Summer McStravick explores ADHD and empathic intuition as both challenges and gifts. She shares personal insights on neurodiversity and offers coaching programs for listeners interested in personal growth and manifesting.
Adhd, empathic intuition. And you. Well, maybe not you. Maybe somebody you know, somebody you love. Pretty sure there's probably somebody in your life that you would be like. Yeah, Yep, yep. Definitely adhd. Well, I. I've been. I've been spending a lot of time recently understanding neurodiversity in a much deeper level after some late diagnoses in my own family. And I wanted to share with you today what it means when your mind travels from thing to thing as effortlessly as a butterfly between flowers. And what it feels like to channel your intuition into discrete funnels as a result. I'll explain this later, more in the episode. So we're going to be talking essentially about pros and cons of having that amazingly agile and flexible mind, that mind capable of absorbing maybe 10 times what others do at certain times. But that same absorption ability can weigh you down to the ground and halt you in a spin of overwhelm and paralysis. So let's explore what being empathically intuitive as an ADHD is actually like. Flow Dreaming.
Still kinda woo Woo is just what it sounds like. An escape into the world of woo. Also a ride into you and how to feel happier, wiser and more self aware in every way. It's your ultimate journey into personal growth and inner power. We'll explore ideas like how your energy self influences the kinds of opportunities you encounter, or how your personal growth can drive your business growth, or even how that feeling of being stuck is really always coming from something else. We just have to figure out what. That's right. We're a dash of woo woo. A sprinkle of self care, a heap of problem solving and pattern busting, and a giant cup of encouragement. We're going to relight so much passion, purpose, self love and confidence in you that you practically stagger. I'm Summer McStravik, your host and welcome to Flow Dreaming. Still kinda woo woo.
All right, so what I'm sharing with you today is kind of a working theory. As you all know, I am trained as a success coach, spiritual coach, empathic intuitive medium. Yes, a lot of different boxes, but therapist is not yet one of them. That said, I am enrolled in the potential to add that one to my little ticker tape box as well. So this is very preliminary, but it's got me thinking. A lot of the learning that I've been doing has jogged some real deep thinking in my mind about why certain personality types or people with certain abilities or conditions or neurodifferences can somehow do things empathically. Maybe even more Easily or maybe get more bogged down by them. I just wanted to go in and see. So bear with me as we just kind of unpack and explore some things that I've noticed. So, first of all, people with ADHD oftentimes seem to have very strong intuitive abilities. And maybe that's related to the way that the ADHD brain actually processes information. The ADHD mind tends to make tons of connections between multiple concepts. It creates this connected library of information that continuously grows over time. Your ADHD person has 15 million interests. Your ADHD person has noticed 5,000 things in the room and strangely enough, not noticed the biggest thing in the room. But this tendency toward a connected thinking style, I do think helps some neurodiverse people access more information than just what's in front of our eyes. So neurologically, you could also maybe think that maybe this enhanced intuition in some people. Not every ADHDer, for sure. But it might be explained by the differences in simply your neuroplasticity, your connectivity, your neurotransmitter function. The ADHD mind also shows this increased connectivity in neural networks involved in creativity, divergent thinking, thinking outside the box, et cetera, right? These fluctuations that we have in dopamine levels, they can contribute to this rapid onslaught of generating ideas and insights, which is often also characteristic of intuitive thinking. Stuff that just comes to you, stuff that just is there, you just see that you just want to run after. I also wonder if ADHD adults, I'm primary talk primarily talking about adults, but I'm sure kids and adolescents can fall into this too. But I think another reason that they may have this kind of extra sense, as we call it, right, the empathic sense, is that ADHD have different filtering abilities, right? An average brain, it manages to filter maybe information down to 40 bits per second, sensory information, stuff coming in. But the ADHD brain experiences the opposite. It's an overload. It's sort of like when you put one of those pressure gauges on your watering system or your house water. I had to do this recently in my garden. It kept blowing all the hoses off because I didn't put on a PSI regulator. Think of it like an ADHD doesn't have a psi regulator. Most people do. So this might allow some of us to notice things that others naturally just filter out. The extra layer of information is always there. But on the other hand, this ADHD brain can be overwhelmed with sensory information. It can struggle with executive tasks, but at the same time, it's noticing more. So it's this limbo Of I see so much, but I can't get it corralled into the tasks that I need it to do. Imagine if you had a nervous system that allows in more noise, that allows for more data to continuously be coming into you, but it's not always perfectly evaluated or screened. And so we end up in a paralysis, we end up in flighting or flitting from thing to thing. We end up holding a bunch of information and not knowing what to do with it exactly or precisely. Or conversely, we do know what to do with it. We launch into it, we say, this is it, this is mine. This feels so good. This feels so great. I, I'm definitely going to pick up becoming an organic gardener this season. No, wait, I'm definitely going to pick up ice skating. No, wait, I'm definitely going to start researching deeply this one television show's history and all the actors in it. No, wait. And on we go as an empath. And if you have adhd, here's what's happening with you. You're receiving a layer of continuous information. It does not stop. It is live. It's 24 7, and you've already been getting so much input from everything around you, and you're already trying to parse what you're getting and, and keep everything in its own line, you know, its own channel. So as an empath, on the one hand, you may be naturally quite open to that, that sensory and that, that additional input, that empathic, intuitive input, but it may also be equally hard to filter it to, to bring it down. Now, if you've ever had that circling in your brain, I. Years ago, I named this mind spin after encountering a lot of people with what I call mind spin. A thought that just goes round and round and round, round, round, round situation that plays over and over and over and over, never leading. Any place gets stuck. It's sort of like you take all the energy, you don't know what to do with it, so you just put it on circle. You just, you just put the, you just press the go button on the dryer. Just like, I don't know what to do with this. So we're just going to circle with it till the energy dies down. Can be so frustrating for us. But on the other hand, God, it's such a beautiful gift. I mean, imagine if you were wanted to paint and you were an okay painter, and then somebody says, no, actually you're exceptional. You'd say, what? I am? Yeah. Why haven't you ever painted? I don't know. I just Couldn't keep track of all the colors until now. So what I'm getting at is your potential is kind of extraordinary, but it's a little bit different. Go bigger, but spend more time on, on condensing and channeling because the information unfortunately will not stop. As far as I know, there's really no way to prevent it from continuing to reach us as empaths. A lot of ADHDers try, right? Get depressed, take some pills, drink some beer or wine, or binge on TV shows or shopping. We try all these other ways to, to get the information to go away. Some people call it numbing, but I just look at it like that's kind of a mean thing to say. Yes, it is numbing, but we're trying to just get the information to go away. But what if instead we embrace that information and learn to use it and work with it? A lot of people with ADHD are also very brilliant, very smart, and they don't complain about that part of it. They're grateful. They're like, oh, thank you, thank you. You gave me this one thing that's hard to deal with and, but you gave me this other thing that's I'm so smart. It's kind of like the trade off we get sometimes, right? And I'm being very careful here to not position this as something that's a detriment. I happen to personally, my personal beliefs are ADHD is a, a kind of boon. It's a, it's a beautiful skill set if used wisely. And if one is taught how to use it correctly, it's like having tremendous musical ability but never being taught how to use it. That would be very frustrating your whole life and inefficient and not productive and perhaps make you angry or depressed. But learn to use it and wow, there you go. World's your oyster. So if you, if you've ever felt like there's a part of my brain that just sees too much, does too much, thinks too much, goes too many places, goes from one thing to another, on and on. Ask yourself, am I intuitive as well? And what is my unique way of putting those two differences inside me together? By the way, I don't think being empathic and intuitive is necessarily a difference. I don't see ADHD as it is. It's hard to describe. Yes, they're all differences. A person with sports ability and art ability are different, but they're still cool abilities no matter what you've got. So ask yourself, what is my intuitive ability and how do I uniquely Embrace that. And given who I am, and maybe you've never been formally diagnosed with adhd, it's just kind of like, oh, my kid was. My dad was. If you've got. If you've got some people in your family, you definitely need to take a look at yourself. It's one of those things that doesn't usually just spontaneously erupt out of nowhere and many, many people. And I'm going to speak as a woman here who was born in the 70s. Oh, my God, I admitted it to the whole world. Yes, you guys, I'm old. Nothing was. We were just like. Nobody ever thought a woman had adhd. It was just not a thing at all. And that continued for many decades. So if you find yourself being a woman who maybe was never seen that way, you. You were a space head, an airhead, a space case. If you were sometimes told to calm down, just calm down. Anybody hear that A lot. There's so many words and sayings that we became so used to that they ceased to mean anything other than there was just something wrong with us that it wasn't something else. Like what was going on with that kid over there sitting on the other side of the classroom. So think about this. Consider. Consider too, the things in life that can make something come out and become pronounced in you. That for so many years, where I'm going to use that word, masked. I think the whole concept of masking is so fascinating to me because we've been talking about being empathetic and being intuitive, which means being able to see through masks, which means that we recognize there is a mask. And if you've been listening to the last few episodes, I'm saying that a lot of times people I look at are masking. They have masks. They're thinking one thing and saying another. They're telling themselves one thing, but they're actually being another. It can be very confusing, and particularly as a woman growing older. And if you've never been evaluated, it's probably too late. I mean, I can't say it's too late, but you know how it is getting through the American medical system. I mean, God, who wants to. Who wants to do one more thing with that if you don't have to? But maybe menopause has sort of reset something in you. Maybe it's harder to focus. Maybe you can't sit down and read that book for two hours anymore. Maybe you start checking your email, but then you run across an article and before you know it, you're somewhere else. Like on Substack or You know, Patreon or Medium or wherever it is. And then you realize, oh, I was checking my mail, oh my God, I actually logged in to, to deposit a check too and I forgot about that. I better go back and do that. Hormonal changes, life changes, lifestyle changes, the lack of distractions. If you're a parent and your kids are gone and you have time now that that time that used to be completely sucked by your family now is available to you again and your mind just might pop like a starburst in the sky, fireworks and land in all different places while it's trying to figure out where to go and what it should be focusing on. So the late in life phenomena is quite real, whether it's hormones or life circumstances, etc. Or simple simply being overlooked for so many years, simply not falling into the traditional categories. I will tell you this though. In the last three years I have had more students on the spectrum and with ADHD than I have ever seen, ever seen before in my career. And I don't think that's an accident. I think that as people are embracing who they are self diagnosed or other diagnosed and I believe me, I know the whole, the whole discussion about that self diagnosis and so forth, but I really feel that many of these people are realizing that their energy has been roughed around and just torn by the seas of life. And when I start saying you're empathic, you're intuitive, you can manifest that ability to just imagine and see, stop and, and let your mind move from thing to thing like that. You're a natural born manifester. How did you not know that? Or that ability to just sense the room, to read everything, just to know. How did you not know that? How did you not know you were empathic? And they say, well, one, I just didn't know, or two, I thought it was just my ADHD or whatever other neurodiversity that I have, I don't really know where I'm going with this episode, you guys. I'm thinking this through as I'm talking with you, but it's finally come to a point where I've noticed such an increase in these highly intelligent, highly tapped in, highly creative, highly disabled people to shift and shift and shift and shift and shift again. Coming into the world of flow dreaming. And you know, flow itself is, is also about shifting and shifting and shifting again. It's about constantly maneuvering the surfboard on, on the, the wind waves of life. It's flexibility, it's motion. And that too seems to be a hallmark of some of this kind of diversity. So this is perhaps the beginning of my eyes opening to this true overlap. And someday you can all look back on this particular episode and laugh at me like, ha, ha, ha. That's when she finally figured it out. We'll see where all of this goes in the future. But if anything I'm saying is ringing some bells in you, please start looking. Go, go a little deeper. You know, there's a lot of great resources, not on, just on the Internet, the Instagram. There's a lot of great accounts you can follow. So far I haven't found very many that discuss the overlap of ADHD or other forms of neurodiversity like our adhd, autism and ADHD with intuition and manifesting. But maybe I'll start to chime in a few of my own perspectives here, see where that takes us all. The point is, you've got mad skills. You've got mad skills and they may be erupting in you. Where before they were masked, they were hidden, they were pushed down, they were, they were made to fit into societal norms. And you may be at a point recognizing that they don't anymore or it's harder to do that. And I think another reason wrapping up here is that with all the noise in the world right now, all the information hitting us, the overload is so extreme that all of our previous abilities to mask previous abilities to say, I'm just normal. Nothing's nothing to see here, folks. We can't do it anymore. We just can't do it anymore. Too much social media coming into our brains. Too many emails coming into our inbox, too many demands and requests, too many different places to check whether it's messenger or threads or what do they call, you know, Twitter X or Instagram or too many places. Do your friends reach out to you on at least six different platforms? How long does it take for you to respond to them now? There was a day when you had the telephone, the mail, you showed up at the door. 3. It was like 12, 15, 16. Depends on how many communities you're in. I mean, I haven't talked about Slack or Discord or oh my God. So you can see how the prior ability to keep the lid on has been or is being kind of shattered by the excess. If you're feeling that, if you're feeling discontent, irritable, confused, lost, stuck, frozen in the headlights. Hello. Come, come hang out with me. Come hang, hang out with our, our little group here. And this sounds like it's my coming out show, doesn't it? That's what I say it to be. To be honest, I have not been formally declared or diagnosed. However, multiple members of my family are. And like I say, the apples don't fall far from the tree. So I'm going to run with this idea that perhaps there's a bit of this in me or a whole lot of it. I don't know. And I just want you to know, if so, or if not, I've somehow done very well finding the gems of this. And as a teacher of manifesting, as a teacher of empathic intuition, I want to reassure you that you can find the gems of it too, and completely knock it off the books. I mean, excel beyond what you could ever imagine. Yeah, I'm going to leave it at that. That's a. That's a really good message. And if you're not, by the way, anywhere on this neurodiverse spectrum, I'm so sorry. You're still good. You're still good. You're still a good person. I'm kidding. Yes. Do you not know my sarcasm right now? But if you're feeling envious or jealous, I want to be ADHD now. Oh, come on. We'll welcome you in. Just come on in. Big hugs. All right. Funny, strange little episode, but that's what you get sometimes. By the way, my program, born Empath, if it hasn't started, it will be starting very soon. I'm not sure when I'm going to run this. Can you start late? No, probably not. There might be a tiny little window, I haven't decided yet. But this is a big hunky program. This is two 11 week sections.
