BONUS: Joy Is Not a State of Mind—It’s a State of Being with Lisa McCourt
29 Jan 2026 · 38 min
Lisa McCourt argues joy is a baseline state of being, not happiness, blocked by early beliefs. She offers 12 keys to reclaim it, including observer-self work, reframing thoughts, and shadow work around judgment. The Joy School teaches exercises like "walk around the statue" and "be wrong" to access natural joy.

Two things come to mind when we think about the word joy.
One, Christmas angels and carols.
And two, a feeling that feels fleeting and usually unattainable. It's a bird that will fly from us all too quickly.
So what if I said you can.

And I hope move your thoughts into a space of.
Huh, Maybe I should try that. Hmm, I hadn't really thought about that before because that's one of the things we do here in Flow Dreaming, still kind of Woo Woo.

You already know about my Flow dreaming and me school and all of that. So it's with a del that I get to bring on a very old friend of mine. Her name of course, like I mentioned already, is Lisa McCourt. And what we are going to do.
Is introduce you to the fact that joy is not out of reach. Even though it may sound like the angels singing in the heavens so far away from me in my little life. What if it's not? So, without further ado, I'm gonna bring Lisa and I On as we share a pretty darn cool conversation.
Lisa, I am delighted to have you with us today. I just told everybody all about you and they are eager to hear all about creating and feeling and becoming joyful in their.
Hello. Hello. Hi, darlin. Well, if they're your people, they know a lot about it already.
We are committed to creating happiness and manifesting it. In my world, you have. First of all, I have known you for so many years, so I know this is going to be a great conversation. Your mission in life is to get people into a state of joy and happiness, to pivot their whole direction to make that their number one priority. Why is it so important for you to help people with joy?
Yeah, I love the way you phrase that. Because I think that everything that we think that we want, whatever we say we're wanting to create or do or have, it's all just because we want more joy, more happiness. Right? And the joy school perspective is not really about creating it or manifesting it or chasing it or finding it. It's just about peeling away those obstructions we all have to the natural joy that we are. That's like the cornerstone of the whole joy school philosophy is just understanding that we are joy and love and bliss at our core, every one of us. That's what we came here as. That's the field that we came from. And we just gather up all these obstructions along our journey. So it's really about identifying and skillfully learning how to gently put aside those obstructions so that the joy that we are can just be there, be more of a felt experience in our lives.
I like how you repositioned what I said, because I realized as you answered, I was making it sound like we have to work toward joy, which is kind of an oxymoron, right? If you're working on something, it often isn't very joyful.
And yet it's true. It's true because it does require our attention. It does require some commitment because we're all so habituated, right? We have these grooves worn in our humany brains, our default reactivity, that it does take some energy. Energy, some commitment, some requirement of us spending our attention on putting all that aside, finding ways to part the seas so that our natural joy can come up. So I don't think it's inaccurate to say we have to work at it. It's just. Yeah, it's all semantics, I guess.
Well, okay, so speaking of semantics, definitions, please. The difference between joy and happiness, I mean, aren't they interchangeable? I know you're going to say no?
You know I'm going to say no. Yes.
So.
Happiness, you know, we all want happiness, and there's nothing wrong with wanting happiness. And it's a beautiful state and it's one of the natural emotions inherent to us human creatures. Joy, the way we define it at Joy School is a baseline state that is just a rightness and a comfort with all of the emotions available to us on that spectrum. So we can be angry or grieving and have a healthy release in our anger and our grief that has an undercurrent of joy. We could be sad and feel a poignant opening in our heart space from being sad. So joy is a baseline state that we can actually encompass all the time, no matter what else we're feeling. Because all of those things that we consider are challenging emotions, they're really only causing us suffering when we push against them and deny them and judge them. And when we get really accepting with wherever we are at any given moment in time, there's an undercurrent of joy that can run through all of that. It.
Mmm, beautiful. You're reminding me already. I. I already mentioned to everybody that your book is coming out Free youe Joy.
And they should pre order it, by the way.
But you have a, what you call them, keys, right? The keys to joy. The 12 keys. Yeah, chapter four, feel to heal. Something you wrote struck me in there that we all want to believe our thoughts, but you say you cannot believe your own thinking. And just something you said reminded me when we believe our own thinking, is that one of the impediments to just getting into that baseline joy? How do thoughts disrupt the joy?
Yeah, for sure. It's like we arrive here, these bundles of love and joy and pure potentiality. We arrive here in this human suit and right away we have this biological imperative to want to make sense of this crazy time and space that we've landed in. So we start asking, how is it here? And because of energetic cues that we get from our parents and our society and sometimes our church and our upbringing, we start to form definitions about life. What does money mean? What does love mean? What does power mean? What is my place in it all? And these really, really, really early formed beliefs, we call them bucket beliefs. In Joy School, we're programmed to just continue to find evidence for whatever early, early, early definitions we came up with. So we're basically babies without emotional maturity, without logic, and we come to these conclusions and we're wired to find evidence to support these conclusions all along our journey. And for many of us, I'm going to go ahead and say most of us, the conclusions that we came to early on are not serving our joy, and they're not really accurate. And then we have this filter that gets created, this tangly web of beliefs, and that's what we're seeing the world through. So none of us is even remotely seeing objective reality. Objective reality is a unicorn. There's nobody observing objective reality. We're all just observing the world through this tangly filter of beliefs that's based in bull crap, right? It's based in really illogical conclusions that we came to at a really early age. So learning that at least learning that our negative thoughts, which most people are thinking most of the time, are based in bullcrap, that's what can really allow us to start challenging our thinking in a way that is opening to our joy.
You know, I had the funniest image.
Pop in my mind as you were talking.
I love your images when you said, I know I'm full of them when you are striving to find evidence for your conclusions. And I had this flash of the high school essay where all you're being.
Taught for like, four years is, give.
Me some evidence for your thesis. Give me evidence. And you're like, you're right. Everything is just wiring us to, explain this to me, explain this to me, explain this to me. Make it be right, make it be unchallengeable. But then we get cornered with beliefs that we definitely want to challenge and then let go of.
Absolutely. I always quote Joe Dispenza's numbers on this, that there are 400 billion bits of information available to us in any given moment, right around us, just surrounding us at all times. And our puny little human brains have evolved to actually let through and absorb and register about 50 bits of information. So how are we going to decide which 50 bits to let through? It's going to be the ones that already correspond to those erroneous beliefs we set up when we were really young. It's mind blowing to consider that we're all just seeing the world through a keyhole and none of our keyholes are lined up the same. But we so are invested in being right about whatever we've decided because that makes us feel safe. But it's a false sense of safety because it just keeps us focused on things that we don't want and believing things that are not even making us happy. We'd rather be right than happy. We'd rather be right about our beliefs than open up the keyhole. To see all these other bits of information that could be, like, just exploding our minds with joy and love and passion for this crazy world that we live in.
I love that image. Seeing the world through a keyhole. I might adopt that.
I love your images.
I put that in my vocabulary.
Thank you.
Thank you. You know, I'm an image collector. I'm a metaphor collector.
So that one's going in my collection. Book. Awesome. I love that about you. Yeah.
Okay, so here we are, starting to dismantle. I'm going to walk myself through the process here with you. I am starting to dismantle the things that I've thrown up the walls, the beliefs, the filter that prevent me from experiencing pure, unadulterated joy within every experience. Okay, say I've chosen that. What is the first thing that I'm going to do?
Well, the first thing you're going to do is make a flow. Dream about it. You mean, like, the average person?
You know, me, lady. Okay, so. All right.
Well, there are steps. I didn't call them the 12 steps, because that's kind of taken. I call them the 12 keys, but they really do, like, sequentially build one upon the other. And it's really initially about becoming the observer, Right? Just having that little bit of detachment from our reactivity, from our identification with our thoughts so that we can observe what's going on. And that's a skill that requires some effort. And we have different steps along the process to hone that skill. But I use a lot of Eckhart Tolle terminology in Joy School. That was one of my primary teachers. And he hasn't used this lexicon in many years. But when I was really immersed in his teacher trainings, he talked about, we all have a horizontal self and a vertical self. The horizontal self being our name, our body, our affiliations and beliefs and family placement and gender, and all of these things that we are walking around presenting as on the planet at this time is our horizontal self. And additionally, every one of us here, even though we like to ignore it, we have a vertical self. We have our soul self, our spirit, our connection to source. So we start observing our horizontal selves from the position of our vertical selves. And it's just a skill like anything else. The more you do it, the better you get at it. And it's just a subtle repositioning where most of us have been trained up to focus exclusively on our horizontal selves and making things happen out here in our external world. And just that slight repositioning where we Start to bring our vertical selves a little bit more into the forefront of our existence. Creates ripple effects that just go out into our vibratory frequency. Gets sent out there in a whole different way. We start seeing the little miracles, the synchronicities, the things popping, popping up and I think I might have lost track of your original question, but the first step is really one of observing, observing our default thinking patterns. And start making subtle adjustments in there.
Okay, so here we are observing our default thinking patterns. My next step then is to say, if joy is supposedly my natural default state, why am I not always experiencing it?
Like what happened?
Why doesn't it just push its way through constantly?
Right, yeah, that's the thing. It wants to. Right. Our cork wants to float. Anytime that we're not feeling perfectly serene and joyful and kind of just blissful in our existence here, it's because one of those beliefs that we formed early on is blocking our view of the joy that is our birthright. So then it becomes a discernment practice. What am I believing right now? Whatever is bugging the shit out of me over there. What is the story that I'm making up about it? Right? Looking at, we think that these events in our world cause our feelings, but it's really a three step process, right? An event happens, somebody says that rude thing, the promotion doesn't come through, the kid gets sick and has to stay home from school. The thing happens out here. And then we, as it goes through that tangly filter of our beliefs, we make up a story about it, make up what this means, and then we have a feeling about that. So when we can get really aware of that three stage process, we can start looking at, where did this story that I'm making up come from? And how can I open my keyhole a little bit to see what other stories might be available here we have an exercise like walk around the statue. So whatever this event is, whatever this thing is that's troubling us, pulling down our vibration, making us unhappy, happy, let's make it a statue and walk around it. Because we're looking at the front of the statue, we see all the details, we think we've got the whole thing nailed. We've got it figured out just by what we're looking at. But until we start walking around it, we don't have the opportunity to see other perspectives, other bits of the 400 billion bits of information that might be really conducive to us having a whole new perspective on this thing.
I love that exercise. It's immediately calling to mind. I have a similar one. It's called the be wrong exercise, where I ask everyone to suddenly be flat out wrong about something they believe in. And people fight against it, they defend it and defend it. And I'm like, why this thing is not serving you? Why would you be defending this thing? Be wrong about it. And it's like we're so reluctant to let go of something that has explained our misery to us. You know, it's like, if I don't have that thing that explains my misery, what then do I have? And I'm like, that's the point. You want to get to that point where you don't have anything and you go back into that floaty, blank, open child mind space and you can put something new there and you can maybe discover that you actually were indeed wrong. But you have to first allow yourself to be wrong.
That's so beautiful. It's true. We don't want to be wrong and we're so conditioned for that. Like, think about in school. If you have the right answer, you get praise and gold stars and advancement and all the respect. And if you get the answer wrong, you're shamed and ridiculed. And you know, I mean, we're so committed to these, these ideas that aren't serving our joy. I love that. Be wrong. Just be wrong about that.
Exactly. This also brings up another one of your keys. You have a section in here about judgment. And I was thinking about what you were saying about be the observer. Can you talk into that a little bit? Like be the observer of our own selves, Step back and see ourselves or walk around the statue. But we also are constantly judging others. How do these play together?
Yeah, people don't like to hear this, but all judgment is judgment of self, right? This is shadow work. This is, you know, whatever. We're pointing our finger out, you know, at out there and saying this is just troubling to me. It's horrible. I hate this. It's where we're judging a particular trait or attribute or characteristic that's just part of the spectrum of humanness. We all have the entire spectrum of the human condition within us. Right? We all have it within us. Where we're judging it out there is usually where we in our past. And this is often beneath the level of our conscious awareness, where we have been judged, where we felt judged by our families or whatever entities were contributed to our self criticism and our self judgment. And so we don't want to own it within ourselves. So we look out there and put it on somebody else. But always with shadow work, there's like a basic understanding that trips a lot of people up that if I'm judging my co worker for being selfish, it means that I'm selfish. No way. I'm the most selfless, altruistic person in the world. So there's no way this shadow work makes sense. And in a case like that, it's not as basic as it can sometimes appear. Where oh yeah, I'm judging that person's laziness because I really judge myself when I'm lazy. That's like a very straightforward presentation of how it can show up. But in the case where like that person is so selfish and I'm so unselfish, it's just sort of showing us where we're a little bit out of balance with a particular characteristic on the human spectrum. So probably if you're judging, judging, judging that other person for being selfish, it's a gentle reminder that you could be a little more self honoring, that you could take care of yourself a little bit better, set better boundaries. It's almost like a jealousy of that person over there who's being so forthright in having their needs met by the world when you know you are not having your needs met by the world. So there are some subtle nuances to it, but, but really that's where our judgments come from. And as we love ourselves better, which is the whole underlying everything that happens in joy school is we just learn to love ourselves better, the judgments of others just naturally fall away.
Yeah.
You know, you brought up the word selfish a lot. And I only recently became aware. I had this little online quiz I was running and a lot of the answers that were coming in just in a nutshell, were centering around the I am not worthy of this, yet I am not worthy of success or joy. And it was sort of, it really opened my eyes. I am not worthy is sort of like saying because I couldn't conceive of being so selfish, I can't make it about me. I'm not good enough yet. I can't. If I focus on me now, I'm being this selfish being and not giving and then I'm even less worthy. And I know you talk into that a lot like becoming joyful is not a selfish thing. How do you explain that?
Yeah, I mean, the first eye opener is to realize whatever degree of joy you're experiencing in your life right now, when you look out at your life on a day to day basis, whatever level of joy you're experiencing is the precise measure of what you deep down believe you deserve. That's just bottom line, energy. That's how it is and that's challenging for people. But once we get really clear on that, and it's easy to see how, you know, we're always creating based on the energy we're putting out there, we're always creating based primarily on our deep down expectations. So if we don't expect more joy, if we don't feel that we deserve on every level to have more joy, there's no way the universe can co create it with us, no matter what we're doing or how many affirmations we're saying. Right. So I would love for people to just want it for themselves to love themselves that much, to know that they deserve this beautiful joyful existence. But for so many of us, that trips us up. So I like, like to additionally remind everybody that we are vibrational beings in a vibrational universe. We are energy swimming in a sea of energy. And energy affects energy. So our baseline state, the vibratory signature that we're putting out there is affecting every single person in our lives, our inner circle, the kid who makes our deli sandwich, the guy who steps onto the elevator with us, every person that we encounter, everybody that sees our social media or reads our emails that they're being affected by our energy. It is the most unselfish thing that you can do. You being every listener out there, to up level your own vibration because that will just naturally lead to an up level to everybody that you encounter throughout your day.
Yeah, I 100% agree. I always tell people personal growth is the most benevolent and giving thing you can do for others. And they scratch their heads. What do you mean? If I focus on myself and my needs, I'm like, you're literally making yourself a better person. And what are you giving to other people every day? You, you're the greatest gift. Make yourself great. Give the best. So go back in and do that. It feels like sort of a similar, a similar message. Yeah.
It's like your, your spouse, your partner, they're tired of you looking to them for your joy. Your kids, your friends, your parents. Nobody needs that burden of contributing to your happiness. It's an inside job. You be the fountain that's going to just like spread that sunshine out all over them.
Well said. Let's all pause for a second and.
Just take that in.
Like literally, it's an inside job. It is not their job to give this to you.
Yeah.
Nor is it your job to give it to Them, if you give them joy, it's because you're co experiencing joy together. Right. And that's another thing like joy, it doesn't feel like a zero sum game. And I think people sometimes think if I focus on my needs then I'm going to be taking away from someone else's needs. But it doesn't work like that. Nope.
No. Then you're just filled up from the inside and you have so much just to spill out all over them.
Okay, so speaking about spilling joy into everyone's lives, our family, our friends, our co workers, what does a joyful life look like? One that sustains us and is there constantly? Because you know, there's a lot of potholes in this road of life and, and if you bounce through them too fast, it doesn't feel joyful. How do you create this continuity and sustain it?
Yeah, I think sustainable is really the key word there because we've all had joy. We all know that there's maybe some joy around the corner for us. Most of us have some upcoming event or possibility or thing that we're hanging all our joyful hopes on and that's just a ever morphing carrot dangling at the end of the stick. Right. The stuff that we think is gonna bring us joy is always just morphing and changing. And none of that is really what's to make us happy. It's what we through our limited little keyhole have identified as an out there thing that I'm going to put all my joy in that basket. But it's really about your inner landscape. Your inner landscape is creating your outer landscape all of the time. So figuring that out, getting to the point where we have this inner landscape of joy is really what creates the outer landscape anyway. We always say we travel two parallel paths in joy school. The first path is about learning the art of sustainable non reactivity and peace and inner bliss. And then the second path is, or the parallel path is manifesting all that stuff we want out there, but not for the reason that we think. Not because we need all these things to make us happy. Because really that's not what's making us happy, it's the other way around. It's like our inner peace. Our joy is what's going to create these circumstances out here which are just fun because we're here to do a human life and that means wanting stuff and creating it. That's just fun. This is like the game that we play is all this manifestation stuff that we do, but it's about finding that inner joy and inner peace, which is really just an adjustment of our habitual thought patterns. And it's not an easy or overnight job to all those well worn grooves of thought and habitual reactivity. But it's not impossible either, right? Is it easy to break habits? No, but people do it all the time. It's really just about bringing a commitment and patience and lightness with ourselves to switch up the way that, that default thinking looks. And it doesn't mean that nothing bad is ever going to happen to us again. And I think that some people think, well, if I get my inner landscape just right, then I'm not going to ever attract challenging situations again. And then there's also that we don't want anybody to feel self blame or recrimination if they've attracted something into their life that's, that's majorly challenging. We don't want anyone to feel like, oh, I did that with my energy. Because most of our challenges really are here to serve us. And looking in hindsight, we can usually see how our challenges have served us. So it's not about stepping into this problem free existence. We're still going to have stuff come up. We're just going to approach it from a higher perspective. We're going to approach all of our challenges from sort of a eagerness in seeing what can be learned from this, what can be, how can I grow from this? So it's not like we're going to suddenly never have a problem again. We're going to have problems, we're just going to view them and approach them very, very differently from how we have in the past.
So that's where I'm thinking right back to the beginning when you talked about, you know, I said, what's the first thing to do if I'm, if I'm embarking on this, I've made a decision, I'm going to start to live in this state. And you said start to get to know your observer self.
Right.
So when you have these things come up, the observer self comes up and the observer self says, I see what's going on, but I choose to feel. Or what, what then? What's the next piece to that?
There are some, some metaphors and I share a lot of people's work in the book. I love collaboration, as you know. I love shouts outs to my various teachers and friends and collab. And what's coming to mind with that question is an example that Rupert Spira teaches where it's really kind of a high level consciousness perspective where you recognize that everything that's going on out there. It's sort of a movie. And we're the projector, right? We're projecting this movie onto the screen. And he uses an analogy about like you're sitting there watching a blank TV screen, and your friend comes in and says, what are you doing? And you say, hey, I'm just. Just sitting here looking at this screen. The next day, you're sitting in the same position, but the TV's on. And your friend comes in and says, what's going on? And you say, oh, my God, Marjorie's husband killed her. And there's a clown under the bed, but she doesn't know. And you spin this whole story because you're caught up in the movie, right? So the friend says, it looks to me like you're just sitting there looking at a screen like yesterday. And we develop the skill of noticing that we're just watching this movie with the full understanding that something in us, in our spirit, self directed and wrote this movie for our benefit somehow. And it becomes about just sort of detaching a little bit from the screen. I talk about how I pretend I have this kind of fancy TV where I not only can turn down the volume, but I can kind of blur out the images a little bit just to help with that detachment. And there's a rewind button where I can go backwards and look at it again and try to learn from it. And it just becomes this way of interfacing with the world that allows you not to get caught up in the movie. And then for me, and I always say, this isn't Rupert or Eckhart or any of the other teachers that I teach, but this is just my own little thing, is there are times when I want to get lost in the movie. I love the humany stuff here. I love the pleasures of the flesh. I love reveling and the tastes and the sounds and the sensations. So there are times when I choose to lose myself in the movie. And then when something's triggering me or someone's trying to break my heart, I have the capacity to pull back and realize, okay, what. What is this movie that I directed here all about? Let me. Let me detach a little bit, turn down the volume, blur out the images a little bit, and just go in there and figure out what, what. What I was trying to teach myself when I made this movie.
I'm like, give me Downton Abbey any day. Any day.
I know that's an older show now, but I would love. I love Getting Lost. It's so true. And yet there are other movies that I turn off. Like I'm like, nope, not for me. Nope, nope, nope, nope. Not happening. Okay, Lisa, so you I want to mention some of the resources because undoubtedly you have intrigued some people with this conversation. Oh yes, yes. Go listen to my interview there and hope you enjoy it. Lisa. So fabulous. So wonderful as always speaking with you. I mean I Hope. And please do, because Lisa is here to guide you in that direction.
Oh, that's beautiful. So beautifully spoken.

Me school.
You've heard me talk about it, mention it, and I'm just wondering when it might be a fit for you, when you might jump to the next level, which is going from maybe listening to the flow dreams and playing with them or listening to this podcast and saying there is a next point from here. And I've been kind of playing around the same area for quite a while and I'm ready. I'm ready to see what else there is. And maybe you're nervous and scared. You don't know how much it costs. You don't know what happens there. You don't know what will happen for you there. Look, don't be. Just don't be scared. Mi school is the most beautiful thing I think I have made in my life, but it's the most beautiful thing because I take you, really you people just like you, into the program and I take all the learning that I. I have been blessed with, that I have been mentored with. And I have been mentored and blessed with some pretty amazing people in my life. And my job is to carry this information forward to then pass it on to you. And what we pass on is how to live well, how to be you, authentically you, how to live in to who you are, who you came here to be, how to find that, how to move through your ceilings and blocks and blossom. You know, you're probably looking at this next big chunk of your life and wondering what's going to be there, what's.
Going to be in it?
Is it going to be the same.
As it was before?
Well, for it to be different, you need to start choosing yourself, you need to invest in yourself. You need to invest in your growth. You need to consciously say, I'm ready, it's time, I'm ready now. That's what we do in MI school. We spend that time and that's what we look at. Personal power, your ability to generate wealth, security, time, freedom. We look at your emotional self. Are you in love with yourself? Are you in love with life? If you're not, let's make that happen. It's just a question of whether you say yes or whether you say no yet again. So jump on over to my website, flowdreaming.com and you'll find there a link.
