flow because I've made it be part of my livelihood, my life's purpose. I also find that I go into flow because if something negative has happened, something I don't like, I know I immediately have a tool to fix it. I have a way to feel better instantly. So I'm flow dreaming throughout my day because there's an immediate payoff. And the accountability part is, hey, if I, if something kind of yucky happens or crummy happens or I'm, I'm starting to worry about something, I can fix it. It'll get fixed if I just go in and do this and feel this. Ah. So in a way I'm using it to put an end to pain. When I'm using it to put an end to pain, it's kind of an accountability piece. There's no punishment, but I'm using it to end some other form of pain. So over the years I've kind of evolved this free floating system of using flow for myself. I use it with my decision making. I use it when I'm trying to escape or avoid some sort of pain, meaning something that doesn't feel good, a negative emotion, a negative expectation, lack that comes up in me. I'm using it if I need to address something in my life that needs some focus and guidance. Right, right there. I know if I don't do it, this thing will go out of alignment. Eek. And that's the pain that keeps me accountable. I flow dream because everybody who knows me and loves me expects me to do it. If I didn't do it, I would feel like a hypocrite. I would be a hypocrite. So you see, I've put together my own little collection of things that keep me motivated. Notice how I don't sound very exalted when I'm sharing these with you. I don't sound like I'm any woo, you know, great evolved being because a lot of these things that are making me do it have to do with how other people are perceiving me or the fact that I just don't want to deal with crummy stuff or very mundane, very human motivations. But it's the same human motivation that makes sure I'm going to have lunch because if I don't, I'm going to feel bad. That is fundamental, right? That's fundamental to you. So let's look at what we've covered so far. First of all, you don't need a regimented self care program unless you want one. But if you've been trying to get one and it hasn't worked and everyone has, you know, tried it, at least if it's not working, you can let it go. Instead, what you can say is, I will build my self care into the free floating fabric of my life. I may only do four or five pieces of it in a week and next week I'll do three and the week after that I'll do eight. And then I get a whole weekend of self care activities, things that are in my practice that may actually be what fits you. That's what fits me. Second, how do you get these things to stick and stay in your life? You build in accountability. Accountability and payoff. Ideally, if you can think of whatever you're trying to do and do and see, I mean really feel what you're getting and what you will not get if you don't do it, you're gonna do it now. Why? You know how in flow we're always talking about your emotional self? Well, when you're just putting together a program in your head, your brain, your mental self, your head self is saying, this sounds great, this is what you should do. I've got it all mapped out. I've got it all, you know, put together. And your emotional self says, ha ha, jerk face. I am not gonna do any of that because when I get home I'm tired and I want to watch TV and eat a cookie. Your emotional self always rules the roost, right? You guys are flow dreamers and you know that your emotional self is truly the queen. And the king is just like pretending he's the king. Queen rules. Sorry, but she does. So your self care has to appease directly to your emotion or appeal directly to your emotional self. And it can't just be, it feels good because that's tv. I'm using TV as an example. It's any of those silly things that we find ourselves sort of squandering our time and then we feel guilty about it. Why we're actually giving something to ourselves. By the way, when we do that kind of stuff, we're giving ourselves permission to not have accountability. You know, for a few hours in my day, I just don't want to have any accountability. I want to escape. And usually my escape is something mind numbing. Some of you it's knitting. Some of you it's a glass of wine. Some of you it's tv. Some of you it's reading junky magazines. Your self Care is not that though. Your self care is the middle ground, the emotionally connected middle ground woven in throughout your day. So let's get to the third idea here that I wanted to share in today's episode. What really is an ideal amount of self care or of flow dreaming to kind of weave into my life if that is in fact how it's going to happen. So I have a blog right at my website, flowdreaming.com I've got a couple of articles over there in the featured articles area. If you look on the sidebar, you'll see featured articles. I try and keep relevant articles there that talk about how to flow dream what it is, you know, how to use the MP3s, etc. That's the first thing I want to direct you to go there, right? Get some guidance on how I would construct kind of an ideal flow dreaming schedule. The second thing I'd suggest for you is I created playlists for the very reason of giving you some accountability and making it easy. When you invest in something, when you pay money for something, have you ever noticed the more you pay for something, the more you value it? You know, if you've ever bought like a $200 jacket, you value that. That thing is nothing squishing it in your closet, it's always getting hung up. But if you pay $15 for the jacket, it ends up on the floor by the chair, the cat sleeping on it. Oftentimes we connect money with accountability. So if you're starting to invest in something, invest in some playlists and then you're going to have that accountability piece. I paid for these, I ought to do them. That's one of the big reasons, frankly, that people join me school because they're paying for it. They make themselves show up. And then we reach back out from the other side. We reach toward you or toward them and say, and we're also pulling you in, we're also calling you, we're making sure you're okay. So it's not just you creating the accountability. It's now coming from both sides. It's highly effective. But let's get back to your Flow Dreaming program here for a second. There's a couple of programs that I want to recommend. One is called Daily Flow. It's a morning flow dream and it's an evening flow dream. And then there's a short one called Instant Alignment. Five minutes, okay? This is sort of like bookending your day. Good morning, great day. That's the morning one. Programming the day ahead. At night, before you go to sleep, you play the one that says, all right, let's program tomorrow, let's program my sleeping. Let's get myself into the right emotional state. And then instant alignment is, whoa, things are going out of whack. I've only got five minutes. I'll just listen to this really quick and get my emotional self back online again. It's a perfect combination. There's another one that I would recommend as well, Essential flow dreams. And what I've done is I've put together two playlists, Essential Flow dreams, which are best of. And then the expansion pack. Basically, I took what I felt were the top, most important, most fundamental things that you could do for yourself in terms of improving your life, your self care, your awareness, getting you aligned and on track. And I bundled them together and I said, these are essentials. If you only do five or six flow dreams in my entire library of 100 plus, do these five, do them. Use my guidance as your accountability. Don't use. Here's a. Don't try not to use your own inner pain all the time as what pushes you to become accountable. And I know that this is what many of us do because we go to the, we go to the flow dreaming store. I see it happen and people are trying to solve immediate problems, pain points. They're like, yeah, my relationship just like totally got messed up and now I need some relationship flow dreams pronto. You wait till you get in a place of pain and then you solve it, right? Because the pain has become the punishment, the accountability piece. You can do that. It's how many of us kind of get our self care and our personal growth started, right? I mean, how many of you guys started in personal growth because of something terrible happening in your life and you woke up and went, wow, there's ways to solve this and handle this that I wasn't taught. And growing up in my little community and family. Yeah, it turns out there is. There's a whole movement out there that's called personal growth. So go ahead and use some of those playlists proactively. Now, how often should you flow dream? Good question. I always say if you can do it once a day, you're doing amazing. Choose a time when you're already in a kind of daydreaming, you know, unhooked state. There'll be multiple times a day that when you know you're feeling like this, but a time when you're predictably that way. Some of you, it's, well, I sweep the kitchen every night after dinner. Put on your headphones then. Because I bet you if you're not flow dreaming, you're going to be thinking about all these other things. You'll be daydreaming, you'll be unhooking. Do it then. Do it in your evening shower. Do it on your daily morning walk. If you don't have a daily morning walk because you're adapting the new free floating schedule, do it every time you walk, no matter when that is. If you can do it once a day, that's brilliant. If you can do it a couple times a week, that's pretty good too. That's pretty good too. I would say once a week is the bare minimum. Once a week is. I'm sort of attending to this. I'm kind of there with it, but I'm not fully there with it because it's giving yourself too much time to get out of alignment in between. Too much time for your emotional set points to revert back to what they regularly are. All the lack thinking, etc. That's going on. Your idea with flow dreaming is to start to be in this state so much more often in such a powerful way that it's counterbalancing a lot of the negativity, the lack of self love, the lack thinking, the fear, the lack of trust, all of the stuff that normally is managing and guiding all of our. All of our expectations and interactions with the world. You want to be in flow more often than you're feeling, all of that. But I know that we can't because we'd have to spend about eight hours a day in flow then. So I look at flow dreaming as a kind of hyper or stronger, you know, like a strong dose. You know, it's like a medicine. You know, 15 minutes is worth 4 hours of. 15 minutes of flow dreaming is worth 4 hours of lack thinking. Kind of like that. So minimum several times a week. If you want more details. I know that's not the purpose of the show today, but go to the website and I can give you a more clear schedule for. If I get a playlist, how often do I listen to each one of these, etc. But this is the overall idea. You want to build in accountability and you want to build in pleasure. That's ideal. That's the middle ground. You want to make it fit into your life, flowing into the fabric of your being. So it's always there. Even if it comes in clumps and you have empty times and then there's more clumps again, that's fine, let it be that way. Most of us don't have breakfast precisely at 8, lunch precisely at 12, and dinner precisely at 5. But somehow we manage to get nutrients inside. That is where your practice needs to go into that same schematic. Just make it be in there somewhere. All right, that is a wrap on our monologue. What I want to do is go to a quick break and when we come back, we're going to do a brief flow to stimulate our practice, to help us integrate it, to help us integrate flow and any of our self care in our lives so we can stop beating ourselves up for not doing it right. Stay with me. Hey, it's summer again and we're on a break, but this is where I catch you up on a couple of things that can really help you go much deeper with Flow Dreaming. So, as I always say at the beginning of our flow dreams, for those of you who are listening to this show for the very first time. Flow dreaming is not meditation. It's not self hypnosis. It's its very own thing. And if you want to learn how to do it right, go to my website@flowdreaming.com and download the free kit that I make available. It's actually training that I've been giving out to teach you how to do this process. It's based on your emotion. It is a way of getting into what I call flow, which is a state of being, a state of energy in the universe. It's very effective. We use it to manifest and change, change anything and everything with that we want in our lives. So today's flow dream is going to be about establishing a practice, a gentle practice, letting yourself create something that flows and moves through your life, that gives to you, that feels pleasurable, yet has accountability built in, making sure that you say yes to it as often as possible. So close your eyes with me. Now take a deep breath all the way down to the bottom of your abdomen. And then as you release it, let those shoulders drop and let your jaw relax, squish up your face, tense it up and let the whole thing go. All the tension melting from your jaw and brow. And you find yourself moving into flow now. Moving into a space where you pretend you're behind the energy of the entire world. As if you could open up a door, secret door, and you go in behind, crossing it. And now you can see everything from the inside out. There's your life, there's your home. There are the people you love. You could turn in circles and see them all. And you can see yourself. There you are, waking up, brushing your teeth, getting dressed, checking your phone, your computer, having breakfast, whatever it is you do, going through your day. And you see that so much of what you're doing is just catalog. It's by rope. One function after another after another. And yet slipping on top of it all, like a. Like a school of silvery fishes. There's all these variables, all these other things that kind of fly in there for the day, for the moment, saying, handle me, take care of me. Can I be part of your life, your energy, just for these few moments, these few hours. And you've said yes, apparently, because here they are, all these silvery fishes. People, events, things. Phone calls, emails, what are they? And then you look to yourself. Oh, you realize there's something here, Something coming from me. Not coming from outside me, coming from inside me. It's like in my heart, there's one of Those crystal clear paperweights, the beautiful flower inside. But it's not made of glass. It's made of light. It's made of energy. And it can open. It can bloom. You feel your heart growing, opening, reaching outward. Bubbles of light, streams of color emanating from you out into your life. Your heart says, there's a few things I'd like to have as well. You know, I want to feel good. I want us to feel good. I want us to feel loved. I. I want to feel protected. I want to feel guided. I want to feel in flow. I want to feel excited. I want to feel passionate. I want to feel like I can long for things and know that I will, in fact, receive them. Will you give me some moments, Will you give me some space where we can go into this, where I can have this? And you say, oh, man. Oh, my God, yes, of course I'll give that to you. I give my body food and rest. I give my kids attention. I give my bosses my time. I'm gonna give something to you, to my heart. My heart says, give me vision, Give me hope. Give me clarity. Give me a feeling that I'm powerful. Let me guide you. Let's guide our life together, where you're going next. And you say, yes, that's critical. That's crucial, important. And your. Your flow. And your heart is saying, it is. It is, it is. And there's a whole lot of things that I want to call in around us to help us with this. Things that you love to do, things that are part of your practice, that speak to your heart. And you allow those things to also rise up in your mind, those things you love doing your writing or your meditation, your creativity, work, whatever it is. Let your heart gather all of those in and say this. This is important. This is vital. This helps me pump the blood of desire through you. Pump the blood of passion through your life, of focus, of feeling like it's all okay, we're heading in the right direction. Say, this is what my practice really is. Yes, this is what your practice really is. Flowing, allowing, saying yes to any little pockets of time that open up. Starting this very instant, you drop into your practice. You drop into these feelings, weaving it in. Ah, now it's time to do this. Now it's time for a little of that. Oh, this feels good. Gonna give it to me and you do. You give it to yourself. Starting right now. Your heart is so proud. It's so filled with joy. Thank you. It says, thank you. Oh, we're on track. We're on track. And now that I know we are, I give myself permission to come back. Return, returning out of flow. Coming to where you once again are in your regular daily waking reality and your flow dream is ended and you open your eyes. Welcome back. How did that feel? Pretty good, huh? Now you really know. Your practice is part of you. It's already there. It's already in your heart. Your heart knows what to do with it. Your flow knows what to do with it. You just have to nod and say yes whenever it pops up. Yes. Okay. You're right. Yes. I want you. I want that. All right. I hope that helps you. Until next time. I'll see you all again next week for another episode of Flow Dreaming. All right, that wraps up our episode today. But before you go, two things.
