You'll be right in the first group of people with getting the goodies and the extras that go with it, including some opportunities for a personal Oracle card reading with me. All right, that's enough for what's going on in the world of Flow Dream land. Let's dig into this whole topic. Abused by a Narcissist so I'm going to start off by saying about a year ago I produced an Episode number 718, why Narcissists Love Empaths. And to my surprise it got a lot of traction, especially on YouTube and the comments were flying back and forth. So just I realized, ah, it's been a year, I probably need to step back in and give some further insights into this. This year has been kind of tremendous in the world of narcissistic awareness. This has been happening for a while, but the trend has been increasing. And I can say that no fewer than three of my private clients this year have been in recovery from a narcissistic relationship and they chose me frankly, to help them through it. And I know why. I did grow up myself in a narcissistic relationship with a stepfather for most of my childhood later on, followed by a very abusive boss and narcissistic abusive boss. And I've had some experiences in both realms and changing my thinking, changing my understanding of how the world works, the disillusionment, the loss of self esteem, all of that. I have been there and I've seen that and I felt very privileged to help these people kind of walk through that and, and come out the other side. So I'm going to share with you today some of the things that we've worked on together over the last year and offer you some guidance if you are. It doesn't really matter where actually you are in your journey, whether you are just thinking about getting out from under something or just realizing you're actually in something that's kind of icky and not normal, or whether you're out of it and yet you're still feeling like. I'm still climbing my. It's been a while and I'm still climbing my way out, all the way to the side of. I've been out for a while and I have never gone back in. No. No relationship for me. Every one of those spaces inside yourself is ripe for the next step. So I'll start with a commonality that I've noticed with a lot of people who've been with a narcissist. I'm not even going to bother really to define that because I think there's a lot of discussion out there. You get the general idea. But I will tell you, we don't talk as much about the kind of people that get with the narcissist. There's a lot of identification of who they are, but not necessarily who we are. And that's why I made a series of episodes here on the empaths that are attracted to narcissists and which narcissists actively seek out an empathic person. You have an awareness, you have a sensitivity, if you will, a super ability to feel into what other people are feeling, to know what they are thinking, to anticipate what their next action will be. And many of us, well, all of us obviously come with some degree of that skill. But many of us had our skills sharpened and honed at a much younger age than other people. We grew up in homes where there was abuse, emotional abuse, addiction abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse. We learn to read the room. And all that means is when you are in an environment where you have to figure out what's going on immediately, it means you are anticipating, you are empathically, emotionally, energetically aligning yourself, in essence, to the person who could potentially do you harm. And we do that because ultimately it keeps us safe. We know if it's a day to close the bedroom door and not come out for the rest of the evening or go over to a friend's house or whatever it may be. So we already have a natural tendency to be on alert for the narcissist. The narcissist, of course, realizes this back. Oh, this is a person who's going to read my every need and they're going to do something about it. I'm going to be able to direct them. I know. Please stay with me. It's tough. It gets better from here. But that's kind of the basis of where we're at now. The other side of being the way that we are as empathics and intuitives is we have a beautiful compassion and sensitivity to other people's feelings and to the world. We can often know what's happening before anybody else does. We are able to sense the swirls of feeling that pass between people or pass through workplaces. And we know it, and we have to build our own trust in that knowing. But once we do, our superpower is unrivaled. Yet some of us sometimes along the way, have gotten ensnared by the narcissist hiding around the corner of the building who somehow managed to grab us and take us along for a ride for a while. Before we go further, I want to emphasize I do not practice trauma therapy, and this is not a psychological podcast. I'm a spiritual counselor. I am a teacher of energy and manifesting and intuitive spaces. So what you're hearing from me is a perspective that's a little different than what you may hear from traditional psychology. I'm here to teach you how to move to the next step, move to the next place. There are other people who will teach you how to uncover the abuse, how to heal that abuse, and so forth. I'm looking forward, though, and I'm saying to you, if you're ready to acknowledge where you are and empower yourself, grip and re. Regain your own inner power, regain your faith in yourself, your confidence in yourself, your trust in yourself, and stop being afraid. Release the fear. Release the attentiveness to it. That's what we're here for today. So I'm going to tell you a little bit more about we empaths before I go in, because the intention here is I'm going to show you what I've done with some of my clients to help them step forward. We empaths are often very successful. We often find ourselves in really good careers. We're highly respected by our bosses, co workers. People say we have good game, right? Everybody likes us, and we can pull everybody together. And of course, we can do this because we feel everybody. We feel what everybody is feeling. And if they're hurting, then we hurt. Our goal is to make sure nobody is hurting. Everybody feels heard, everybody feels seen. Everybody feels valuable, because that's what I want to feel back inside myself. So we tend to be a little burnt out. We tend to have Pretty good careers and direction going. And yet we often have this little quiet thing hiding in the corner that we try not to drag out into the light unless absolutely necessary. And that is the relationship that we are in now or we have recently been in. And I'm not saying every empath is doing great at work or career, professional, etc, I just know that the last three or four that I've worked with have all fit this to a table. Very high powered. In this case, all women. Very high powered women. And so it became very curious. How is it that you can absolutely stand up, stand forward, just kill it at work, but when it comes to your home life, you're the one who's calling the police to protect you. What's going on here? We empaths tend to have a feeling that everybody thinks like we do and everybody operates like we do. It's a kind of built in trust. Well, I feel this way. Don't you feel this way? I'm a good person. Aren't you a good person? I tell the truth. Why wouldn't you tell the truth? We have to stretch our minds to start understanding. Other people don't operate like we do. And the, the beautiful assumption that we naturally give out that the trust that we give first. You don't earn my trust. You have my trust until you break it. Whereas other people are. You earn my trust and then you have it going back. This means that we feel that most people are like us. When we encounter someone who is asking for more than they give for someone who needs enormous amounts of control in order to feel valuable, we look to them and say, well, I guess you may have a good, must have a good reason for that because you must operate like me. You must really need that. I must give that to you. I must help you. I must shield you. I must heal you. I must not look at that because you don't want me to in or about you. I must not ask a question of you. I must not, you know, be unsure of the trust I have. This is why we also tend to think that life is fair and that the meritocracy really works. Now, I'm not being a Debbie Downer here. What I'm saying is we have been taught and we believe that if you work hard, you'll get ahead. If you are good to the person you're with, they will be good to you back. If you love them, they will love you. And again, it's a beautiful way to be and I don't want you to stop being that way. But What I do want you to understand is that this works for many people, but not all of them. It's the ones it doesn't work for that you're now growing this beautiful and gorgeous antenna to be able to spot and smell their stink from a mile away. So I want you to keep these best and beautiful superpower parts of yourself. But I also want you to realize that in the world of a narcissist, a meritocracy means nothing. And meritocracy means that if you do good, you'll be, you'll be promoted. If, if you're, if you are smart, you will go places. If you do this for me, then I will reward you with love and attention and long lasting help and, and care. This is not true for a narcissist. Narcissists always tell us, whether we're empathic or not, that our perception is wrong. They're always the first ones to turn things around and say whatever we're accusing them of or unsure about with them. No, they say that's actually you. As soon as a person does that with you, you can almost. I'd lay down money that I'm going to find a couple more clues within a few heartbeats that they're falling into the narcissistic realm. We call it gaslighting, but it's gaslighting. Plus it's saying that you've discovered something about me that I didn't want you to discover. So not only am I going to say that's wrong, but I'm going to turn it around and say, no, you're the one who's doing that. You're the one who's snooping through my phone. You're the one who's not trusting me. You're the one who is. And you know how we are. We want to believe because we're good people. And so we say, oh, maybe it is. Maybe I shouldn't have done that. You're right. I didn't extend trust. That was bad. Then they're going to go on and minimize whatever it is that you found. They're going to minimize whatever it is you've discovered. They're going to minimize whatever it is that you feel. And that is how they deal, period. So if you have been in a circumstance where you're being minimized, maybe this is at work. Maybe you're the one who's shouting alarms and saying, this is difficult and this is hard and this other person is not good and the other person is minimizing, minimizing, minimizing no, you're wrong. Maybe that's you. Can you see how this starts to make you feel like you're crazy? So if you are starting to feel like you're crazy, I want you to pause that, to hit the pause button. You're probably not crazy. You're probably feeling crazy because you're getting two cross currents of energetic information. The one is what you see and know to be true, and the other one is the person telling you that's not true, that's wrong. I'm going to minimize it. That's you. It creates a dizziness effect. And what we often do then is we simply kind of sink underneath it because it's really hard to hold for most of us. And I don't expect you to, but I do expect you to at least acknowledge, I feel dizzy and I feel confused. And that in itself is a sign that I am not in a clear, growth fueled, positive, love fueled relationship. We also want to believe in the best about others. That goes in the whole thing of everybody operates like us. We believe that everybody really is seeking to be a better person, to grow and expand and find truth. All the ideals and feelings we have, we assume others have as well. And what we do is because we are so used to being chameleons, you know, the little lizards that change their skin to blend in with their environment. It's a way of, you know, protecting oneself essentially in the, in the big world. For those little lizards, we do the same thing. So our nature is to align and understand things from a narcissist perspective first, because we have just changed our markings, our spots, to align with them. It's a protective measure. But the minute we stop aligning with them, we also start to see maybe they don't look for the best, maybe they're not looking out for me. Maybe they are just looking out for them. And there's a little bit of heartbreak in that feeling. I've had that happen multiple times when I said I had a boss who was a pretty profound narcissist. The moment I realized that they were not actually interested in the quality of my work, promoting me for my work, helping me, rewarding me for my work. And that if I did even better, like, my answer was, well, I'll just do better, I'll just do more, I'll just give more, I'll work longer, I'll stay more weekends. Doing better work was actually worse for me. In the end. My role with them should have been to do worse work, to pull back, to not be threatening to Say yes a lot more and I'm not thinking and I have no ideas. You have all the ideas. I didn't know that at the time because I believe that they were like me. I believed if I do more and give more, they'll see that and they'll think that's amazing and applaud me and give me more resources and then everybody goes up. So check in right now. Is that the kind of abuse you may be experiencing? Someone who is not feeling that way about you? One other way before we move into the next segment here is we often doubt that we can do things on our own, live on our own, succeed on our own. Now, not all of us feel this way, but even my most high powered corporate gals who are, who are making all the money in the relationship by the way, somehow end up with this feeling that but I can't do it without them. And it's almost unexplainable. You would think, you would think, obviously. But this, this isn't something that is rational. It's something where we are hearing over and over again, you can't do it, you're dumb. You need me, you should listen to me. That's not how we do it. We're going to do this other thing instead. You can't go there. You can't see that person. We get used to such a constant barf of this kind of information. It's like, you know, when people go to jail, you've heard about this called being institutionalized. At first they're in jail and they don't like it and they pick fights and they make big messes. But eventually it's such a wearing situation and they become what you call institutionalized. When they're let out of jail, they find themselves returning right back into jail because it's all they know. Even though they've desperately wanted to get out. It's what they know now. It's familiar. They know how to work in it and be in it. And many of us get conditioned in the same way. So we end up with this almost polarization inside of ourself. I'm strong and powerful here, but over here my life is pretty deeply controlled and I am placed in a little tiny box and told I'm not good unless I do X, Y and Z. This is classic narcissistic abuse in any context, in any relationship. So I want to help you understand how to heal past this and I'm going to give you some ideas. I might even split this up into two episodes. I'm thinking right Part one and two, because I have a lot of things that I do depending on where you are. First thing I want you to do, look at where you do lead, where are you leading? And ask yourself, why don't I feel that same way in this relationship? So I use the example of these kind of leadership roles in work, these C suite people, executives, entrepreneurs and so forth. Maybe, though, you actually lead in your family, maybe you lead among your siblings, maybe in your friend circle, you're the one people come to and ask for advice and look to. You have areas of yourself where you are strong and you are visionary and you are sought. Notice those areas. Notice the absence of the narcissist in those areas. Because those areas are representative of you. They are also part of you. They're an aspect of you. An aspect of you where you get to be empathic, where you get to show your leadership and all the good parts of it, the superpower of it gets to shine because you're not dealing with the one bad apple in the barrel. They're all good apples. So what you're giving out is great and it's being seen in a great way. Look where your skills and your ability and your empathic nature are shining. Notice that, because I'm going to ask you to use that as a point of contrast. See what I'm getting at? The more you recognize how powerful and what a good leader and how well liked, how well revered, how heard, how loved you are. In other areas, you're going to be able to. Now look at the one area where the person is saying, you're not good enough. You're still not good enough. There's something wrong with you. Why did you do that? Why are you checking up on me? Why are you doubting me? Why are you asking me for, you know, what I did with that money? Why are you. You're going to be able to look at that and say, that's so strange. This is the only area where I'm hearing that kind of feedback. And that's the first way that you can kind of partition this off and start to recognize it as something anomalous, meaning something strange. Strange and not congruent with the rest of what's going on in your life. See, often when we're with narcissists, they kind of blend in, right? Everything kind of smooshes together and we don't see the area where it's happening. But once we're able to view it and cordon it off, ah, now we've got something to work with. Once you see this, I want you to think about making sure you're in a safe space. This goes without saying. Safe spaces aren't just physical safe spaces, but maybe that's something you need as well. I'm talking about spiritually safe places, emotionally safe places. The more we're around that narcissist or the more control they have over us. Say you're in a workplace and it's your supervisor or a boss, for instance, the more we feel like we don't have a safe space. If we mess up, we're out. If we mess up, we lose our job. If we mess up, then our partner is going to leave us and take our children. If we mess up, that's an unsafe feeling. If you have any of those feelings right now, that right there is a huge red flag. Because when you're with somebody who's not a narcissist, you don't feel that way. You feel like, if I leave my job, my boss is going to say, we're really going to miss you, but I'm going to write you the best letter and I'm going to help you find. You know, if I have anybody I can network you with, please let me know. So you're looking for red flags like that. A place where you can think clearly and separately is what's required. As Virginia Wolf said, a room of one's own. And what this means is when you are under the influence of someone else's emotional, energetic, psychic, continuous, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. The sort of megaphone that narcissists tend to hold around us all the time they're drowning out. Imagine that they're standing there with a bullhorn in the bedroom all the time. You're not going to hear the birds outside. You're not going to hear people knocking at your door. You're not going to hear a lot of things because you can't hear it. They drown it out. So you want to give yourself moments, days, weeks perhaps, to be in places that are quiet now, narcissists are not going to like this. That's another red flag. The minute you say, I need two weeks to myself, they're going to say, what's wrong? I'm. It's all you. And you're going to leave me or I'm going to leave you and blow everything up and cow you. A non narcissist, on the other hand, would say, wow, I didn't realize that you were feeling this way. Take your time. I'm here for you. I'm not Going anywhere. I love you. Take whatever time you need. Use whatever resources you need. I want you healthy. I want you feeling right and good inside. Go ahead. So this might mean two weeks in a cabin on the seashore. This might mean going back home for a little while. This might mean any of half a dozen things. But you need space and you need quiet and you need moments to yourself. You need to be without the bullhorn. And at first your ears are ringing, right? You can't hear anything. But the days go on and now you're able to hear again. That's what we are looking for. Letting that new voice start to arise. The next thing I want you to notice your feelings. Now, maybe you have already left the situation. Maybe everything I'm saying is I did that. I got out of it. I'm getting out of it. I'm halfway out of it. Something tends to happen and this is related to the ears ringing. It's a kind of shell shock. It's a sense of I don't know fully how to heal this. I don't know fully how to trust myself again. I don't know fully how really release all of this fear and trauma and PTSD that this gave me. And yes, these situations absolutely can give you PTSD or cptsd. So what we end up doing is going into a holding position, a holding pattern. I don't think holding patterns are bad, frankly. If the airplane can't land because there's too much going on down there, then fine, let it circle in the sky for as long as it needs or can hold out right, with enough fuel. And many of my high performing empaths are in holding patterns right now because they have made the leap away and they've trusted themselves to get away, but they don't exactly know how to restart. They're afraid that the next person they run into who shows the interest and gets their heart pumping and makes them feel excited is going to be just like the last one. Because after all, they feel like I got myself into this, why wouldn't I just do it again? Maybe the very kind of people I'm attracted to are these people and there's just no getting around it. So I'm. My only option is to take myself out of the game again. We're going to look at that a little differently. There is a period of healing. Absolutely. And the healing may be lifetime healing. Some lessons keep reverberating in our minds. They're always there. But a different way of looking at it is to notice that even after you've left a narcissistic relationship. If you are still feeling curtailed about having another relationship, if you are still feeling that you're unable to or can't or afraid or don't trust yourself to, that in itself is an indicator that the abuse is still to some degree continuing. And what I mean by that is the narcissist is long gone, but you're still holding the fearful result of what you went through. Therefore, they're not really gone. They're still there because they're controlling your actions and your ability to love or not love. Once you have that awareness, your next commitment is to say to yourself, I no longer let them make me be afraid of my own decisions and actions and attractions. I also release that. So at this point, you may be asking, what do I do? Like, okay, great, I see all this stuff, right? And by the way, I guess I will have to split this into two episodes because I've only gotten through four out of 14 points for how I'm working with my clients to bring them into this fully healed, recovered, light state, where, again, this beautiful heart that they have is their superpower and their strength. We do, and we can get there. So the four ideas that I've just given you are, in of themselves, part of the healing. And a lot of them have to do with the awareness, the initial awareness. Because once you have the awareness, this is what the whole idea of limiting beliefs is based on, right? You don't know you have a belief that's limiting you. If you did, you wouldn't, you know, you wouldn't have it, you'd gladly give it up. But the thing is, they're invisible. So these are in essence, the limiting beliefs that we have around this kind of relationship that we have been in or been exposed to, or in my case, not one. I chose one I had to be in in my family. But nonetheless, I took away a lot of lessons from it. Perhaps you did, too, with a parent or someone else. So this initial awareness is number, number, number one. Now, in the next episode that I do here, I'm going to go through the remaining pieces, more strategies that you can include. And you don't use them all at once like I suggested earlier. You use them at different points when you're still with somebody or in the environment, versus when you're newly escaped from that environment, versus when you've been away for a while from that environment. There's three distinct stages here and different things we do in each. But one thing you can do right now, aside from the awareness that I just shared with you. And I hope a lot of that was really validating because that's one thing that we need more than anything, actual validation. Another. Another person that we listen to or admire telling us straight up, this is real and true and weighty and truthful. And when we can say, oh, I have a counterweight now, I have someone else that I can believe, everything changes. Instead of hearing just that one bullhorn, we're now hearing someone else, another voice. So this is really important for you. Find the voice. If I'm the voice, I love it. Thank you. If it's someone else, find that other person. And then you begin the inner work. This inner work is not just about revelation, right? And therapy is really good at revelation. But I'm talking about the healing and the rebuilding. Now. The healing and the rebuilding is where the true, heavenly, delicious work comes in. This is where you're able to state and say and feel and flow, dream and envision. I am worthy. I am lovable. I am hot stuff. I am adorable. I am intelligent. I can easily take care of myself. The world is rewarding me and will continue to reward me. And anybody who's in my life needs to earn my love and appreciation. And they need to earn it every day. And anytime they bring me confusion or self doubt, I either look at myself and ask, is that true? But if it's a continuous thing, I look at them and say, why do you need me to always be in a place of doubting myself? Hmm. Because I've healed past that and that just doesn't sit with me anymore. And as a result, you're boring. And this is when you start to really begin to trust yourself that, no, you're not going to get with another one. No, you're not going to end up in another workplace like that. No, you're different. You've changed. And that, perhaps is the last key takeaway here. Your narcissist is never going to change. The narcissistic workplace is never going to change. It is what it is. They don't have any reason. There's no compelling need for them to be different than they are as long as they're getting what they need from people like you or the people around them. But who can change is you. And once you do, they're like leaves falling away in the wind. You will simply not have them in your life anymore. You will not even encounter them in your sphere, in your world anymore. And the moments when you do encounter them, you'll smell them a mile away, like a Big open clove of garlic. The vampire. You'll be like, I smell what is. Oh, my. I know that. God. Nope. By the way, I love garlic. I shouldn't have used garlic. But what I'm saying is it'll be so obvious to you there won't be anything there. And the narcissist will also look at you and they'll instantly realize, this person is not going to give me what I'm looking for. They're not going to. They're not going to respond the way I need them to. They're not going to feel the way I need them to. They're not going to give me their power the way I need them to. They're just not going to. So I'm going on for easier pickings. And that will happen. So I encourage you. You're on the path of healing already. Just the fact that you listened, if you listen this far, you're already on the path of healing because you've realized there are people in my life. And by the way, not every narcissist is this huge giant grinch boogeyman. You can have people who are slightly on the spectrum of narcissism, but enough to be a constant grind, right? That's that person in your family who is always somehow having a problem and it's all about them. And it's like could can be in a much smaller way that doesn't impact you daily, but still you can heal from them. And in so doing, you heal yourself. And in so doing, it's sort of like you heal them right out of your world in many cases. So resources that you can start playing with. And like I said, I still will have another episode. I just didn't want this one to go on forever. But I would love for you to go to flowdreaming.com look for the flow dream called Strong Healthy Boundaries.
