734; Feeling Suffocated? Here’s Why You’re Afraid to Let Out Your Inner Wilding
22 Oct 2024 · 33 min
Solo episode by Summer McStravick (Flow Dreaming) encouraging listeners to reclaim their "inner wildling"—a liberated, authentic, expressive self—by confronting limiting beliefs and fears that keep them 'safe' but emotionally caged. The host contrasts rule-following safety narratives (from family/upbringing or culture) with freedom work (an energetic/manifestation practice) and offers practical steps: journal prompts ("Where am I holding back and what am I holding back?"; "What would make you feel wild right now?"), small experiments (pink hair, kickboxing, solo trips, joining groups/festivals), and Flow Dreaming resources (Goddess Power playlist; Remove Limitations and Wake Up Your Imagination). Tone is instructional, encouraging, and promotional, with anecdotes (high-end admin; pastor's wife) and cultural examples (Viking fair, Red Hat Club) to illustrate points.

Suffocating, maybe feeling that way a little bit, but afraid to let your wild woman out. Well, here's why. And we're going to let her out today and maybe even invite her to dance. Or him or them. Everybody's included in the wild dance. So we've been taught that if we play it safe, we'll be okay. We'll have money, have a partner. Life won't hurt us. And yet so many of us have ended up taking that message to an extreme in ourselves and in our lives. It's understandable because we were told that was the safe way to go about things. Yet then we end up in lives and careers that are nothing like what we wanted them to be. We have become what other people told us to become and we lost sight somewhere of who we and actually are. So I'm going to encourage you to find that person again. Find you. It's not too late. And you're allowed to challenge those people around you who just won't understand. And you're not going to lose that safety either. So I'm going to invite you today to let your inner wildling out to dance. And I'm going to promise, I promise you're going to love it.

So welcome to Flow Dreaming. Still kind of. Woo woo. I've been playing around with this new video format. If you like it, please send me a little note telling me that you do. Because I'm still getting used to it myself. I'm discovering that it's not so different than when I'm teaching my classes and working with my clients and students. Even though I have to assume you're right there on the other side listening as opposed to knowing that you are there. I'm going to go ahead and assume because my wild woman wants to be freed, frankly from the fears and worry of about going into this whole video world. And that's a really good way for us to segue into frankly, today's topic. I was inspired by two of my own clients to talk about this today. I say wild woman or wild man, wild person. And really I could be talking about authenticity, but that is so unsexy. Everybody talks about being authentic, blah blah blah. And I love authenticity, don't get me wrong. But when I say wild woman, there's something sexy about it. And again, I'm using another unpopular term. If you're a Gen Xer here, you remember when that wasn't such a bad term, but then it became, you know, a way of objectifying a lot of people and it really fell out of fashion. So I'm going to define that for you right off the bat. Sexy for me is something that is alluring, something I want to move toward and go into and explore. It's something that's freeing. It's something that is not self conscious. It's something that feels alive in a tangible, kind of saucy way. That's what I mean by sexy. So I want your wild woman to feel that kind of unbridled freedom embodied in this whole concept. Okay. The two clients I was talking about who inspired me, one of them is a high end admin. She spends every day grinding for her own clients and then grinding for her actual 40 hour a week job. And she just grinds. She's an admin and she just plans things and plots things and puts out fires and her life outside of that is very, very narrow. And it's a role where she's not really allowed to step out and be herself or she feels that way because it would risk her reputation, risk her position and so forth. My other client is a pastor's wife and some of you know exactly what that means. She has appearances to keep up, she has a storyline to follow and what she's discovered is that she doesn't want to anymore. That she's been. She's tired of doing things for, you know, the church and the culture and the guys, and she's got another path, but she doesn't want to destroy and burn everything down. Okay, now, neither one of these people could be you, but if anything I said just kind of yanked on your heart a little bit. Like, there's parts of me that I would love to explore, I'd love to expose, I'd love not to be afraid of, ashamed of. I know it sounds a bit like shadow work as well, but it's not. It's about freedom work. Freedom work. I just, I just coined that, I think. Freedom work. What happens when we get into this kind of inner jail inside of ourselves about who we're supposed to be and how we're supposed to be living is that we end up in lives that are very circumscribed. It's like, like being in a little box. It's like a self imposed jail. And the funniest thing is the jailer is usually not anything outside of ourselves. It's ourself because we were taught and we took it to heart that if we did certain right things, we would get payoff. And especially if you come from an unstable background, you know, a home with, you know, without, you know, a strong family upbringing, a home with abuse, a lot of instability, some mental illness, some addiction thrown in, the whole everything, you are really going to hear that you need to be safe and that there are certain things you have to do to be safe. And if you do things that are at all unsafe, you're going to end up just like that. So the words that come from our upbringing can be one way or another. It can be. Everything was so chaotic. I am not going to be that. I will be this. And boom, you just put yourself in a nice box that you kind of make a deal with the universe. If I do this, I'll get that. And then you've been waiting for the payout and you've gotten payout. That's. That's kind of the thing. Hold on. The other side of this is that you came from a family that said, don't act like that. Don't be that. If you do, it's going to look bad. You're not going to survive. You can't go into art. Don't be a writer, for goodness sakes. Ugh. You've got to marry somebody stable. You've got to go into a stable. Get a, get your cs Programming degree, for goodness sakes. And you heard that message, which was very much straight down the line. Do these things and you will master the material side of life and you'll be fine. Both of these, both of these scenarios can fail us. Okay? And maybe you are kind of resonating with one or the other, or maybe you just found yourself trapping your own inner wildling on your own because of something else that came up inside of you. A hurt, a betrayal, being shut out. Okay, caveat. You guys know I'm not a therapist, but I've been practicing this emotional, energetic work for 20 years now and teaching it, well, practicing it for 25 years. Teaching it for 20 years. So a lot of the observations I'm giving you are based on both practical, you know, common sense understandings as well as having peered into thousands of people's minds, flows and hearts and going into that flow space, as I call it, and really reading them and all of them reading the cloud of who they are. So this is where this is coming to you from. And I just want you to note that as we go forward, because I'm going to give you some ideas today for letting out your inner wildling, and I want you to have some trust around it that you're not going to burn down the farm if you do so to go back to my clients, in both of their cases, a lot of what's happening is they have internalized all of this yammer, yammer, yammer that told them, be this and you'll get that. And they did that, and they're doing that, and they're discovering that life is tasting very stale, tasting brittle, that there is a part of them that is harder and harder to keep caged. And the harder it is, the more you press against something, the more it wants to reveal itself. Now, this could be a way of thinking. This could be a spiritual belief or practice that you've become drawn to. This could be your own gender or, you know, sexuality. It could be anything. Many of us have at least a little something that we don't want to expose or let the world see. Because it will be bad. It'll be bad. What I mean by it'll be bad is we feel that it's potentially dangerous. If I get a taste of the wild, oh, my God. It's the slippery slope. It's, this is your mind on. Or your brain on drugs. Remember that? We think it'll suck us in, so we don't give it an inch. There's a lot of other reasons, though, why we don't embrace our wildling. That's just the first one. So another thing I love to do, like. Oh. One of my deepest passions is to examine the patterns and blocks and fallacies in our thinking, our limiting beliefs. I call them our ceilings. So as I outline this for you today, I'm going to expose a couple of these limiting beliefs, a couple of these fallacies, these untruths. And I'm going to share with you not only why we have them, but what they're. How they're working for us, like why we've kept them. Because no sane person would keep something that's not working. So if we've been keeping this inner wildling down, there's been a reason for it. Again, inner wildling, this is not the person who's going to run through the village and burn down every house. The inner wildling is somebody who is able to go out and show themselves to the world and say, these are my friends and this is my work and this is what I trust in and this is who I love. Seems easy, but just check in right now in your own life, do you feel authentically involved in everything you're doing? Do you feel an embrace of everything that you're encountering? Your work, your family, your friendships, your partner? Do you feel an embrace of it? Do you feel like, I'm free in this? They see me and I'm free in it. That's what we're going for. So people can't embrace you in return unless you're actually showing them a true thing. You show them a thing that's not so true, then they will embrace that because they love you and they care about you. If you show them a thing that is more true, chances are they will still embrace you and love you if they're the right people to love you and embrace you. So the one thing we do want to burn down are all those paper dolls, the ones that say one thing, but really it's based on trickery. I know, I went there. Oh, this is getting to be a heavy episode. But I want you to think about if you're relying on trickery of yourself or others. Again, there's no judgment here. I've done this, everybody's done this. But we only engage in that when we are afraid that what we actually show will be shunned. As an aside, this is not even in my notes, but it just popped up. I dragged my husband to a Vikings cosplay event, I kid you not. A Vikings fair, basically, in my town, not too long ago. And I said, oh, please dress up. He said, no, I'm not going to. I don't even want to go. I said, you're going to love it if you go. Well, we went and we saw log throwing. We saw the women competing to carry the heaviest giant boulders. We drank meadow, and we met a bunch of people who do something called larping, which is live action role playing, fully decked out in the most awesome Viking costumes ever. I was even inspired. I admit I bought a little. Little ensemble myself. But the point of this is, think about what it is in you that wants to have that kind of freedom. And the fact that we walked around and everybody was loving it. I love your weirdness. That's. We were practically scream. Screaming at each other. I love your weirdness. And you know, when you go to those places where you immediately are talking with people and making friends, like a lot of times, like a sport event, for example, everybody is kind of extra nice to each other because we all are thinking we are the weirdest people here. So I'm gonna love you up. God just met you, but I am loving you up. This is what happens when you start to let yourself go into places and be ways that you previously said. No, no, no, no, no. So I know the Viking fair is kind of an aside, but look, if I was afraid of if I just wanted to look from the outside in and just observe and not become part of this joy and. And the cool, you know, Celtic dancing and everything going on. Celtic. I know it's not Viking. Don't you have to tell me? I know. I'm very aware of that. My Last name is McStravic. You got all the Scotland up in there, not the Viking. Although I do have Viking ancestry. But nonetheless, if I was staying an outsider, I would not feel free. But my wildling self resonated with mostly the freedom that I was experiencing in this crowd. The freedom of being. You guys ever go to, like, you know, festivals in the desert and so on? It's the freedom in the crowd. Burning Man. Freedom in the crowd. There's a feeling. I'm not saying you have to go to a music festival or even a Viking festival. Maybe your freedom is, I am going to quit this job and this career. Well, that's a big freedom. You're stepping out in a big way then. But it could be a smaller way. Maybe. I am going to let myself finally take up kickboxing and see what happens. I might suck at it, but I'm going to do it because it feels like I could Be freeing a certain something in me. So I want you to be thinking right now, what is your freedom? What is your wildling? And what's been holding it back all of this time, all of these years? So again, I mentioned one. Sometimes we're afraid if we let it out a little, it's going to burn down the town. No way. Can't. Not. Slippery slope. Nope. Nope. And I know I'm making kind of fun of that, but it's a real honest concern. If I get a taste of this, I'll never be able to go back and hold myself in as tightly again. And then what will happen? Well, in flow dreaming, we're always thinking about what we call emotional endpoints, right? So the emotional endpoint is if I let myself out a little, and then I can't ever go back to that same amount of repression that was keeping me safe, then I'm going to become a lot less safe over time.
A lot less safe.
In fact, I might not be able to pay my bills anymore. I might lose my job, my partner might leave me, my family might not understand me, and I might become even more of an outsider to them. Like this whole domino cascade of stuff goes on in our heads. But in each case, I want you to think about what's really happening. You're actually prioritizing the way you want or think other people see you and their comfort in the way they see you. You're prioritizing that over your own self. So, for instance, if you're afraid of disappointing them and you are keeping up this look, keeping up this way of living or this guise, what you're really saying is I care about the people around me to the point where I am willing to show up for them the way I think I should be or that they expect me to be so that I don't upset them, so that I don't ask them to change or grow. Fundamentally, it's an unkind thing to do. I'll say it again. Fundamentally, it's an unkind thing to do. Because what you're really saying to the people that you value the most, that you love the most, is, I'm not gonna let you grow. I'm afraid you won't. I think so little of you that I know you won't grow to meet me where I'm going. So I'm just going to keep putting up this facade for you. It's disingenuous. When that really sinks in, you start to see that if I want to carry these relationships with me through the end of my days. I want them to see me. I want to challenge them to grow with me. I don't want to have it be my responsibility to keep us all capped in place. And, you know, the funny thing is, they might be doing the exact same thing with you, thinking you're not going to follow them. You're not going to be the one who can keep up. So when we break through on this level, we realize that, yeah, I'm gonna. I'm. When I go to my dinner parties with friends, I'm the first one dropping all the F bombs at the table. I want you. I don't do it here because, you know, this is public. My friends know this about me, you know, and I always tell them that intelligent people use more foul language. And then we argue about that for a while and how it's not, you know, good and polite and polite manners and all that. And I say, yes, but I know when to and when not to. But I want to use the magic of all language because it's been given to us to use every word. Just like every emotion has an intention and a purpose. So we get into fabulous discussions about who we should be, even with each other. And I want to really encourage you to do that. So that fear that other people will think you're bad or you're too far out or they'll just stop accepting, you got to let it go. It's done. And I think this is a realization that a lot of people, as they age, really get into, you know, the Wacky Grandma Red Hat Club. There used to be this club, like, of women, old women who wore red hats, and God, you know, I saw them as recently as about three or four years ago at a park. And their whole thing is to dress obnoxiously and to be obnoxious. I mean, not mean obnoxious, but just like, the IDGAF kind of obnoxious. And I love it because what they're saying is, I did everything the way they told me to do. I did all the things. And now my kids are grown, I'm retired, my husband's passed on, and now I'm just gonna do whatever I feel like, and, world, it's not up for me to please you anymore. You can please me. I love that philosophy. And I know there's periods in our lives where we feel like I can embrace it someday, but I can't embrace it now. I've got too many responsibilities. I've got too many bills to pay. I've got this, you know, this whole career to keep building. I've got this thing to put this thing to put on, this Persona to put on. But really, do you want to wait until a certain point when you say, oh, I can be free now? We all hear stories about people who retire, and then three weeks later, they're gone, and we feel sorry for them. Like, man, you know, they waited their whole life for this, and then they got two weeks of it. I don't want to be like that. I want to start integrating this now. I want to see this wild person, this wild me, this hungry me, this this excited me, this me that feels like I want to embrace. I want to see her now as much as I possibly can. So for a little historical context to this whole idea, and basically talking about rule followers versus rule breakers, and I don't mean this at all in a sense of people who are set on doing evil things, all right, that is just take this off the table. When you cause suffering, that's a completely different conversation. A rule follower and a rule breaker means somebody is making the rules and other people are following those rules, period. We, especially as women or those who identify as women, we have taken it into us that we especially have to be careful about this. I know that's inflammatory. I say I'm going to say the heretical things now and then, but it goes back to what Adam and Eve. Adam says I'm following the rules. Eve says I'm breaking them. Ooh. We have the pilgrims doing all the good stuff and the witches doing all the bad stuff. We have cops, we have robbers. And unfortunately, in a society that tends to value patriarchy more, we have men and we have women. So you can be a rule follower, you can be a rule breaker. I would love to see everybody be a little bit of both, because the rule breaker is really a person who's saying inside themselves, most of these rules that I've created are just rules that I've created, not that society has created. The rules that society has created are generally for our benefit. You know, don't go through red lights, don't harm other people, don't steal things. You know, every rule in the good book, right? Don't do those things. But if you think about the wild person inside you, you don't actually want to do most of those things. Well, maybe you want to run a red light or something, but you shouldn't do that. But you don't really want to do those. You don't want to do bad things. You want to do things that are actually freeing, exciting, exploring, you want to live with a little more risk inside your soul. Funny thing is, a lot of the stuff that you think is risky, that's just you. It's not other people. We have this idea that whatever we think to be true, everybody else is also thinking exactly the same way. Okay, for instance, we all know that there are very famous artists, right? People who are making bonko money or, oh, there are a list celebrities. And you're like, yeah, they took a risk. My mom would never have said, become an artist, become a celebrity, become a writer. You're not going to make money there. You're going to be starving all the time. It's a very old way of thinking. And we assume the people who actually succeed, it was some.
There's something special.
There was some divine intervention. There was some extraordinary good luck. They were born into the family. Well, actually, a lot of times they are born in the family, but we. We ascribe it to something else because we say, that's not safe. That is in your mind. There are plenty of artists who came from nothing, plenty of actors who started with nothing. There are politicians right now in our. In our political sphere who started with absolutely nothing. Regular, regular people. So it really makes you think, why do. Why did I take that in? Why did I ingest that and make that gospel? Why did I make that my truth? Who am I trying not to harm? Who am I trying not to ruffle the feathers of who? And are those people so valuable to me that I'm willing to give up my life to keep playing that role? When you ask that, the answers usually are no, no. And if they are that valuable to me, then they really should know me a little better. And they should say, how come I haven't seen you grow in the last few years? How come I haven't seen you change your thinking or your thoughts or your spirituality or your direction or your career? What's going on? Wouldn't that be awesome if people we knew and love were always saying that to us? Like, what's going on? You say, oh, I stopped because, you know, it was unsafe or I'd upset you or et cetera. So let's get down to it. How are we going to do this? How are we going to do this? Well, couple of ways. Firstly, of course, I'm going to encourage you to practice flow dreaming. And if you don't know what that is, it is a practice for manifestation. It is a practice for really kind of discovering who you are, healing and moving up levels inside yourself. It helps you create new emotional states in yourself and play the long game of what I call manifesting. So if I were to flow Dream, which is, again, like I said, you know what? If you guys are curious about it, go to my YouTube channel. Oh, wait, you're probably on my YouTube channel. If you're watching this. If you're listening to the podcast, then go to my YouTube channel. Because I record both in video and in audio. But I have a playlist@flowdreaming.com, it's called the Goddess Power Playlist. It reawakens that sexy part of yourself, the part of you that feels authentic, the part of you that feels like, I am allowed to be seen. It's safe to be seen. I am allowed to shift. There's another one that I encourage you to get. It's called Remove Limitations and Wake up youp Imagination. And both of these will be linked so you can go straight to them. If you use that flow dream, which is kind of like a guided meditation, it's also going to free certain pieces of yourself. And, you know, even if you just listen to it and let it work on you, think of it like slowly unwrapping the ribbons of a box. You will become unwrapped. You will become unbound. So doing your emotional, energetic practice for me is my number one way for pretty much everything I'm telling you. You. I'm. I'm suggesting to you that, yes, you can actually change your emotional self. You can change your mental self, and you can change your energetic self. Manifesting isn't just about creating stuff outside you. For me, it's largely about creating inside things. So that's number one. Here's something that we can all do right now. We can ask ourselves, where am I holding back and what am I holding back? Very simple question. Where am I holding back and what am I holding back? Journal on it. Think on it. If you're. If you're driving or whatever, just be thinking. And some of the things you may be holding back out of fear, like, I'll fail. It's your own inner limitations. Some things you're holding back are because you feel that outside society will not love it or approve of it or allow you to move into it. That's question number one. Question number two, what would make you feel wild right now? This takes it down from the big picture question, because that can feel a little overwhelming. I just want to know what could make you feel wild right now? Like what? What? I, for example, I was cruising the Internet a couple days ago, and I Saw this galaxy, and she had the most gorgeous pink hair. And okay, in high school, I had hot pink hair. I had a lot of hair colors, but hot pink was definitely one of them. I think it was like 1987. Ooh, showing my age. Loved it. And a part of me has been thinking the last four or five years.
I love to have pink hair again.
That would make me feel so wild. Why am I not doing it? It's not because I don't think you would accept me or not accept me for it is that I'm afraid I might miss my natural hair and it'll take a long time to grow back. And I've already had that experience. Some of you know, I went through stage two breast cancer, and I went through a year of silky baldness. Absolute no hair at all. So I know what it means to take three years to get that back. But nonetheless, I'm still teeter tottering on it. I think it'd be so fun and cool. Maybe there's something else that would make you feel wild. Maybe taking a solo vacation, that's daring. Maybe it's with a group of. Of like a women's. Women's retreat. Maybe it is driving too fast somewhere. Maybe not the freeway, but hopefully, like, maybe go to one of those auto parks. They actually let you rent sport cars and do this. Maybe being wild means buying something out of your means, and I'm not suggesting that either. But maybe there's a part of you that says, I never give to myself and I really want to reward myself. And I don't want to just splurge because I've held it back for so long and I end up buying something stupid. I actually want to buy it with intention. Maybe the wildness is about your body, and maybe it's feeling again, a sexy. In the classic term, happy with my body, wantable. Seen by others. I know. As many of us age, particularly women, we notice we become a lot more invisible. We are not perceived the same way. No one's given us a second glance, and we kind of fall into a different category after a while, and it's nothing we intend. And sometimes it's hard to accept yourself in that category. We feel a loss. It's not inevitable. You can feel however you want to feel. You can be as seen as you want to. Sometimes it's just because we're tired of showing up so hard and doing our hair every day and taking care of our skin, wearing the right clothes, and we're like, screw it, I don't do that. Anymore. Maybe you do, though, and so you.
Want to recapture that aspect of your wildness.
Same goes for you guys too, by the way. Maybe your wildness here's. I'm just giving examples, right? Maybe your wildness is speaking your mind about something that you usually repress. An unpopular opinion in an unpopular place. Ooh. And why would you want to hold that back? I don't want to create drama. I don't want to create upset. I don't want people to think that I'm not like them. But again, what are we doing here? We're prioritizing other people's comfort over our own inner joy, our own inner being. And what it often says is we're not quite with the right people. Now remember, your inner wild doesn't have to be the same with everyone. My inner wild with my mom is different than my inner wild with my husband, which is different than my inner wild with one friend versus another friend versus a client. You're going to shift and change. You don't have to be the same being with everyone, but your goal is to be as authentic and clear and comfortable and sexy with yourself and your life in as many areas as you possibly can. So think about the balance of the wilding in you and just think about it. How. How expressive are you allowing yourself to be? Is it time to shift careers? Big question. Is it time to shift directions? Is it time to shift friendships? And if you do, will you be ruined by it? I think that's one of the main questions everybody feels. That is the emotional endpoint that we are all avoiding at all costs. We think she'll ruin us. Remember the old parable of the wanton woman, the hussy, right? The ruiner of men, Eve herself. We don't trust her, but that also means we don't trust ourself. So part of recapturing a wildling is growing and developing this deep inner trust where it's been broken, where it's been controlled. I don't trust you, so I'm going to control you and what you can do and what you can think and how you show up and the work that you do and the career that you picked and all of the above. Your self trust is the next area for you to look deeply into. Do I trust this being in me? Do I trust their needs and their wants? And if I give in to them, do I trust that I will continue to be safe and potentially even happier? That is the million dollar question. But just imagine for a second. What if this year you really developed and worked on yourself. What if that became the focus of your personal growth and the focus of your heart, the focus of your flow dreaming practice that I encourage you to do right, which was I am myself in all ways and I let myself and I, I give myself permission and I trust myself. And if I do this, I will expand into something beautiful and greater. And if I lose people or if I challenge them to see me differently, that's a gift to them because I don't need to be coddling them and treating them like, you know, in, in infantilizing them, making them babies and saying, I don't trust you're not going to get me, so I'm not going to even give it to you. If you're in my life, you're that valuable that you should see and accept me. That's my gift to you. It's the biggest gift I can actually give you. So, you know, to wrap up, please, please, please let your inner wildling out, let him out of the cage and choose some things where you've had pushback inside yourself around and see what happens if you give in to them, if you give a little. And again, these are things that are healthy, these are things that are, you know, not against the law, not criminal. I don't mean it like that. I mean these inner barricades, these inner boundaries that have been suffocating, suffocating who you are. You start doing that and the, the concept of inner healing and self trust is going to take on an entirely new dimension for you and you'll experience an entirely new feeling of I'm okay, it's okay, we're okay. Can't tell you guys how many times I've come out from being with friends or even doing an interview or teaching. And I think to myself, oh my God, why did I say that? Oh, people are going to hate that. They're going to take that wrong. And I remind myself, it's done, it's out there. I said it, I did it, I thought it, let's see where it lands. And 99 times out of 100, 99.9 times out of 100, no one blinks. And I realize it's because it's my own self perception. I am the only one who noticed. I am the only one who pushed my boundaries. Nobody else noticed that I was pushing my own inner boundaries. They didn't sense that I was going into uncomfortable or, or possibly scary territory in myself. They just take me as who I am. And frankly, if they stick around, they're my people. They're the people I want to stick around.
