Flow Dreaming. It's a show where we talk about the power of your mind to change your world around you, to literally affect the fabric of your reality. We talk about this feeling of hope and joy and relief. And that is what being aware of your flow does. It gives you a feeling of power again in your lives. Breathe. I'm Summer McStravik and welcome to another episode of Flow Dreaming. Welcome to Flow Dreaming. This is Summer. I'm so happy to be with all of you here today. We're diving into episode number 5 29. Wait, 5. 92. Dyslexia 592. How to Make a retreat work for you, right? Tips and strategies. How to make your next experience away, something that's pleasurable and productive and where you feel like, this really made a change in me. I got what I came here for. You know, in the description, I say that retreats are little wrapped candies for your soul. So get all you can from it. You know, just suck on it slowly and enjoy the experience. Because frankly, most of us don't give ourselves retreats very often. And a retreat, right, for the purposes of our show today is any experience that you sign up for that's going to be outside of your norm. That's going to be something that in some way up levels you, engages you, pushes you, stretches you, renews you. You know, a yoga retreat, a sound healing retreat. In fact, I have a Flow Dreaming retreat coming up for my class in, I don't know, six or seven weeks. And thinking about the retreat planning it has made me realize what, you know, if I could share a list with all of my students of how to prepare for this, what to do to be ready for it, to be psychologically, emotionally, physically ready, to be as enriched as you can from this. What would I suggest? And that really is what came up with the basis of today's show. How to take those weekends, those weeks, those times away, when you're really investing in your personal growth, your body, your health, wellness, whatever it may be, and really just drink all that you can from it, as well as sort of letting yourself off the hook for some of the ways that maybe we've approached it in the past or the expectations that we've held that maybe haven't quite come to, you know, total fruition. The retreats that went really sideways on us, that we didn't get what we needed, that our roommate was sick the whole time and snoring the whole time, and we couldn't get over our jet lag, and we don't want that so we're going to look at that today from the lens of flow and from the lens of personal growth and personal development in general. So with that, we're going to get started. So how to make a retreat really be something extra special? Well, I know that we don't usually take ourselves on retreats very often. In fact, you know, when we do, we often feel a little guilt surrounding it. Especially if you are a parent, right? You are not wanting to leave your kids. You're thinking about the money you're spending on yourself instead of spending on them. You are thinking about the time away from the family. You're thinking about how you're using up vacation time that you could be using with your family. Oh, on and on. Boy, there's a huge wall of guilt TR tripping to get through, even to reach the point where we let ourselves have what ends up being two or three days often in an entire year for our own refreshment, rejuvenation, for our own relaxing, releasing, for our own wellness, our emotional health. I mean, you would think we'd give ourselves at least a month out of the year for that, right? But sneaking in those 30 days, I mean, those three days, that's about all we can do. So the very first tip I have for you with retreats is schedule more. Don't make them a luxury. Don't even think of them like a luxury, and certainly don't look at them as something that you are taking away from your family for. And this is going to rub a lot of you the wrong way who feel like, but it's selfish, but it's about me. It's not about them, and it should be about us. Look, I've been on, you know, 16 years of family vacations with my own family, and I can tell you, I do it for the kids, I do it for my husband. Usually I'm not doing it for me. I'm hoping to squeeze, you know, a few hours of sunshine out there on the beach, not having to worry about watching the kids in the water, not having to worry about, you know, is everyone scheduled? Has everyone been fed? You know, I'm hoping to get a few hours out of that whole time. But really, these vacations, by and large, are for my family. And if you're single and you're not going anyplace with a family, your vacations are like, where can I go where I'm single, Where it won't be weird, where it won't be awkward, and will it feel comfortable, and can I really do that by Myself. And, well, I've got to get a girlfriend to go with me or a friend. And then when I do, I gotta make sure that they're okay and, you know, that I see them enough and that they're not. You know, like, I still want to have some time alone, but not really. A retreat is one place where all of those things are not there, not factored at all. You're not worrying about your friends, right? Are they having fun? Are you paying attention to them? Or are you doing all the activities? Can you agree on the things together? You're not worrying about your family, how are they doing? You're taking care of them. Did everybody enjoy this time off? This is only you. And that opens the door for immense growth, immense recharging, as well as tons of incredible new ideas and new directions to jump and settle into you and your life. So this doesn't matter if it's a yoga retreat and you're focusing on your body. Doesn't matter if it's a meditation retreat, if it's a retreat to learn how to paint oils on canvas, or a retreat that is going to help you draft the outline of your novel. Right. There's something in this retreat, usually that's centered around what do I need? Where is an empty space in me that I'm ready to fill, that I want to grow into, that I need to fill in a gap? What's that? So you've got the right mindset now. Okay. You're ready for it. You're allowing yourself to. To go and do it and feel it, and you're excited and you're psyched, and the day comes and off you go on driving in or flying in, you're getting there and you're, wow, we're so excited. But when you get there, you realize, gosh, I'm really tired and I'm still kind of sweating it about work. I left some things undone. You know, I'm going to have to check my email. I'm going to have to go back to my room. I'm going to have to spend some time finishing up this project. My head's not in it. Oh, my gosh. And then we start to feel like, why am I here? I'm not getting it. I'm not getting into the feel of it. I look around and everyone else seems like they're fully releasing into this. They're laughing and they're having a great time, and I'm kind of still stressed. I'm not fully there. So this is tip number two. All right? Once you're at the retreat. What do you do? How do you maximize who you are there? So tip number two is we all have adjustment periods. I've worked really hard over the years to make my own adjustment periods get smaller and smaller and smaller. I remember when I was in my 20s and I took a trip, a backpacking trip through Europe with my boyfriend. We had three months. I think it took two weeks of utter, stressing out, crying breakdowns. We missed the train. We're supposed to leave this city, this date, because we have a hotel booking or a hostel booking. And two weeks. I finally broke and said, you know what? I'm just going to relax and we're going to roll with this. We're going to see what happens. Oh, my God. My boyfriend was so relieved, he cried tears of joy. He was like, you were horrible. I could not believe I had another two and a half months to go with you. I don't know what happened to you. You became this batshit crazy girl out of hell. What? And I said, you know what? It's just taken me this long to adjust to the fact I don't have my own shower, I don't have clean clothes to change into every day. All I've got is what's on my back and everything is unpredictable and all the continuity I'm used to is gone. It's a big adjustment. And I just realized I was trying to force everything into my day, my way of being, instead of just releasing and letting go and into it. So fast forward over the years. I go on vacations. Takes me three days to finally feel relaxed and comfortable. I enjoy myself for two days and then I start stressing about having to go home in two days. So out of seven, I've got two great days. And again, I looked at that and said, what's going on here? Can't you get your energy adjusted any sooner? So often in a retreat, you're looking at two days, three days, four days, maybe a week. You need to adjust that set point in yourself. The moment you step off the plane. You need to turn off everything else. Bye, bye, email, bye, websites, responsibilities. You all can live for a weekend without me. If it's an emergency, get ahold of me. But I'm transitioning my energy straight into this. Now, you can't just let this be something that happens to you. This has to be thoughtful. You have to get clear on it in yourself. I'm transitioning my energy now I'm getting into my room. One of my favorite ways to do it, I get into my room. I always love to take a photo of my hotel room before I lay all my crud all through the room. So I take a photo of it because it reminds me later of what a beautiful, lovely place I was in. It makes me feel all warm and yummy. Then I lay all my stuff everywhere and then I just sit for a few minutes and I close my eyes and I set the intention. I'm here because I'm giving myself time. I have no expectations for what will happen. I'm not creating these giant feelings of this has to happen. I have to relax. I have to, have to, have to. No. I'm just here and I'm all in and I'm wide open and I'm curious what flow is gonna give me. I'm curious what the universe higher self is going to give me. I don't know what this is going to bring in my life, but I'm really exc. Excited to find out. I am blank and open and willing and ready and I feel my energy shift. I make the shifting feeling sensation occur in me in my flow dream. This all takes maybe 10 minutes and then I'm ready. Okay, so tip number three, how to make the most of your retreat. I hope you guys are finding this helpful, but you've never really thought about it before, but you've just been pulling up, you know, sliding into your seat, get going, voom, voom. Never really pausing to consider how do I approach this from an energetic, emotional kind of flow aspect? Well, here you go, number three. Don't push it if nothing happens. Okay. So the other thing is we tend to build up our expectations. This is going to be amazing. I saved up for this. I love this teacher. I love this venue. And then you get there and the teacher has a cold and a sore throat and they're not all up to snuff and you're kind of let down. And then the venue is a little more ticky tacky than you thought it was going to be. And you're also feeling kind of meh. And then you start to wonder, why are we doing these exercises? This is so boring. I'm not getting anything from this. And then you go, eh, eh, eh, eh. And then you go into. And I thought I'd have all these great ideas and instead I just feel kind of locked up, intense still. And I'm not really getting much and I'm kind of disappointed in myself and where is this all going? And everyone else seems like they're having a great time and they're opening and they're crying and they're changing and they're connecting and don't push it. If nothing comes right, you're getting on the escalator of disappointment. And you keep trying to have other things outside of you fix it for you. The problem is, when you get yourself on that escalator of disappointment, you just keep going up it, and you keep waiting for things to fix it for you. Well, you guys know how I think. I don't wait for things outside me to fix it for me, because I've already started to generate an energy exchange with how I think it's going and what I'm expecting and what I'm hoping for and not getting and blah, blah, blah. It all tumbles around from there. So instead, I step back and I say, hey, maybe it'll come later. Maybe the plane ride home is when I finally exhale. Maybe it's at some later point, a week after this when I notice, gosh, I was so uptight and worried about it all. But then I realized I really did change and shift. Hindsight is everything, so why wait for that? Why not shift right now? If nothing seems to be right, if nothing seems to be breaking open for you, so what? Who cares? You don't. You're still awake, excited, eyes open, curious, wondering. I think I've mentioned this in a. In a show before, probably a couple hundred episodes back, though, so probably you haven't heard it. I was at a retreat. It was like a creative retreat. And we were making this movie with a wonderful artist friend of mine up in Canada. And the whole time I brought my journal, I was like, oh, yeah, I'm gonna really find myself and find my focus, and it's gonna just put a lot into clarity for me. And each day after we were done doing our art and talking and sharing and our magical ceremonies, I would go back and I would open up my journal, and I'd be like, I'm gonna think about stuff. And nothing came out. Like, absolutely nothing. So it was heading on to day five, and I was kind of bummed. And it was the last day, and I did something really unusual. I was feeling kind of like I didn't. Like. I don't. I don't know what this meant. I don't. I'm not sure what I got from this. I don't have any new direction. I. It was a fizzle. So I went down to the hotel bar, which I never do, which is kind of. It's always weird. Been a weird thing for me. I know you guys who Travel a lot. You're so used to it. But as a single gal going down to the hotel bar, it always just struck me as like, ooh, that's not really my energy. But I said, I am going to get a drink, and I'm just gonna sit, look out the window. So I did. I got myself a Bloody Mary. I love Bloody Marys. I think I love tomato juice. That's the thing. Spicy tomato juice. And I sat at the window, and I looked down, and it was really interesting. There must have been some really big game going on, like a World cup or something, because pretty soon all of these cars start whizzing down the street in front of me, and they have these flags draped over them, and these. These guys are hanging out their windows, and they're tooting these little horns and yelling, and, you know, people are honking at each other, and I'm like. It's like a spontaneous national holiday. What just happened here? Turns out it was. It was some, like, Canadian soccer game, just did something amazing, and people were just celebrating all over. And it was this moment of me getting out of me and getting absorbed into all the rest, and it went click. And I wrote down a thought, an idea, and then I wrote something else down. And pretty soon my journal had, like, eight pages in it before I went back to my room. Now, granted, it could have been the Bloody Mary, but I think it was me getting out of me. I think it was me finally giving up, Literally giving up. I give up. The thing's over. I'm, like, fizzled. And now I'm just gonna watch this weird celebration and boom, boom, boom. It's like my giving up is what led. All the subtle stuff finally flow in. I stopped squeezing so hard. So don't push it. If nothing comes, it's not a big deal. It'll come. It'll happen. So here are some ways now to manage your energy when you're actually there. So I always have a weird thing happen where I'm very empathic and I feel the room incredibly. Now I'm going to talk into this a little bit more on our next episode when I talk about masterminds, right? But I'm just going to touch on this now. The collected energy of everyone there is very strong. Now, you are generally going to be locked in a room with a whole bunch of people for, like, 12 hours. How often do you do that? Unless you're a teacher in the classroom, right? Or maybe you work at a giant, you know, facility of prison or a post office or a Huge corporation. Most of us are not locked for 12 hours, you know, with a lunch break in a room with anywhere from, you know, 12 to 24 to 100 to 200 to 500 people, depending on where you're going. And for those of us who are more solitary, it's a shock to our system. So I notice how does the room feel around me because I'm reacting to it. And often what I'm feeling isn't even me and picking up on a tidal wave of other people's energy. So you need to be aware of energy overload and when it hits you. Now, I always used to think, I've got to maximize this. Can you tell I'm an A type controlling personality. Obviously, that's why I went into flow, because life was trying its best to balance me out. But my personality said, show up on time, stay there the whole time, do all the exercises. Do the after dinner event as well. Well, I mean, get everything you can. This is why you're here. And then eventually I realized that is how on Sunday afternoon, I am done. Like, I am done done. And the event's not even close to over and I'm done. Now I give myself permission to leave early, to show up late. Sometimes when I'm not really sure how I'm going to feel, I sit in the back. Now, sitting in the back is always saying, I'm only halfway here, don't look at me. I'm not really going to participate. I need a quick out. But sometimes you do need a quick out, especially if you're really managing your energy. What happens if you show up and you're sick? Right? You're getting over something, you've got allergies, you have a chronic condition that's always leaking away your physical energy. You have permission to leave early. You have permission to not show up at everything. And when you have that feeling later of fomo, I missed out. Fear of missing out. And people are talking about, oh, weren't you there last night? It was so wonderful. It was such a heart connecting experience. You're like, no, I wasn't actually. I needed to take some time for myself. And you know what? Usually people understand. And you let go of that too, because keeping management of you is more important. Next, number five, hydrate. We all know that one. Hot tea, water, lemon. Bring your own. Bring a selection of juices in your bag with you. Don't rely on the hotel or the retreat center to have it all. They may not bring those things you need that you know are gonna support your Body, especially your hydration. Because especially for retreats that are indoors, most of us again, aren't used to being for 12 hours in an air conditioned, closed up box. And you will dry out. And when your cells dry out, your energy dries out, your soul dries out. So hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Now the next tip is how it feels to interact with others. Like, how do you do that? So some of you are like, I love retreats. I love connecting with people. I love sharing with them, I love learning from them. I really open up. I've made lifelong friends there. And others of you are like, I go, and I always hope I'm gonna meet people, but I never really do. And I see those tables full of people sitting together and I think to myself, did they arrange that before they even got there? How did they do that? Did they know each other? They must have known each other because if they just met here and they didn't invite me over, now I really feel extra bad. No one ever sees me. Okay, so these are the two extremes. And yeah, the people who I call connectors, they are busy connecting with people in their Facebook groups and their online group groups already setting up. Like, I'd love to get to know you better. We're both going to be at the retreat. Do you want to share a car there? Do you want to share a room? Do you want to meet for lunch? Let's get a table together, right? They're doing it and that's fine. That's wonderful. Not everyone is like that. If that's you do it and do more of it. But if you're the person who shows up and sees that table full of people, you have to make some considerations, right? First thing is letting go of that. No one invited me, no one sees me. How come they're all together and I'm not in there with them? That feeling's gotta go because otherwise what's happening is you're showing up to a retreat, but your energy is only halfway there because there's still another part of you that's saying, no one really wants me here. I'm the only one who wants to be here. But no one else could care. They could all care less that I'm here. No, they couldn't care less that I'm here because I don't care that I'm here. What is that setting up for you? It's setting up a sense of defeat, right? We feel that way because it's a defensive posture, right? We can protect ourselves if we feel that way. We can explain to ourselves why we weren't invited and can't join in. But I want you to go past that. I want you to find the other side of that, the door out of that and what that is. You need to make a point. You need to say to yourself, I will invite someone to lunch. I will say, you're really fascinating. Do you want to have lunch? Look at retreats, there's usually buddy exercises, right? You and someone else. When you meet someone who feels kind of nice, someone you connect with, or if you meet another person who kind of feels like a loner like you, and you know, they're probably not going to do anything, reach out and say, hey, at lunch I'll save a seat. You know, would you mind saving a seat for me next to you? Or would you want to go off and meet, you know, and have some. Have a bite together? Do you want to talk more? I'm curious about you, your life, your work, your health, your whatever. Set it up and reach out, make it a point to do that every day. And if you're a person who says, no, no, that's my alone time, that's when I have to escape back to my room to recollect my energy. That's fine, too. I've done this at events and people have said, yeah, I will, but I will be there half an hour after lunch starts because I have to go back to my room and just relax and chill and get a few things done. And I say, totally understand. I'll see you at one o' clock then. But the point is, I'm not waiting to be asked. In fact, I've often been surprised, right? I mean, you would, you would think, you know, that I would know a lot of people at the events I go to. I don't. I often don't. And they don't know me from a hole in the wall. They're certainly not inviting me out. So I'm the one trudging back to my room saying, well, no one knows me. And I ate. I ate with a little group of people at the communal table, but then they all started talking with other people, so I got up and left. That's not retreat energy. That is you prolonging more of the same internal image. And if you go to retreat, probably a part of you wants to give that up. So take him, take a moment. It's so rewarding. I have often asked people to have lunch with me and they go, oh, well, I'm having lunch with these four other people. Why don't you Join us. And I go, perfect, now I have a whole table full. Right? They're just waiting for you to invite yourself in. They're waiting for you to say, may I? I've never had someone say, no. I've never had someone say, well, no, it's just, you know, the only time is when they've had like a pre scheduled work conference. Like, well, we're going to be doing this thing. Well, she's going to be doing an energy clearing or on me or something like, okay, right. I'm not gonna sit around and watch you get your energy cleared. So I understand that's not something you'll invite other people to. So that's it, that's, that's the tip. What are we on five or six now? I've lost track. Here's another really good one, interesting one. I love this. Whenever I first get to the retreat, I'm aware of who's checking in with me, around me, who's on the elevator with me, around me, who got to the airport with me, around me, who was on the same flight with me, around me. Who do I keep passing in the halls over and over? These people are more in alignment with you. I don't know why. I've been trying to figure this out for years. I've spoken with them a lot. I've said, hey, I saw you from like check in and now we end up sitting at the first table together accidentally the first hour. And then we ended up being. And you just keep kind of getting in the same track with these people. Not intentionally. I always think these people have something for me, I have something for them and I'm letting this happen and I'm allowing it. And I often don't even know what that is. I have no idea what the thing is. I had a really interesting example of this at my last retreat. Well, it was a mastermind. There was this gal I had seen the year before and we both stayed the extra night and we had breakfast in the morning and the room was pretty empty. There were only a few of us who'd stayed over, who hadn't flown out. And we got to talking and she came from overseas and I was saying, yeah, you know, it's always funny on this last day it feels so lonely and empty. She said, yeah, it really does feel lonely and empty. And we got talking about that. I said, well, you take care, have a nice, you know, long 21 hour flight home. I really feel for you. Fast forward this year. Turns out I end up sharing a car to the airport. With another gal who invited me to share. And then she said, oh, and there's going to be another gal coming with us too. Turns out it was the same woman, exact same woman as before. And I looked at her and I said, wow. We only spoke at the very end of the retreat last year, too. And here we are. It's been two days. I haven't even seen you in the room. We haven't crossed paths. I haven't sat at one table with you, and yet we're seeing each other again at the very end. And on the ride home, it was a very twisty, turny, curvy, curvy road. And our driver was really, really bad and scary. And this gal got incredibly car sick. And she just was like, I gotta get out. And we're all starting to stress because if we don't get there on time, we're gonna miss our plane. But she has to get out. You've been car. Have you been carsick before? It's terrible, right? And she starts. She bursts out in tears and she cries and she starts to say, I'm so not supported in my country. And, you know, it's very chauvinistic. And everything I'm trying to do is. It's like throwing my head against a wall and I'm going back into it. And I just, you know, it's like she broke. It was like the sickness, the car sickness, the queasiness took down her last defense. And she shared all that she really needed, that she was afraid to speak up and be seen at the event. And, you know, picture this. It's a dark night, it's been raining, it's wet, filled with traffic, windy, twisty road. She is sitting there on the side of the road in her heels and short skirt, bent over, throwing up. I'm there with her. So is the other gal. And we just said, you know what? I'm glad we can be here with you. We really needed to hear this from you. And you needed to let this go. You needed to finally say it's okay and own up. And we're all here at the tail end of this together because you are not supposed to take these feelings home again a second year. Long story short, eventually she feels better, get back in the car. I followed up with her. I said, honey, I'm here. You need support. You've got my support. Reach out to me, email me, PM me. And I hope I can be that. So this was a very long story, but I'm showing you she's a person that I Met at a very specific time, over and over, for, as it turns out, a very specific purpose that didn't even reveal itself for two years. So notice these people and go into them, and often they're not the biggest stars in the bunch, right? It's not like, you know, the. The speaker and the. The special guests and. No, it' often someone just like you or me talk to them, be there, show up, extend, say we keep passing. There must be something we need to share. Let's try and figure this out. So the last thing I want to share is that speaking of the big stars, speaking of the speakers, I noticed this also at the last mastermind I went to, there was a table where a lot of the stars clumped together. And probably they did it intentionally, or who knows, maybe they didn't. You know, like birds of a feather flock together. People who feel of the same energy level tend to sit with one another. And sometimes it's. Yeah, because they have been doing business together and networking together, and they've seen each other before and they're comfortable. But if you're like me, I often go to retreats because I want to meet new people, right? I want to reach out and extend and talk to new people and see who they are. But I noticed this one table kept having sort of the same people filter in, and they were all the people that, you know, were kind of known as bigwigs. So I said, I'm gonna go sit at that table. I'm gonna go sit. I'm gonna plop myself right down there and stick out my hand and say, hi, here's me. Who are you? I know all about you. You're a star. But I did, because I realized why not. The moment I caught myself having this, what ended up feeling like an emotion of envy. Like, how come it's them and not me? I said, oh, I don't like that feeling. Why not fix that? Why not just go sit over there? So I did, and I talked and we chatted, and it was lovely. I can't say anything came of it, but I was correcting an energy imbalance in myself. And at retreats, I want to have as few of those as I can because again, my desire is to be wide open. That means clearing as much resistance. Fear of missing out, envy, concern that I'm not seen or good enough or contributing feelings of overwhelm. All that stuff has to be released and let go of so that you can fully take in why you're there. And that is the very last piece I want to wrap with, why, why are you there? Retreats form interruptions in our lives, right? They are moments that help us pivot, reorient, get back into alignment. Retreats are almost never long lasting. You feel the effects for a few weeks, maybe a few months, and then you kind of have forgotten them. You forgot who you were and what you experienced. You kind of forget, know that going in, know that retreats are something that have to be done often, right? What's that old saying about self care? It's like taking a shower. You don't do it once a year. If you want it to be effective, your retreat should come more frequently, at least every couple of months. Because that means every few months you're pivoting, you're readjusting yourself, you're allowing yourself to let down and relax and open up and shift. And that has to be done many, many times over the course of the year, over the course of your life. If you don't, it's kind of like, well, well, you ever had your teeth cleaned? You get them cleaned regularly every six months. They stay pretty clean and nice and you don't get many cavities, but you don't get your teeth cleaned for years and years and pretty soon you got periodontal disease. What do you think happens for your soul? I know that was kind of a threatening analogy, but it's kind of true. So your retreat is there to be a pivot. It's there for you to sink into experience, draw from, but be prepared for it also to dissipate and fade because it's supposed to. We don't live our lives in these heightened moments and these heightened states. We live our lives in relatively normal states using our day to day tools that we then punctuate with these beautiful heightened experiences. And that is natural and that is, is normal. So go in knowing that and when you leave, you know that too. So I hope all of these tips, by the way, I've. I hope all of these tips are helping you at the next retreat or you know, you know, going away event, heart opening event, wellness event that you end up going to, whether it's a music festival or something more sedate. Obviously my perspective is generally more networking events as well as flow dreaming and wellness events. Now I've had the privilege of putting on many in person events, so I've seen it from the perspective of the organizer and I've also attended many events, so I've seen it from the perspective of the attendee. And that's it. Those are my gleanings. The best of. I really hope they helped you. I love to hear your feedback if this made a difference for you. If you really thought that was a really useful little nugget of a show today, do me a favor, take a screenshot of the show, you listening to it, pop it up on Instagram and hashtag Flow Dreaming or summermixtravic.
