A brand's biggest risk isn't being disliked, it's being invisible. Safe, bland messaging designed to offend no one ends up speaking to no one. Stating who you're not for filters out wrong-fit customers and lets the right ones find you.

Most businesses ensconce themselves around a centralised, inoffensive, yet ultimately bland messaging position. So few are willing to step outside their self-inflicted restriction. Many businesses are happy to define the audience they're looking to target, but they're uncomfortable doing the opposite. They're unwilling to send out messaging or signalling that potentially alienates them from audiences they're not looking to target. A message, say, suggesting we're not for you doesn't have to be presented as offensive, polarizing, or antagonistic. By being honest and upfront, you're not only pre-qualifying the buyers that contact you, you're helping the customer make a more informed purchase decision.
