29 Jan 2026 · 25 min
Summer McStravick explores why shifting between tasks and life states takes time, using ADHD and personal stories from vacations and first meetings. She offers practical tips like naming your desired feeling and giving yourself an emotional nudge, then guides a brief Flow Dream to practice the shift.

Flow Dreaming. It's a show where we talk about the power of your mind to change your world around you, to literally affect the fabric of your reality. We talk about this feeling of hope.
And joy and relief.
And that is what being aware of your flow does. It gives you a feeling of power again in your lives. And that is what being aware of your flow does. It gives you a feeling of power again in your lives. Breathe. It is the feeling that you bring forward. It is your emotional connection that really sets the tone for what is going to be happening to you and for you. And you know that feeling when you touch it, it just spreads through you. I'm Summer McStravik and welcome to another episode of Flow Dreaming. Hi, it's Summer and a quick request before we jump into the show. If you like this podcast, the number one reason Flow Dream has grown is because of your reviews. People rely on your opinion and frankly, they often misunderstand Flow Dreaming.
The only way to correct that is.
Through you leaving a few words about the program. So pop over to itunes or your podcast app and write a review. It means so much to me when you do. Now onto the show.
Welcome to Flow Dreaming and let's get the roll bowling. Today I want to talk shifting the energetics of shifting, the feel of what it's like when you are moving from one task to another and one energy state to another and how that relates to how you interact with life, how you interact with your future with flow, your own expectations about yourself. It's kind of an odd topic and.
One that we don't think about very much.
So welcome, welcome, welcome to Flow Dreaming. Sometimes we talk about manifesting and consciousness, law of attraction, creat. Sometimes we talk about your emotional self and healing. Above all, we talk about flow, this idea that there is a current in our lives, a current that carries us forward within it, that we are part of and that we can align to it and co create within it and really boost and enhance the quality of our life all the way around. So let's get back to this idea of shifting, shifting, shifting. I think this concept came to me when I was researching about adhd. My son has ADHD and it means that one of the things that's difficult for him is moving from task to task. You know, for us it's simple to say, go brush your teeth and get in bed. Yet in his mind, it's much more than that. It's stop what you're doing now and withdraw your focus. Put your focus on something else, namely brushing your teeth. Which requires walking into the bathroom. It requires getting the toothbrush out, actually brushing the teeth, then figuring out when to stop brushing the teeth, when they're complete, when it's time to move out of the bathroom into another room. Can you see what I'm getting at? When you break it down like that, there's quite a few tasks in there. So if you're at all delayed in being able to do a task, imagine that delay just magnified over and over and over and over. Something that would take you five minutes is now taking you 15 minutes or 20 minutes. Particularly if you become distracted as you move from task to task, you say, linger on one task a little longer than the others because that little timer inside of you isn't clicking the same as it might be for other people. So this got me kind of fascinated with, well, what happens when we have to move energetically. But let's say you don't have adhd, but you're moving energetically from one thing to another. And that's when it hit me. Oh, my God. I know where my son got it from. I don't know if I have adhd. I've never even looked into it. But I do know that something I do is become very focused in, extremely honed in to the task at hand, to the point where I drop awareness of just about anything else where I am. You know, I can be staring at a computer screen for two solid hours and not even realize that I haven't gotten up, I haven't moved, I haven't done anything. I'm that focused. I'm that in flow. So for me, it's generally been a gift in my life because if I need to really get something, something done, like people always said, how do you work from home, Summer? I mean, it's so distracting. I'm like, no, it's not. Working from home is ideal. I zero in on my tasks, and I just. I'm all there. I'm totally in flow with them. But, you know, for me, it's. It's. It's been a benefit, right, Being able to zero in like this to get deep into a task. However, the downside which just became clear to me is when it comes time to shift to another task, I get a delay. It's not there. There's nothing in my ear saying, or my executive function saying, time to change, time to change. And I notice this in a bigger way when it comes to bigger things in my life. And I'm sharing this with you because maybe you experience it too. And while Yes. I think some of it is biological and just how we are made. I do believe some of it is also emotional and energetic. And I think they're all tied together. Everything's tied together. Nothing is ever separated out. So, for instance, let's say you've probably had this experience.
I sure have.
It's time for vacation. Oh, my God. I've been waiting and waiting for my vacation. I finally leave, it's Friday evening, Starting the vacation, getting on the plane, doing whatever it is. My husband used to joke that the first three or four days of vacation with me was miserable, just miserable, because I was all over. Where are the suitcases? Are we get that the airport is like, I can't stand them. And I don't know if this hotel. I don't know. And I have to check my email. And he's like, would you just get.
Out of work mode?
And I'd say, I'm trying, damn it. Which is exactly how you do not want to sound on your first couple of days of vacation. But something would happen around day three or four. I would wake up and I would be in a different state. The transition time was three to four days for me to let go of.
One long kind of stream of energy.
That I had been in. Work, work, work, work, work, work, work. And you can kind of. It kind of makes a logical sense. The longer you're in a particular stream of energy, if you haven't had a vacation for a year, it's going to be harder for you to just sink or transition directly into that vacation state. There's this little time gap, this moment these days, where you are moving from one state of being to another state of being. And the joke was, it took me three or four days. I've really worked to shorten that up so that I can be much more pleasant from day one, because I have awareness of it now, for one thing. But nonetheless, it's there, and I know it's there. And it made me realize, gosh, I wonder. I wonder if this is happening in other areas of my life, too. And as I began to look around, I'd say, oh, it's there and it's there and it's there and it's there and it's there, right? I mean, anybody who's ever had a romantic approach, and you're all in work, focused mind, or you've just been fighting with your kids, you know, you're like, not now, honey. And it's not that it's, you don't want it right now, but you have to make that shift. There is an energy shift, an emotional shift that has to occur inside you. And we each, I believe, take a distinctive amount of time for that shift. Some of you are like, boom, I can switch on a dime. Yeah, I'm here, now, I'm there, now I've got this. I can move from thing to thing to thing. Some of us, it turns out, have a longer delay factor, or let's say transition factor than others. So I even know that. Let's say I experience this when I go to conferences in particular, or when I'm meeting someone new. First day at a conference, I feel awkward. I'm quiet, I sit in the back. And I always used to get down on myself. Gosh, Summer, this is just not like you. How come you're doing this? Why are you all tucked up in your chair in the back and, you know, just being pleasant but not really yourself? Well, I'm shifting into a new atmosphere. And if you are empathic, I think this also plays into it. One of the things that you do is you have to absorb the atmosphere around you, right? Your empathic little feelers are going out. So the whole first morning, the whole first afternoon of the conference, I am feeling out the room. I'm feeling out the state, I'm feeling out the environment that I've been placed in. And while this is happening, I am withdrawn. I am tucked in. I am a little self conscious. I feel like I've got to transition into this. What is this? And by the second day, by the end of the first day, I'm coming out and I'm feeling comfortable and flowy and me and joking and talking and sticking out my hand to meet people. But that weird transition period for me has always been, well, it used to be a source of shame what's going on with me? Am I insecure? What's happening? And now I really see it as no. This is actually something that I require. It's just how I'm made. It's how my energy works. It's how long it takes me to adjust into something. You know, the first time I go out for lunch with somebody that I've just met, I am awkward and I'm not myself. And about 20, 30 minutes into the conversation, I relax into it and then all of me comes out. It's like I have adjusted my field to match this other person's field. And now I'm feeling okay. I adjust my field from work, work, work to vacation, and now it's okay. I adjust my field from staring at my computer for two or three hours to the interruption that pulls me off and I go, oh, oh, oh. I must switch tasks. And anyone who's listening to this, who is in psychology, you understand that task switching is quite a big deal when it comes to cognitive development and everybody is different at doing it. So let's take it from task switching all the way through to what are the other components here? What are the other pieces? I hope I've got you thinking about this and maybe re evaluating your own feelings about yourself. When you are feeling odd or awkward in a situation, when you are feeling not like yourself, when you are feeling an inability or a discomfor from moving from one state to another state of being. This is how you're built. And you take the time that you take and you can't try and you know, well, you can try and change it. I've certainly tried to change it. But you can't be judging yourself is what I'm getting at for not being.
Like so and so over there.
Now, in flow, if I look at it from an energy, a strictly energy perspective, I've already touched on that you are having to emotionally, energetically move from one state of being to a different state of being. There is a transitional space. Transition is in itself an energy. It's not black, white, it's black and white and that grayish shade where they mix together along the edges. That grayish state is the energy of transition itself. And I have worked certainly to become more and more comfortable with that over the years. I've partly. One of the techniques that I've used is to one become aware of it. Oh, I know what's going on. Oh, now that I'm aware of what's going on, I can really just let this run its course because I know it will end when it ends. And it always ends. It always ends. And then I'm fluidly moving in the other thing I've done is to realize that because I have this very strong empathetic ability, both biologically empathetic as well as intuitively empathetic, I am able to feel what other people feel, think how they think. I am a chameleon in many ways. I shift to match what the other person is doing. And I do it because I'm concerned and I care. I do it perhaps as an act of self protection. I do it because I'm intuitively turned on and I. There's so many reasons people like us do this and it can be amazingly helpful because, well, certainly in my line of work I need to go in and feel what other people are feeling, right? That's how I help them and guide them. I've really utilized this skill. But I know that as I'm transitioning, all of this is coming into play, all of that is going on and I allow it to happen. And then if I don't want it to take as long as it can take, a part of me says, all right, you can be fully transitioned now. Just feel yourself fully connecting. Give yourself a little emotional nudge into the new situation. Ah, what is it? How do I want to feel now? And really that's the hallmark of flow dreaming, right? How do you want to feel right now? How do you want to feel on the first day of your vacation? How do you want to feel the first day of your conference? How do you want to feel when your workday is over and you're off the clock and now you can shift into making dinner or doing something more pleasant and you don't want to have to pull along extra energy of work with you for a couple of more hours, right? Who wants that? How do you want to feel instead? You can actually go into flow at that point. State it, state it through your emotions. I feel relaxed. I feel, ah, off the clock. I feel whatever it may be. And maybe you have the opposite, because all of mine have been really going from a high energy state to a lower or relaxed energy state. You may be going from a relaxed energy state into a state of high action. And you're like, why can't I get myself revved up? It takes so long. It takes so long to get me revved up and going. Well, you're shifting from one state of low energy, non action, rest, reflection, thought to energy, movement, doing, focusing, that too. Think there's a think about that gray transition area. Stop being hard on yourself. It takes me so long and everybody else just jumps in, but not me. Fine, you'll jump in and you will get there. Your energy will transition, I am sure of it. Just be aware of it, know that it's occurring and be gentle with yourself while it does. So there you go. A little nugget for you to think on and feel on. We're going to go to a quick break. When we come back, we will be doing a flow dream to have an experience of what transition really feels like. Task transition, kind of, you know, cue you into it. I know it's unusual, but I really think you'll enjoy it. So stay with me and we'll be back right after this.

Welcome back.
Before we get into our Flow Dream, I wanted to mention two playlists that you can find at the Flow Dreaming shop that's@flowdreaming.com what these playlists do is they are recorded flow dreams that allow you to change and grow and really become something different using the power of your emotion, your energy, co creating using the power of your consciousness. One of them is called my My Flowing Easy Life. My Flowing Easy Life playlist. And it's just a real good one for setting up your life so that everything feels easy for you. Whether it's shifting from one task to another or one state of being or focus to another, or just simply programming yourself to wake up to a beautiful day where everything is Working out for you. So that's a really good one. The other one that I wanted to mention is called Restored Aligned and in Control Meditation playlist. Again, that's Restored Aligned and in Control meditation playlist. Now, a meditation playlist is one you can listen to at night if you want to, while you're falling asleep. A lot of people do that. Yes. You can meditate to it. It is gentle and quiet, doesn't require quite as much emotion. And this playlist is really good for developing the ability in you to move seamlessly through some of those larger transitions we make in our lives. Moving from graduating school to, you know, what's next. Moving from being in a partnership to not being in a partnership. Moving from being not a mom to becoming a mom. Anything that requires this larger sense of change or transition. This playlist is marvelous with. Okay, so we're going to flow dream now. And when we flow dream, I'm going to ask you to close your eyes. And it's not a meditation, not self hypnosis. I want you to daydream. Just let go. You're going to move into what I call flow state. It's that state of almost how I described it earlier, intense focus. But you're so lost in this focus that you don't even realize you're focusing anymore. Just like when you're daydreaming, you go into the daydream and then you forget where you are or what you're doing and time passes and then you return and you think, where was I? That's flow state. It's a very potent state. And when we are in that state, we can paint emotionally, paint the future, paint our lives. And that's what we do. Full explanation. Just get the kit that I already mentioned on my website. All right, so you're ready. Close your eyes with me. Take a deep breath. Breath and relax. Let your shoulders drop. Roll your neck around. Move your jaw. Notice how you feel. Good and clear. Dropping all the weight of the day. All the weight. Lighter, freer. You're moving into a state of flow. Daydreaming. Daydreaming. And you can see yourself like you're on a swivel chair in the middle of the universe. On a swivel chair on a big, broad, flat surface. Goes as far as you can see in all directions. And realize I can swivel and spin on this chair to my heart's content. I can turn from one thing to the next. I can go in circles. I can change my focus, change my scenery, change what I see around Me, it's so easy. I just glide from one to the next to the next. And yet I never change. I'm still the same person, only what I'm looking at is changing. Only what's in front of me, of me is different. And this is me right now in my life as I move through in my mind and I feel the different things that are calling to me, occupying my eyes and feelings and heart and mind and attention. I can move from each one of them effortlessly, easily. There's no friction, there's no stress. I just shift and then I shift and then I shift and I shift again. And it feels so good, so refreshingly simple. I can feel myself moving and changing, shifting direction around. I go in the chair at my own perfect speed. It feels good.
And right as I feel there's a.
Whole layer of stress. Just melts off of me, melts off of me. Melts off of my life as I realize it's all all right. It's perfect. It's perfect. What I am is perfect. My shifting is perfect. I see it and I allow it and I encourage it and I embrace it. One thing to the next and then to the next. And on we go.
So easy, so light.
Now hold that feeling even now as we return. Coming back from flow and opening your eyes. Now that was a very brief journey into flow state. Typically, when we're flow dreaming to the audios, you might be there for 10 or 15 minutes, but yes, you can flow as quickly as 2, 3, 4 minutes, even 30 seconds at a time. Once you start practicing, you'll learn how to play with this in all different ways. So that's it. That wraps things up this week. I hope you enjoyed this interesting little perspective on what it takes to move inside of us, to shift from one thing to another and giving you some resources to kind of help you out and become aware. That's it. So love you guys and I will see you all here for the same time, same place next week for more Flow Dreaming.
