In most businesses, especially in B2B, perhaps only 5% of people you initially contact are ready to buy your product at that particular moment. As many as 95% are what's known as "out of market." That's marketing speak for "they're not ready to buy right now." They may be interested in a month, 6 months, or even longer, but as of right now, they're not going to feature in anyone's sales forecast. Yet these are exactly the people to target with your marketing. Most brand awareness marketing is done for currently out-of-market buyers, so your brand comes to mind when they are in the buying selection phase. Because if you don't come to mind when they are ready to buy, then you may as well not exist. Sure, the 5% that are ready to buy today are important, but it's the 95% who will buy tomorrow who will determine the longer-term success, or otherwise, of your business.
